To me Mallory and Sandy were the 1st to reach the highest peaks of Mt. Everest and nobody will ever rob them of such achievement. ❤
You could say this if there was proof but there isn’t and likely never will be. So making that statement is quite a stretch.
@TheStinkysteve There's nothing to prove they didn't, particularly as the axe was found on the descent route and not the ascent route.
Additionally, it's well known in the mountain community that Panthong discovered Irvines body and removed the camera - his body was then disposed of thereafter by the Chinese in order to protect their "first to summit the North Face" claim.
@@lf67hh28 there’s also zero proof to what you’re saying. Opinions are like assholes, everybody has one. So yeah I’ll just leave it at that.
@TheStinkysteve Except the location of the ice axe, which isn't up for debate. Plus Panthongs statement is published.
There's certainly more evidence to my theory than yours.
Being objective, you have to concede that.
Mallory was a proper English Dare devil Explorer, movie star looks, a little eccentric arrogance and leaving the biggest mystery...... Bravo sir x
He might as well have reached the summit. Nevertheless even what can be documented to this day shows, what an incredible achievement he made back in the day.
So we should honor his attempt as something truly outstanding back in his days whether he actually reached the summit or not.
He gave it his ultimate effort end eventually his life for it. I have a great deal of respect for even trying. RIP.
Don't forget that following his answer, "Because it's there," he was then asked what's the use of climbing Everest? His reply, "It's of no use whatsoever."
For King and country.
For the glory of an Empire which has not initiated its major decline yet.
To be the first.
Depressing.
That’s quoting only a small bit of his response to the question of what use it was to climb Everest. He also added, “If you cannot understand that there is something in man which responds to the challenge of this mountain and goes out to meet it, that the struggle is the struggle of life itself upward and forever upward, then you won't see why we go. What we get from this adventure is just sheer joy. And joy is, after all, the end of life. We do not live to eat and make money. We eat and make money to be able to live. That is what life means and what life is for.”
@@freefall9832 the same screw as many other mountaineers, of many explorers, of men who got into a rather primitive space rocket and traveled to the moon etc. They’re a different breed of human in some ways. I don’t understand them, either, but where one person sees madness, another sees bravery. I love studying Mallory and the early Everest expeditions, but I don’t particularly “get” him. He had three very young children who had to grow up without him, not to mention a loving wife who was absolutely heartbroken. It’s easy to romanticize Mallory, but maybe in the end his obsession with Everest was a type of vanity, a selfish thing. I don’t judge, just observe.
@@kcbarbo78 Mountain climbing is simple vanity nothing more. Mountain climbing is not a achievement like getting to the moon.
When I'm going to bed I turn these on and just listen to stories until I pass out
I'm sure Mallory would be horrified at the filthy tourist trap that Everest has become today.
It is fascinating watching that video of Mallory’s corpse being found. Compared to WW1, climbing Mt. Everest must have felt peaceful and serene…
On the contrary; Mallory said to a friend that climbing everest was "More like war".
I just watched that video, myself. An excellent video. Incredible what they were able to achieve with out all the technology we have today.
This was very well put together. The script, narration, and footage was great. Had me glued to the screen the whole time
George Mallory going up the north face of Everest in 1924...it's like Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on the moon. Hillary and Norgay Mallory and Ervine, men once did great things.
Thank you for honoring his memory. I believe he did reach the summit.
It was interesting to get to hear a bit about his earlier expeditions to Everest, and not just the last one. Personally, I view the summit as a halfway marker, unless you also make it down alive, you haven't really finished the whole climb. So to me, it's irrelevant if they reached the top or not.
@@nunyafuckinbizniz Feel free to continue to think that. By the way, I've also never understood why Scott have been so glorified, compared to Amundsen, whose team actually made it both to the pole, and back, alive. To me, all the glory belongs to Amundsen, he learnt from indigenous people in other areas of the world how to best survive in such an environment, and got both to his summit goal, and home again.
Mallory’s son basically said the same - if you make it to the summit but don’t make it back down alive, you’ve only done half the job. If they did make it to the top - the first human beings ever, and with such primitive gear - it would have been a great accomplishment, but the credit for a successful first summit would still go to Hillary and Tensing Norgay because they actually made it home. With that said, I have immense respect for Mallory and Irvine.
