"Sounds good" is always relative. When you're too lazy to use an equalizer on you'r recording than you may care about the speech. The speech is really simple to improve.
Sometimes it's better to know you'r equipment than using equipment that sounds better "out of the box" ;)

That's a swimming cap, protects your hair from the chlorine. And almost all pools make it mandatory to avoid loose hair (visibly) polluting the pool.

I dont think it necessarily is. The difference in the practical beach test was minor and i would be lying if i said it's worth 200 bucks, but the impression of the internal one being better probably comes from the horrible testing environment. They basically put the gopros on the bottom of a box and laid the sound producing object next to them. That's .. worthless. What is sound? Right. Vibrations. And they carry just as much through the plastic box as they do through water. The external mic filtered those sounds out, while the internal one does not. Basically they picked up background noise from the box itself, which probably made the internal one sound better. They should have hung the gopros from a string into the water or something.
Also, i'm not saying it's definitely better or worse. I'm just saying that their testing environment was absolutely worthless for.. well ..testing.
The white noise makes all the difference.
Its not about if you heared or not, its about how much you have to level up the sound to Hear anything.
The quality of the sound recorded by Sennheiser is better it just isn't as loud.

The gopro case is rated in relative pressure, not absolute pressure (assume ground level is 0 bar). 1 bar equates to about 10m of depth in water.
It's like a pop can in a submarine, you can shake it and it won't explode because the internal and external pressure balance, the same reason that chip bags "inflate"as you go up in altitude. Companies rates products in the difference in pressure between inside and outside, this microphone was just not very clear at all.

Something tells me the "Rated for 1 Bar" is rated for 1 relative bar, that is the pressure difference between the inside and outside of the case, meaning that it's rated to 10m/33 feet for half an hour. MUCH better than you thought.

I honestly think this is pretty cool. I watch alot of CZcamsrs who have fishing channels and the problem I notice is when they have their GoPro in the waterproof case (due to rain) the audio quality really suffers. To have this (for use above water) with the water proof case on actually makes sense to me.
I just realized that you have all sorts of Cool (and expensive) Tech stuff but not a pool...

Hey Linus, the reason it sounds the same under water is because the sound waves transmit through the fluid better than air. Water has a decibel limit o around 250 decibels, which would blow your eardrums. In air, the decibel limit is about 180 ish. If you want to know why, it is because air can only decompress so much while in a sound wave. Search the loudest sound on earth on CZcams and it explains it a little better than I did.

for anyone interested the reason the internal is far superior underwater is because the sennheiser's windshield fluffy bit dampens the vibrations underwater which is kind of important for sound

If you used your brain, it should have been obvious that this mic is designed to be a mic for your GoPro that happens to be water-proof, not a mic for underwater recording.

sounds like its actual purpose isnt to be an underwater microphone but a waterproof microphone, it doesnt look like its supposed to be used underwater its just waterproof so it doesnt die if you fall out of your kayak

Honestly the internal mic sounded a little better better under water because of the air gap between the case and the mic. The Sennheiser is fully encased in water, essentially picking up vibrations. The internal mic under water picked up sound rather well because the water vibrations turned the case into a speaker that the internal mic was able to pick up.

Pretty sure it was just meant for heavy rain, snow and maybe some pool play, not to be some total underwater mic, the internal being in it's protective air pocket would accel at that which I'd say was clearly evident in the vid already.

The internal mic sounds much better underwater, but the Sennheiser sounds significantly better above water. Listening on Yamaha HS8's.
Honestly, I couldn't hear any difference between the internal and Sennheiser mic underwater. But the Sennheiser mic was way better at blocking the wind noise.

I'm to used to hear the audio under water muted and with a little echo because of movies. I don't think I would hear it "natural" if it were clear.
