  • The Mari Lwyd came to the 12th Night of Christmas celebrations in Llandinam in Mid Wales on Saturday 4 January 2020.
The Mari Lwyd is a Welsh tradition to celebrate New Year and takes place over a period from Christmas to late January. It is a form of wassail in which the participants accompany a person (not a real horse!) disguised as a horse, from house to house, including pubs. They sing at each door to gain admittance and hopefully be rewarded with food and drink. Eventually after a singing contest of sorts the Mari Lwyd is usually admitted as it brings good luck to the household.
The Mari Lwyd was once widespread throughout Wales, but is more common in south east Wales including Glamorgan and Gwent. The tradition faded during the first half of the 20th century and had almost become extinct by the time of World War II but nowadays is experiencing a revival.
The 12th Night celebrations in Llandinam were split between St Llonio's Church and the Llandinam Village Hall. The event was organised by TASC (Traditional Arts in the Community), a charity which promotes and encourages traditional and tradition-based work in Powys and beyond.

The song at the beginning of the video is a version of a traditional folk song called Poor Old Horse. Later in the video (13.40 onwards) Rees and Pete sing a traditional Mari Lwyd song from South Wales. Thanks for watching!
