  • The first Philippine volleyball player to win a title abroad, 25 year-old Jaja Santiago, tells us about her journey playing for three seasons with the Ageo Medics in the Japan V-League.
She shares with us her struggles playing as an "OFW", her learnings from living abroad and playing on foreign land, and her response to the naturalization offer from Japan. Her mom, Alma, and sister Dindin Santiago, give their take on it as well!
Kayo, kung tatanungin kayo, PINOY ba o JAPANESE?
Pero paano naman ang BUHAY PAG-IBIG???
Here's my full conversation with the 6-foot-5 middle blocker.

Let's accept the truth and painful fact that WPVT has a very long way to go, just like any other sport (like basketball) our problem is ACCURACY & CONSISTENCY.
Dami na nating mga training, pero at the end of the day its still how you execute your play. It's still ACCURACY & CONSISTENCY.

I love Jaja’s humility and her sense of love towards her family and being part of the PH WVT. Jaja will have a chance to showcase her skills here in the PH and for me it is easier to achieve the dream to play for Olympics if she will grab the opportunity. While she is young and still at her peak, hope she reconsider it.

Grab the rare citizenship offer. She can do more for local volleyball by deeper immersion into Japanese volleyball. She does not have to give up her Japanese citizenship to be a local coach later. On the side, she will be much closer to a rare Olympic stint. If she wins any medal, we should all be proud of her. Once a Filipino, always a Filipino.

Great opportunities like this don't come before a lucky person but these opportunities come to deserving persons like Jaja and other PH volleyball personalities as well. The image of PH volleyball really has changed to the better since these players (Valdez, Santiago, Espejo, Bagunas) have staged the volleyball court to a different level. All Filipinos shall give an ALL OUT SUPPORT as they give back with their dedication and hardships.

magiging malaking kawalan si Ms.jaja santiago sa Philippine team if she would be naturalized sa japan po and siguro malayo pa ang pilipinas sa olympic and but I believe walang imposible makakarating ang pilipinas don with the help po ni Ms.jaja and other players, passion and dedication po ng national team siguradong maabot in Gods time.

Congratulations Ja! Go for your dreams! One way to reach your goals to be able to play in the Olympics is to accept the Japanese naturalization. She will achieve more success in life with Japanese exposure in terms of her vollyball profession. Now is the best time as she just garnered an international recognition, winning in a Japanese league--sole Filipino athlete and MVP too. We, Filipinos, are so proud of you, Japa!
