- If you're looking for some straight-up advice on getting a better hold on your AR-15, this Quick Tip is for you! There's a bewildering array of handguard-mounted vertical grips and hand stops on the market today. Fortunately, Brownells Gun Tech™ Caleb has a firm grasp on the topic and is here to help! A simple, Old School clamp-on foregrip, like the Knight's Armament vertical grip, is meant to be grasped by your entire support hand. A variation on the full-length vertical grip is the massive Grip Pod, which has quick-deploy BIPOD legs inside. Magpul and Bravo Company offer short vertical grips that have become extremely popular. They are less bulky, and because most folks use a vertical grip more like a hand stop, not wrapping your full hand around the grip isn't a handicap. A short vertical grip provides another practical benefit, which Caleb explains for us. A HANDSTOP helps you grasp the handguard and pull the rifle back into your shoulder for a secure hold. Magpul offers two hand stops, the very low-profile XTM and the larger Vertical Fore Grip. The VFG really combines the functions of a hand stop with a short vertical grip. A BARRICADE STOP, like the Noveske K9, lets you steady the rifle by bracing the forend against a wall, fence, or similar structure.
So how do these devices work in real life? Caleb's got a coupla AR-15s, and he demos several of these products for us. (He tends to like a vertical foregrip on a shorter handguard and a hand stop on a longer 'guard.) Bottom line: the "best" vertical grip or hand stop is the one the feels best to you. - Sport
Went on an adventure of foregrips, I've tried them all. VFGs, AFGs, Handstops. found I liked them all just fine, but now I'm running none at all as I find it easier to carry around my rifle without a giant obstruction on the end and allows me to shit around my grip easier. So now I'm running plain Magpul mlok rail covers
The best grip of all? Its the one you like. 100%
Bingo. For me it’s none at all.
I use an Angled Fore Grip on mine. I have large hands so it fits my hand very well. I wrap my index finger around the front of it to bring the rifle back into my shoulder real nice.
I live in NYS & just looking at this dangerous item has me running to my 'safe space' ;)
If only this video was available 1month earlier. It would save me so much time.
Feel free to call or email if you have any questions like that! I get a ton of questions like this on my personal social media and enjoy helping!
BCM KAG is my go-to for just about everything. It's nice to have just that little bit of angle while lower profile on the handguard.
For me it’s the BCM vert grip. I also like how it’s slightly angled
Always great content thanks brownells 🙏
As usual a nice presentation. I appreciate the fact that you present what is out there not assuming everyone already knows. Thanks.
I remember buying the original Magpul AFG in 2010. It made handling my M4 a lot better than fighting with the GripPod that was issued with it. Slowly working towards cloning that rifle, priority is on finishing the Mk.12 Mod.0 though.
Ooooh, I like the light inside the gun safe...the AT-4 looks like a movie star!
The AFG always fits me best. All my AR platform guns use that.
Many people load-out to what they were trained. I learned on the magwell hold, despite using a full-length M-16. It gave one hell of a barrel swing, but it's what I know. I picked up a vertical magwell grip from MFT, I think it was. It lets me keep the familiar grip point I know and keeps me from accidentally torqueing a magazine out of alignment. It also has a pair of recesses for remote switches. This has the added benefit of leaving plenty of room for my Harris bipod without hanging it out past the muzzle.
I have been thinking about adding this , thanks
"Some people love 'em, some people hate 'em..." Pretty clear where you fall in that, but man, I love the foregrip/bipod combo on my SCAR! Definitely prefer something shorter on my ARs though.
Magpul VFG or Emmisary hand brake all day for me. They position my hand in a more natural and comfortable position with an aggressive grip and provide more surface area to pull back against to counter muzzle rise.
Awesome video! Very informative and nice walkthrough of the options and the why’s?
BCM vertical grip is my go to
I didn’t like it at 1st, but I’m a fan of that vertical & hand stop grip on that 13.7
You get perfect hand placement and using the C grip/clamp allows you to control the barrel, which helps get your sights back on target faster after each shot. I understand that style of grip/clamp isn’t for everyone and I’m not sure if your thumb would get in the way of the LPVO, but I really do like that set up!
Good video Caleb
I use the BCM KAG and vertical grip mostly, but it really depends on how far out my off-hand has to go to keep the rifle stable and what angle my wrist ends up.
I use a Magpul AFG on my AR and it's comfortable for me. I tried VFG's and they work too but I prefer the AFG.
Magpul RVG is the truth. Have it on 2 rifles.
Also have an all aluminum vertical grip from Eagle Lite. They don't sell it anymore. Fantastic one.
Good info. I need to try out handstops. Looks like it might be more comfortable.
Magpul AFG is my fave. C clamp is pretty nice. I should mention in this edit that I used the AFG to also brace against some cover, doesn't have any teeth but it's pretty effective. Next purchase is a rail cover to give my thumb a bit of a break from the pic rail on top of my handguard.
