Thanks !! Excellent video, we had a 2858 , 94 and just moved up to a 3388 1996, going from a stern drive to rudders and the system has been a learning curve. This helped a lot !!

Nice to hear you enjoyed it!
We know several people with 3388s, great boat.
Sure helps having twin engines when manoeuvring, over a the single stern drive and a whole lot less driveline maintenance too.
Thanks for watching and for the comment!

Thank you for posting this. I will need to do this job myself on my Bayliner 3788 very soon.

Thank you for your videos they are super great I love seeing the work you’re doing on the boat as a fellow 4087 owner down in Port Orchard.

Thank Mark I did not know about the purge screws thank you

Hi Anthony. I have to say I didn't know about this either. It is a great idea in that once these purge screws (I like the term bypass better in that is bypasses the actuator) are open you need only to keep the reservoir topped off and pressured and simply turn the steering wheel for a prolonged period slowly in each direction. This just causes the air to accumulate in the reservoir without reaching into an awkward area or making a mess catching fluid from the bleeder valves.
Thanks for the comment and for watching our channel!!

Thanks for these videos. Your presentation is steadily improving. The location videos are great but don’t hold back on technical - repair and general maintenance videos.

Thanks!! We all have learned a lot about making videos over the past year... There will likely be more technical videos on the way. The idea has been to video document the overall experience of boating operation and ownership. The trouble is, everything takes 3 times longer when you make a video of it; but that's part of the fun of it.
Anyway, more to come... Thank you for the comments and watching the channel!!

Always good to lubricate the new seal before the shaft goes in.

Yeah, that bit didn't make the edit but yes; you are correct. It should be lubed during the assembly.

Good video, do the pistons have to go back in any particular order. After resealing mine I am unable to get any traction on the starboard turn. Currently stuck on full lock to port.

      @MVMakenaKai  Před rokem

      Hi There.
It was a while ago when I took this apart but I'm pretty sure the pistons are all identical, no special order.
This is the only time I had this apart but the three things that could maybe cause the issue you describe:
      1. If the housing didn't go back together exactly as it came apart (just a guess, not sure if condition could result from that).
      2. If the hydraulic line(s) didn't go on the correct locations on the back of the helm pump.
      3. If when pumping the air from the system, the starboard side has significant air remaining in the lines. Were you able to open both (2) bypass valves on the bottom of the reservoir before cycling pump?
These suggestions are just a guess, hopefully you get it working soon.
      Good luck.

I wish you would have had a better description or visual of the seals. It would be nice to describe the orientation of the seals. My H50 2 part seal does not fit together. It looks like yours is a component set. It was a useful video though.

      Hi Charles
Yeah, my filming “how-to” videos certainly can use some practice. Maybe I’ll get another chance when service the lower helm.
The seals were separate in the kit but I put the thinner seal in first and then the thicker lip seal. The lip seal has a fairly obvious direction same as it would be in any application (spring side facing inwards).
Thank you for your feedback and watching the video. Hopefully there is enough bread crumbs to help you out with your project…

Sorry I saw in the video title that it is a SeaStar.

Yeah it is Seastar, our boat is a 1995.

Does it work? How did the steering feel afterwards? Looks like the pump body had a fair amount of crap on it when it went back in...
I have to disassemble and clean my H21 due to copper flakes contaminating the system....

    • @MVMakenaKai
      @MVMakenaKai  Před 2 lety

I'm not sure about the "pump body had a fair amount of crap on it" that you observed.
I felt it was a clean reassembly of the pump.
In any case, the steering is working great and has been working great for the past four months since replacing the seals.
Hope your project goes okay, cheers!!

@@MVMakenaKai I think I posted that comment on the wrong video, my apologies! However, I do have a question you or some of your viewers might be able to answer: After re-building my helm and re-installing I cannot get it to bleed the system. The helm does not seem to pump much if at all. The auto pilot will move the steering ram, but the helm will not. I am planning to rip it back out this weekend, and see if I damaged any of the new seals, etc. but I am scratching my head over this one. Before the rebuild, it would only steer in one direction. I also installed a new steering ram seal kit. All line connections are tight and aren't leaking. Before I give up and order a new helm, any suggestions?
