    The signature, beautiful sound of the violin is something it is most well known for, but those of us studying the violin can often find producing this exquisite violin tone to be incredibly elusive. However, assuming good basic bowing technique, there is a simple trick to effortlessly and easily producing a top quality sound: Sound Point

    When Heifetz was asked after a concert, whether he had ever been satisfied with one of his performance's, he replied, " Once you're satisfied with a performance, it's the long way down to mediocrity". Or words to that effect.

    The best book I ever read on this is by Simon Fischer. He split the contact point into 5 levels, from closest to the bridge, max pressure and over the fingerboard, least pressure and more bow speed. And as you climb up to higher positions, those 5 levels get closer to each other and towards the bridge. Up halfway level 5 would be near to where level 3 is. You can see Heifetz do this in that video of him playing the Saint Seans Rondo Capriccoso on the chromatic descent passage. Milstein was also a master of contact point.

    Wow this sounding point even my violin teacher never go into so much depth about it. And I never knew even play between bridge and fingerboard, I never realised near the bridge or bit more higher than near bridge can make difference to the tone. He just mentioned to play between bridge and fingerboard
    Beginner like myself I really appreciate your true mastery method of teaching I will practice this over and over to find that great tone

    Another benefit to playing nearer the bridge - because the strings don't bend so much, you are less likely to catch the adjacent strings by accident. This is something I only recently realised myself, having got totally fed up with playing 3 strings at once in forte passages!!

    I got a violin because i really love the great melodies played in classical music. But i find it actually super loud and harsh from A and up. I think i should have gotten a viola. Or is there anything that can be done to counter balance the loudness and harsh tonality?

    I'm noticing that the way to fix teqnique is to do it one thing at a time... Work on this, work on that... Sometimes my inclination while I'm practicing is to try to fix everything, which means I'm trying to think about everything, all at once. It doesn't go well for me when I do that.

  • @mtguitar5150

    Will a poorly made bridge make or break your entire sound? Or can you at least deal with a poor bridge while you learn. Also can you rosin bow hair that may be decades old?

    • @MurphyMusicAcademy
      @MurphyMusicAcademy  Před 9 měsíci

      At a certain level, yes, the bridge makes a big difference. If you are just a beginner, you probably won't notice that difference too much, but I'd suggest getting your instrument properly set up anyways.
      As for rosining decades old hair. You can do that, but it likely won't stay on the hair very well, and the hair is likely to become brittle after all that time. If the bow is worth more than the cost of a rehair, then I'd get a rehair. If it isn't, then I'd suggest getting a new bow

    Greetings Mr. Murphy. I think you are producing great, firt-class videos. However, are you aware of how much of a distraction it is to have great violin music playing in the background. Is it really necessary, or just because every other video on CZcams has distracting, annoying background music (and noise)?

    • @MurphyMusicAcademy
      @MurphyMusicAcademy  Před 4 měsíci

      Well, I used to think it was necessary because, as you said, most YT videos have background music, but I got so many comments like this that I’ve since stopped putting background music in the videos