Put one on my 12.5” SBR, it’s perfect for that c-clamp
I like my fab defense angled mlok with thier rubberized handstop on left side to hook my thumb into. Run it on my brigade bm9 with rubber mlok inserts cut to different sizes jammed in free spots for little extra texture. Had to cut the inserting part to fit the wierd u-lok bm9 has but it's rubber so ez peezy.
Absolutely love the Grey Ghost look...
Great video
The grip pod was handy for standing post in a fixed position. Aside from that I really didn't care for it.
Awesome videos
I used to use the LT F.U.G. but the went to the Tango Down QD grip...but honestly I just use the magwell now.
CALEB. I'M PICKLE RICK. Where are my roach parts? I approve this message
Thanks. Got the AFG2 from Magpul, very nice!
I have large hands and the magpul works nicely for me.
I use a Magpul M-LOK angled fore-grip; but I mounted it on the right side (3:00), so I'm gripping it with my fingers. That fits my hand the best, with the handguard resting flat on my palm, and my wrist straighter with my arm. My thumb is pointed forward at 9:00, so I'm squeezing the sides of the handguard with my thumb and fingers; getting a nice, firm grip.
I run a simple Magpul AFG on my Sig 516 and it makes it so much more comfortable than without it.
I got a UTG pistol grip style vertical grip on my 20" AR and besides being comfortable its big enough that I no longer play hot potato after firing a mag or two of ammo given how hot my hand guards tended to get.
I'm glad he didn't mention those weird ryker weed-eater grips that hang off the side lol
I am not sure if it’s possible. But can you show us how to install the vertical forward grip some of us are new to the AR platform and I don’t want to disconnect or takeoff anything I don’t need to takeoff to an install something relatively easy from my understanding. Thank you very much, great video
For a much deeper understanding of the AR15, I recommend this series www.brownells.com/the-trigger-times/how-to/how-to-build-an-ar-15/
My wife's IWI X95 has proven to be a unique contender when shopping for foregrips.
In case you are unaware, the stock handguards are removeable on the X95 which leaves you with a picatinny rail underneath. Although the included pic rails are rather short which has made for some interesting options.
Currently we are experimenting with the Magpul RVG but I also have two versions of angled foregrips on the way as well. Both the Magpul AFG and AFG-2.
However, like most women, she does not like the feel of a picatinny rail on her support hand. So I imagine this will be a long-term process of trial and error.
But at least she is having fun in the meantime!
Stay classy my friend.
Thank you for your service, Brother HOOAH!
Screw the military industrial complex and you are an idiot.
@@TheDoomWizard Show some Godd@mn Respect you @$$hole !!!
Rail covers also work well with a hand stop, magpul is like a 1.30 each or you can just print them
BIO-MECHANICS! gotta have that modern support hand grip
Which would be not tryna be a smartass or troll I just want to know the answer
Thank you for your service. Nice, ranger bands, can, pec 9 ??
I have the KAC knockoff broomstick on my SBR. Perfect grip for $15 vs $63.
I almost got the KAC bc my SBR has a KAC rail. Glad I didn’t.
What are the rubber pieces you have on the barrel for grip and heat protection called? Good channel, BTW. I prefer the angled foregrip...
I have the Grip-Pod on my patrol rifle, but I'd like to find one about 1/3 shorter.
I picked up a dozen of those knights grips in 2014 at a mil surplus store for 2.00 ea.
What a Steal
AFG is most comfortable. The magpul vertical grip is nice but doesn't do as well on an AK, hinders the mag rotation slightly. ARs don't have that problem luckily. AFG does what the shorter vertical grip does but does so better.
I like the BCM short one. But I’m so used to my Romanian Dong grip on my WASR, I turned it around so that the angle is forward cause it feels more natural to me
Depends. I prefer angled foregrips, especially on guns with shorter hand guards. Like my ZPAP 92 or my AR with the M4 quad picatinny hand guard. But I do have a gun with a vertical grip. I have a gun with a hand stop. I have a gun with both.
Will there be more barrel lengths for the BRN-180? I’d love to buy an upper, but due to my shoulder disability, the added weight of a 16 inch barrel and handguard is a little much to handle anymore. I think a 13.7 BRN180 pin and weld would sell pretty well, as it’s been the new “hotness” for a couple years now.
Fudds use the angled
Remember to consider the legal ramifications of adding foregrips to AR pistols, which have barrels shorter than 16". Caleb's 13.7" gun here is a short barreled rifle (SBR) with a rifle stock, so it's legal for him to add a vertical foregrip.
Repeal the NFA and abolish the ATF.
Or the suppressor mount is pinned/welded to 16in.
Consider the legal ramifications and practice civil disobedience to silly, unjust laws.
I really think holding it fully by the hand is better than at some awkward angle
Awesome quick tip! Which Dust Cover is in your rifle?
I just use an Arisaka Finger Stop between my index and middle finger.
I noticed that some people cant their short handguard forward and some cant theirs backward like you have it. Is their a reason to cant it forward vs backward as backward seems like it would fit your hand more naturally? Also why did people stop using that bracing tool seems for competitive shooting being able to solidly brace against a surface would provide more accuracy
Ok, ready for a spin-off vid? Application of these to different rifles (DMR, carbine, assault rifle, battle rifle, etc.)
