- Here is the story of this song. I used to play along to this live Kansas album in high school / college. It was fun learning and playing the odd time signatures. I love this music, but never got stuck being a heady prog drummer guy!
This song is not easy to play and I worked on it for exactly one hour. This “rehearsal” take was in the middle of the session when I started to get it. My face shows that I’m starting to get the pushes and pulls, I know this take could be more perfect, there is a charm to watching me get it! The interesting about this version is the intensity, determination, and raw desire to get through this song came through on camera! I can feel me going for licks and figures as I finally really learn the song. It wasn’t my best take, but it shows my drumming process and I thought you might enjoy it!
Lastly don’t ask me about the time changes, I have no idea what they are … I just felt my way through this one! Sometimes playing a song from my youth is like riding a bike, this was!
This version is from the live recording Two for The Show album.
Please leave comments and thoughts!
Enjoy!
“Song for America" is the title track from the second album of American progressive rock band Kansas. It was written by guitarist/keyboardist Kerry Livgren during the period of heavy touring for their first album. The song was released on their 1975 album Song for America, and later released as the band's third single, although it did not chart. It is known for its symphonic structure, and its lyrics showing America's state before and after colonization. The song is one of Kansas' most well-known songs from their period of obscurity, appearing on most of their collections, live albums and DVDs.
"Song for America"
The song begins with a 3-minute instrumental overture. It is dominated by keyboards, violin, and bass. It has a symphonic structure. About halfway through the song, there is an extended instrumental section in 9
8 time. The final section of the instrumental overture closes the song, over 10 minutes long. The single version of the song had most of the instrumental parts edited out, and is cut down to three minutes. This version, which was edited by the record label owner Don Kirshner, is available as a bonus track on the remastered version of the album. The flipside of the 45 featured an instrumental version of the track.
Cash Box said it features "excellent musicianship and a strong lyric line." Record World said "Not the kind of 100 percent patriotic paean you'd expect the Federal government to commission, but a more believable and dramatic unofficial anthem that carves its own niche into the Bicentennial era."
Classic Rock critic Dave Ling rated "Song for America" as Kansas' 3rd greatest song. Ultimate Classic Rock critic Eduardo Rivadavia rated "Song for America" as Kansas' 4th greatest song, saying it "delivers a state-of-the-union address that spans decades, before and after European colonization." Classic Rock History critic Brian Kachejian rated it as Kansas' 7th greatest song, calling it "Simply stunning music that is timeless."

That was awesome, Earl! One of my favorite Kansas songs. Phil Ehart would surely smile if he heard this! A difficult song to play and you killed it! 👌
@@caseyhartmann7283 thanks for the feedback and kind words Casey! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻👍🏻🥁💯
Awesome!! I'm friends with the drum tech and played in a band with him. He has taken over duties for Phil while he is in recovery.
@@mikusevic2883 thanks for watching my friend! And your kind words! Do you know Phil’s drum tech or the replacement drummer? What’s his name, I know that most of the band is retired. I hope Phil can come back soon! Thanks 🙏🏻
How is Phil doing?

@@3L3V3NDRUMS thanks for the feedback Toby! 🙏🏻🤘🏻😎👍🏻🥁
I am a a loss for words, my creative creator of sound. The first thing I noticed was the 2 color-lit toms. How cool would it be if each tom was a different color?
Next, was that unusual beat during the instrumental beginning. That was really different to me.
Third, the sounds of your toms was to infinity and beyond, wow!!!
Lastly, your drumsmanship was pure magic. The song was so-so for me, but that drumming was something I could listen to all day. Bravo, bravo, encore, encore!!!❤️🙏👏❤️🙏👏
@@gregwonhoff7161 thanks for the feedback Greg … this is an older video … I’m always look for ways to light the drum kit! A kit of this size needs a lot of lights! I only have two of my original three color lights left! Lots of interesting grooves here that are odd time signatures! I’m glad enjoyed the video!
@@earldrum I did indeed enjoy the video. Better head to Home Depot to buy more lights though.😂
@gregwonhoff7161 maybe someday?
