Rafael is the best example that "sports" karate also works in "real" fights
Disagree sport karate does not exist. Karate is an art style for real combat. The great thing is that Rafael knows how to use it and to adapt to different environments.

The problem that sport karate is half karate ,not the full potential of karate , also rafael is using karate stance which is good for controlling distance in the fight ❤️

Rafael is clearly the OG of Karate Combat, no doubt. He would fit greatly in MMA as well, since he is not only about striking, but clearly he has solid wrestling and Ground and pound skill. I don't see it happening because of his age, but he absolutely could if he wanted.
I agree. Sadly its too late but I do enjoy thinking about what he'll do in the octagon. Would've been a fun fighter to watch
Mmm, only if he knows grappling, but the take down level on MMA is way higher
He’s the king of this rule set. He rushes in with an overhand then clinches. If he gets a takedown he swings wildly on the arms because that’s all the downed opponent can do. BJJ would be this guy’s absolute nightmare and he would get slaughtered in the ufc

I'm a first degree Bushido Shotokan Karate Black belt. I was presented with my black belt 2 months before my 13th birthday (in 2003!).
I trained religiously from the age of 5 to 18 and won medals in regional championships in Kumite and Kata in the south east of England when I was 11 & 12 years old (I'm 31 now). But I haven't stepped foot in a dojo in over 13 years.
I only discovered this championship recently, completely by accident.. but I'm so glad I did. My Gi no longer fits me.. but my belt is more forgiving!
The motivation I feel from these amazing fights is truly grounding and humbling.
I know when I step back into this life I will have to leave my pride at the door and at this point, pretty much start from scratch after all these years (in terms of re-learning the katas etc... And building up my overall fitness and cardio..
But I'm extremely excited to do so.
Here's to the next chapter.

If you are more into the kumite side of things as is shown in Karate Combat then their isn't really a need to relearn the Kata. U can get back to ur previous sparring level quicker by just focusing solely on sparring.

Rafael can do well in MMA but he's too old for it now but he's one of those exceptions. Freak athlete. Nearing 40 and still able to match the exolosiveness and the years of experience. He's still tough and fast. He can take solid hits. His takedown are the best I've seen
