- Young Israeli husband Eli Cohen is recruited by the Mossad in the early 1960's and sent to Syria. Telling his wife he has a new job that requires extensive business travel, he takes up residence in Syria, where he befriends a high-ranking Syrian government official and provides invaluable information to Israel. On a visit home, his wife pleads with him to leave his job so he can be home more, and his handler tells him he has accomplished enough, but he decides to return to Syria one last time. One day he learns of an attack on a kibbutz scheduled for that night; he abandons normal precautions in order to warn Israel as quickly as possible, and is caught.

There are no Countries where Governments takes responsibilities of their Spies who Sacrifice their lives and their families Sacrificing for their own Countries and what their Nation gives them back it's only ignorance and pretending not knowing anyone. However, this is one of the Heart Touching story I have ever watched and I would like to thank script writer, producer, director and who has been related to make this film .

I went on a coach outing and most probably saw all the places Eli Cohen was reporting back about. Many places that were missing from the film. One of my most enlightening days in the North of Israel and the Golan.
I went into Syrian military installations and walked in the same rooms overlooking the valley. The building is now just a concrete shell with doors and windows blown out.
I also saw the comemerration to his late wife and children. His wife never remarried. I really recommend getting a guide to see the "Eli Cohen Trail". The tour went all over the Golan.
Fabulous movie. What I like most is that nobody nor any race was demonised; they were shown as human with decency in them.

Sacha Baron Cohen also did a fantastic job playing Eli Cohen in the 6 part mini series... "The Spy".
What blows my mind is how similar both John Shea and Sacha Baron Cohnen sound even though their performances were separated by decades.

A sad, but good movie and very good acting. Eliyahu Ben-Shaul Cohen was an Egyptian-born Israeli spy. He is best known for his espionage work in 1961 to 1965 in Syria, where he developed close relationships with the Syrian political and military hierarchy.
So he developed friendships in order to betray them. No honor among spies?

Haled's speech moved me too. It will never stop until we learn with the heart that violence begets violence and hatred begets hatred. Somewhere else (Midnight's Children I think) I quoted Gandhi's words when a Hindu came crying to him that a Muslim had killed his son. Gandhi said to the Hindu something like: "You take a Muslim child who has lost his parents and you raise him as your own, as a Muslim." It is of such profound love and wisdom that these words are in my heart too and I truly believe that that is what we, the human race, are here to learn, however many aeons it takes us. The sons of Abraham, Ishmael who was not the promised son and Issac of whom the promises of YHWH would be to bless all of the Nations .
Yet , Ishmael was given a promise to be a great nation but that wherever they went , they would be at war with everyone.
His mother was the 1 st women to receive a blessing from YHWH .
Issac & Ishmael buried their father Abraham.
Ishmael would be the servant of Issac .
Are not the promises of YWHW true to this day ?
Yeshua has brought salvation to man by his death & resurrection and just as he left to heaven , He will return one day.
On that day the Hebrews will weep mightily because then they will know that he is the I AM .

John Shea as Eli Cohen is such a natural, fine actor, that it is impossible for me to beleve he's acting--rather, he is reliving what he feels through the worlds, or wishes he could.

Sad ending. It was a shame he did not listen to his supervisor and quit when he was winning.
His handler may not have wished Eli Cohen to go back but that wasn't a sentiment shared by his seniors & that of the Israeli government. Eli Cohen was too successful & that meant he was never going to be relinquished of his duty. To have an inside man at the highest echelons of Syrian power is truly incredible but was never going to end happily for Eli Cohen. An incredibly brave man & an hero of Israel few will ever match.
Why shame? he saved many lives with that decision
@@daniels4681 ‘Shame’, because he did not switch off and quit when his supervisor suggested he do so. That way he would have done a great job and just avoided the ‘lion’s teeth’. Perhaps later on he could have been assigned to some other role just as vital to the Israelies!
I have read this book about him wen i was around 18 years old in the Dutch language. Very nice to see now a movie about it

It still is a good flick ! It got me interested in spycraft my whole life. Eli Wallach evn play a gangsta in Godfather. It made me read evry single Tom Clancy novel.
I studied a lot about the Mossad and about the state of Israel. I appreciate their consorted efforts and struggles to be one of the best Nations in the whole world. Namaste/ Salom.

As a Catholic, I will always believe that peace in the world will only come through Jesus Christ Our Lord, God and Saviour.

He knew the price paid to insure absolute infiltration was to high to quit. With his dying , it would end and also it meant having the ultimate faith that God was waiting upon his reawakening. Ironically, his funding may have played a part in the purchase of the equipment that led to his capture. Well made movie showing how historically committed Syria is to destroying Israel .

Eli Walach was a great actor. I would watch any movie if he is in it.
As this movie, it is as close to real story as it can be. Cohen played an important role in 1967 war. The victory was nothing short of a miracle. The time of Israeli-arab wars is over. Peace with Egypt and Jordan has been stable though no love is lost between the countries. Relationships with Saudi Arabia is improving. Syria isnt a country any more and will not be a threat to Israel for years to come. Israel is energy independent and supplies gas to its neighbors and Europe. IDF is the strongest army in the region by far. Arabs are looking for economic, technological and military cooperation with Israel. Israel is the only developed country which doesn't have demographic problem. It has the highest birthrate among those countries. Hamas and Hesbollah are just irritation. They are no threat to Israel's existence. Future is bright for Israel.