Including barricade stop pls!!
What is Caleb's handguard on that first rifle? Looks beautiful
I think it's great that Ed Warren's son loves guns.
Reversed Bcm angled/vertical grip all the way
What brand gun stand are those. I like em.
Interesting.
I sometimes walk around the house with just the grip pod going *shunk, reset, shunk, reset*
I just bought the Magpul M-LOK MVG MOE Vertical Grip Polymer yesterday. I bought it for the full grip as being a newbie, I struggled to determine which one to get. I shattered my left wrist so using a C-grip kind of hurts. I can do it, but not for long, so can I use the MVG to go back and force from a C-grip to a full grip on the vertical grip, or should I buy the KAC Forward Pistol Grip? Thanks
What was the military doctrine for given you a vg on the m4 did it increases hits?
you have any suggestions for the first foregrip that can be mounted on mlock?
Magpul MVG is my favorite. I run it on my suppresses 9” 300 blackout SBR. Love MLOK, it’s vastly superior to keymod in durability and is far lighter than the classic quad Pic rails. Also I run Magpul furniture on my gun because I think Magpul not only looks the best, but I think it has incredible functionality for the weight.
Where can I find the stand you are using for these rifles? That attached to the magwell....
What hand stop was on his rifle in front of the angled grip? Never seen that before.
I had that old school vertical grip when I deployed. Funny thing is, some officers wanted to see if I had attached it to a 240-B, could I shoot standing up. Was able to but I had the size and strength to do so! What bi-pods would you recommend? I want one that folds back pointing towards me versus forward due to my hand moving from the hand guard to stand them up and right back to my hand guard. But it seems the ones that fold back are weak when you are ready to shoot in the prone.
Got fold-back bipods, just get yourself an old-school Galil!
I have a Caleb and Steve question:
Are other pistols that feature a mechanical-external safety safe to carry ‘cocked and locked’ like the 1911? For example HK 45 DA/SA, Sig 220 SAO etc.
Yes, I personally would not carry a DA/SA that way simply because of personal preference but firearms like the HK45 and certainly the SAO Sigs are safe to carry in such a manner.
What rail covers do you have on the side of the vertical grip on your rifle? thanks!
What are the rail scales you have on those handguards?
what stock is on the AR closest to you? i like that one
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO He shouldered the brace 😲
When are you going to pull that AT-4 out for show & tell?
I know it’s “old school” and heavy, but I like the Troy Modular grip. I can go short or long. I can also store items. And, it’s built like a tank! I don’t have to worry about it at all…
Troy hates you, and they can suck it.
Deemed restricted on the vertical grips in NY State
What Suppressor are you running on the first rifle Caleb?
A friend of mine just bought something with what he calls "U lock" on it, does that mean Universal, will it work with Maglock and Keymod??? ;-)
Best VFG for a pistol build?
I didn't realize you all have over 300 thousand subscribers. How awesome. Love Caleb. I'd dip my toes in the fruit loop pond just to be able to run my hands through his marvelous hair LOL , anyways love the channel. Keep it up!
Looking for steel FAL magazines, anyone know where I’ll find them?
What type/brand of rifle is that in the front?
Where can I get those rifle rests?
I use the BCM one a lot. I put it on backwards though, so that the angle is pushing forward. It makes it so that my hand locks in like it's being hooked on to, regardless of how slippery or dirty my hands are. Allows for even more stability when dodging bullets. Idk about anyone else, but getting shot at makes my hands involuntarily shake. Being able to crank down on my grip helps solve that problem.
Personally I own a magpul vertical grip and is fine. But the Bravo is cooler
AR-10 with a BCM angled forward.
Jeeze one whole episode of his alien fingers! I'm in heaven.
have a question that might worth a video :
I'm a new AR-15 owner and despite getting a Windham Weaponry, the trigger is pretty awful, grainy and heavy. Is it a going to break-in and get smoother as I shoot with it ? Or should I upgrade it ?
It will smooth out some but if its really bad it wont fix it. Best to just upgrade. ALG has a decent basic upgrade. Basically a smoothed out mil-spec trigger for around $60, then there is the Larue MBT for around $100. Then the high end Geissele triggers for $240. And stay away from cassette stule drop-in triggers. They have reliability issues and are more trouble than they are worth. Besides changing the regular two pin style triggers isnt that difficult
Where can I order the grip pod for my AR?
Can anyone explain the magpul moe vs mlok
i was disappointed not seeing the Hera Arms CQR forend grip....
I perfer to run my carbine without a foregrip.
If you are new to shooting, you must get the bi-pod vertical grip.
I like the BCM vertical grip flip around. I like to think it's the little AR version of the "dong" on a AK.
Totally off topic what color gray are you using on those beauties
Wolf Gray
Which rifle was that with the folding buttstock?
Brownells BRN180
But can I use one as a forward assist?
With a little sprinkle of creative gunsmithing, anything is possible.
