  • In this episode I start the reassembly process with the cylinder head. Valve lapping and cam installation.
I ended up removing the inlet cam and valves as well and lapped all four valves, paying particular attention to the new exhaust cam. I began with coarse lapping paste and a drill, spinning the valve in the seat and pressing from the top to grind the faces. I finished each off with the lapping stick and the finer paste.
The valves on the 450 are installed with a torsion bar system rather than valve springs. After the keepers and collets are placed on top if the valve stems you then install the torsion bars, applying tension with a wrench before installing onto the locating dowel on the cylinder head.
Both cams have timing marks which are important for the installation of the cam chain and timing of the engine. I marked these with a sharpie for easy reference when timing the engine. Both of these are located on the right hand side of the bike.
Next time, cam chain and engine timing,
    Thanks for watching!

You say in video timing mark is on left hand side of cam but you show right hand side which is correct.

Thank you so much for the great series. I bought a new 1972 CB450-K when I got out of the Marines Corps that year. It was a great bike.
