  • Living St. Louis producer Anne-Marie Berger looks at the history of Union Station. At its peak during World War II, Union Station was a central transportation hub for the country. Over 2 million soldiers traveled through the station monthly. Today, it is a tourist attraction and an area of commerce.

Thankfully the people of St. Louis had the foresight to preserve much of this wonderful station complex for future generations to admire and enjoy.

I visited this great station in the mid-1950s to mid-1960s. I was a busy place then. Wonderful meals at the Fred Harvey restaurant. What a tragedy it is to see it today.

Modern American culture is about the suburbs and more space. In my experience, awesome train stations are now found outside of America

Who would have ever thought that a train station would have to make way for a highway.
