TØP TUESDAY: RUBY EXPLAINED

  • "Ruby" is one of the sweetest, deepest Twenty One Pilots songs of all time. The lyrics will truly make you feel something.
    In this song, Tyler Joseph tells the story of a young girl that he and Joshua Dun know from their church. "Ruby" has Down Syndrome, but that doesn't keep her from being the sweetest, most joyful "angel" she can be. Tyler and Josh love her, and so they wrote this song about her. Enjoy my explanations of the meaning of the lyrics of "Ruby" by Twenty One Pilots.

      I just wanted to say this, but no offense if you liked this song, but I didn't. I thought the lyrics hardly made sense (and I'm half-Christian) and the music was *so* annoying. The buzzy, frenetic synthesizer always sticks in my head and drives me crazy! And also, why is Tyler Joseph so obsessed with this little girl? He sings about her like he's a stalker and wants to rape her, because she's so beautiful and amazing, even though we as the audience can't even see her.
      Also, f*** Tyler's screaming like a maniac. Really? *"YOU'RE AN ANGEEEEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLGAXNGNAPZLGIKELMNGIWIOLGKO!!!!!!!!"* Stop screaming, you creeper!

    About the room being red, I agree with your explanation and besides the methaphorical meaning, I've always connected it to the literal meaning of Ruby: the colour of the stone.
    Also, I think it may mean that she owns the room she walks in, with her arrival it turns to red. Her uniqueness makes her stand out anywhere.
    Loving your interpretations, I'd love to see The Judge next!

    ruby makes me cry bc it reminds me of who would've been my sister, but there was a miscarriage and she was never born. screaming "tell our dad i'm sorry, you're an angel" is so cathartic because it gives me peace to think that she's in heaven. anyway that's how i interpret the song, i think it's a really cool example of how their music can mean something totally different to the listener but still be incredibly powerful.

    I'm so glad we're on the same page in regards to the verse where he talks about the red paint! I always thought I was being weird because people said it was just a reference to her name.
    Tell me where are you from/shada-dee-da-dum
    Tell me where am I from/shada-dee-da-dum
    I think this highlights the contrast between the seriousness of his questions and the innocence of her answers. Our introspective nature leads us to have big questions, Tyler's being about faith generally. Now listen don't get me wrong on this: I sense him being almost envious of her "unawareness". Is our reflectiveness a blessing? Or is it a curse for our sin?
    Let me know what you think

    The down syndrome keeps her innocent, her being a little more simple of mind makes it easier for her to maintain her innocence. While Tyler, or us, are conflicted with doing what is right and wrong cause we're plagued imperfection constantly sinning everyday. Maybe she's an inspiration because even with her disability shes maintains her innocence, while Tyler being of full sound and mind still struggles. Seeing her innocence as perfection the only way to describe her is as an angel here on earth.

    I think the shade to red means that she is beautiful. As if that, they painted the room pink, but because she is special, her room has turned to red. The color of a ruby is red. He's talking about how when she was born everyone thought she would be normal, but she is not. She is special. She is beautiful. She is rare. She is a ruby.

    Thank you so much!🙂 I'm so glad we have basically the same ideas about this one. To me, the color of the room symbolises the intensity of Ruby. She is "disabled" in this world, but she is so special and has that something everyone is looking for..(i like to think of her eyes having the same sparkle as the ruby slippers from The Wizard of Oz:D) But seriously, i don't "know her", but feel like i do. Thanks for the video. :)

    • @ThePopSongProfessor
      @ThePopSongProfessor  Před 7 lety +1

      Yeah, I think that's a good way of putting it too. Her personality is so intensely beautiful that red symbolizes her and her name best.

  • @moon20msp40
    @moon20msp40 Před 6 lety

    I used to think that Ruby was about a girl that harms herself because the lyrics "Your mama painted your room a shade of pink she said, but with your great arival that shade has turned to red" and red is the color of blood and one of her ways she might harm would be cutting. The lyrics "Youre an angel fallen down" a fallen angel she might self-harm but she still might be a good person. In the lyrics "In your homeland they call you queen" that may mean that others(Her friends)who may do the same thing as her. She may also do that because the song says "tell our dad im sorry" the reson i thoght that was because he let her do that and God is mad that he let her (he is the key word to Tyler). I know its kinda dumb but i was 11 when i gained intrest in TØP so yeah...

    I think the "But with your great arrival that shade has turned to red" is simply making a connection to her name because rubies are generally red in color, so her arrival is making an impact on the room and/or her entire house/family. Just a thought!

    As a newer fan it kind of sucks having to make these comments so late but in any case these are my thoughts. I feel like Ruby's room turning from a shade of pink to red is suggesting that when Ruby was born she wasn't just a diluted pink "average" little girl like her mother thought she would be. Ruby was born to be way more, a vibrant shade of red, a whole and primary color. Red can symbolize passion I think, maybe Ruby is the kind of little girl that is very passionate about life & about things that she loves and holds dear to her. This passion and purity inspired Tyler. The part where Tyler sings "your eyes say, sha da dee da dum" I think has more meaning to it. It is said that when you look into someones eyes you can peer into their soul. Maybe this part means that her soul is full of song, her soul sings out about heaven. In any case, there is no way to really be 100% sure but those are my additional thoughts on the topic. :)