Agreed. Making it to the top is half way. You have to make it down alive to count in my book.
Well told, thank you
Ww1 ended in 1918, not 1920 lol
Most of the info in this video is wrong...
Your illustrations are amazing
Not sure if this was made to purposefully misinform or what, but the amount of information in this video claimed as fact that is verifiably false is baffling. Pretty images of the mountains though
There is an easy explanation as to why they were behind schedule, and it's not the terrain.
It was the weight of their balls
Wonderful narrative and love yiur voice ❤😂
About the only accurate information in this video is that some of the dates are correct. It's a nice random collection of mountain images, though.
They were Men and They lived life as fully as is possible.
Cheers
Ahhh, if you'd just made your video _two seconds_ longer, it'd have been 19:22 in length. _1922,_ see! Ignore me, I've got legit OCD.
Anyway, awesome video, as ever. I love your use of pertinent, period photography. Details-rich and fascinating always.
Thanks for sharing.
Most people die on the way down just like Mallory did.
I think they made it to the top. I hope they find the camera in my lifetime.
Dying isn't making it, not that reaching the summit means anything anyway hahaha
@@stevemorris6790uhh nope. To summit does not mean up and down! The summit is literally just the word for the highest point of the mountain! A successful climb is up and down! The summit is the top! The halfway point of a successful climb.
@@Jen-ep6zy , it’s not how authorities think a summit is completed as up and down if was like that lots of mounntanies would get certified of complete summit ! Google it
The clothes they wore back then were definitely nothing like today's goosedown clothing
I know Mallory was the first. I just know it.
the picture is probably under a rock on the summit
We just don’t know if they made it. I personally don’t believe they did. But their story is truly incredible nevertheless. I hope that one day we can find the truth!
What’s the song in the beginning
First winner melory. Irvin❤
Irvings body has TWO cameras.. he was carrying both at the time.. presumably filled with summit photos. Since they were roped together.. I think his body is buried beneath Mallory.. I hope someone finds him before the cameras are destroyed.
The film manufacturer even gave directions for how to store and seal the cameras should they be found.. to ensure they can process the film.
Noel Odell is a single person.
it is definitely very likely that the chinese hide information which makes it even more likely that he summited. i think he definitely did.
liked video at first, then got curious what kind of a dope would quote altitudes in meters while the map reads in feet, then i see mostly negative comments about the accuracy of this piece. i guess its the inaccurate kind.
How much research went into this?😂
First win claimbar malorey irvin
George Finch.
"Especially British mountaineers?" Only the British had ever been there.
I don't think it was a comment on their inexperience with Everest specifically, more a comment on the climate and geography of the UK in general being nothing like Everest. Just badly phrased.
A lot of people have made it to the bottom of the ocean, but will never return.
We didn't celibrate them
There was so little accurate information in this video it should be taken down. 21,000 people have been made to believe utter nonsense.
Like children climbing a tree
Might want to check some of your facts. Conjecture is useless when it comes to something that happened 100 years ago since no one can confirm or deny some of the “facts” in this.
@@TheSaxon. I been a Michael Tracy head from way back. Join us on the discord.
Brits don’t go to “college”. That’s a horrible Americanism, when it’s assumed college=university.
Um, where and how did you do the research for this video? Lol you got almost everything wrong.
Damn Chinese
Something mesmerizing about mountaineering documentaries. Cant get enough of them. It makes me feel alive for some reason
Same here it’s an addiction for me at this point!
@@TerrorTwin ive watched storm over everest and david sharp controversy maybe 50 times. Cant get it. It draws me like a magnet
Same here 😊. I’ve also watched these two documentaries multiple times and read Jon Krakauer’s book on the 1996 ill fated expedition (still the record year for the number of deaths on the mountain) twice.
Couldn’t agree more, the skill, discipline, conquering the unknown in its natural habitat, the accomplishment must be so fulfilling.
As a climber with a decent resume it's so cool to see people really appreciate what we do and why we do it. Standing on the summit on Denali didn't even feel real. I almost quit 5 times. Once on top, I've never felt more alive, and never had a happier feeling in my life.
