- Here, I take a look at the gold, steel, and Frankenstein nibs on the Wingsung 630, which seems like a very convincing clone of the Montblanc 149. I give you my thoughts on the writing experience, and provide writing samples. Nothing scientific about it, just my impressions. I welcome any questions/discussions.

Most other reviews I have seen suggest the Wing Sung 630 Steel nib version is, to quote, "a gusher". They suggest very wet and very smooth so there must be some variation in steel nibs. Again other reviewers rate the 630 with the steel nib in their top two FPs of 2023, I do see other comments rate the 630 as dry? WRT nib size, there is only one size steel nib as far as I can see on AliX and elsewhere and it is 0.5mm (although some say it is 0.5mm-0.7mm, so hedging their bets). I think it is well worth taking a chance on it, for both the form factor and build quality (based on several reviews).
I have done some adjusting the nib, and it writes just fine. But for what it is copying , it is a miserable fail....(comparatively). For example, the 699 as an imitation of 823 is a much closer imitation. The three 630s that I have [including gold heartbeat nib] are not on my top 20 pens [that include moonman A1]. But other pen friends are right at their own right. Maybe also, I was just unlikely. I ordered the 600 18k gold pen. Time will tell. Thanks for the elaborate comment. Happy new year.

I'm disappointed. You aren't the first reviewer who hasn't liked the 630. I already have the Jinhao 9019 and X159. There were some problems with the X159 at first. I just got mine about 2 months ago and I got a good one. Chrisrap59 noted that the nib units were changed at some point. Maybe that was the problem. Although it is a different style, one of my favorite pens right now is the Jinhao 80 with one of the generic Naginata or "long knife" nibs available on Ali Express. It just has an M stamped on it. I put Pilot Taki Sumi in it and it seems to be the perfect combination.
Same here. I ordered a X159 and got a X159 (after a dispute with AliX and Paypal both in my favour, they wanted me to ship a $15 FP back at a cost of $25 to get a $15 refund). Well, anyway, turns out the nib I have in the X159 is the wettest and broadest of all of my nibs, go figure. It is an excellent writer with either Iroshizuku take-sumi or Pilot Namiki ink first time, every time and never misses a beat. On topic, I'm about to buy a Wing Sung 630.

Thanks for the info. This was very useful. I have two questions.... Every writing sample in this and in other vids you do "line variation" demo by drawing 8888, while at the same time in the actual writing samples its not visible and watching how nib works on the paper, there is also no effort is being put to achieve any line variation... So the question is why that figure 8 is there? Another question is much easier - I could not hear what was the model name of that red Jinhao which writes better than all other alternatives? Thanks.
Thanks. The figures of 8 allow me to demonstrate the maximum flex capacity of the nib without putting uneven pressure on one fine vs. The other.. this is overall a general indican of how bouncy a nib is. In reality, that flexibility allows fire thick expressive descender tails of y, g, f, etc.
Jinhao was 9019 :)
I just received my 3rd 630 today and to my surprise it is not scratchy as the other two. It's a decent writer, but not as good as the Jinhao 9019.
Regarding the MB 149 nibs - do you have any recomendation where I can get one other than ebay?
If you go to pen shows, you may find it. I found a few through a good friend of mine from DC pen show.
Great review! I have a Wing Sung 630 and a 629. My 630 is dry, but not too bad. The 629 is a better writer. It is smoother and it has been reliable. I agree that the 699 is a great writer. I have two of those.
Try a different ink or drop water in your in waterman ink is wet
I completely agree with you on NOT choosing the Bock nib. I purchased a bock because at the time it was the same price as the Asvine nib. It is most disappointing. I also have the Asvine P36 with the Asvine nib & it is excellent. Save your money because Asvine nibs are excellent.
That is true. Some of the Bock nibs [1/3 for me] have worked great....but that's a bad ratio. Asvine nibems are better.
I find Hongdian nibs the best.

Awesome question. I have had several unwise purchases of Lemon 149s from eBay. I have kept them for parts....hence the extra nibs 😀.

shed light on. About the 630 model specifically your "Frankenpen" gave me an idea and I would like to consult you- I have a loose sailor kop nib with no feeder and for a long I am looking for a competiable pen to host it. Do you think that the WS630 nib and feed unit will accomdate it properly? (so the pen will work and the nib will not suffer any demage)

I tried my kop nib in p630. Didn't fit al all, unfortunately.

Another great video - thank you! The detail is brilliant. After tuning the nib and heat setting the feed, my 630 steel nib is writing well. However, it is still not as good as the 9019 straight out of the box. I’m trying to find a nib Meister in the UK to sort out my 14k 630. I also have the Majohn A1, but swapped the nib unit for a VP broad and it is great - stock EF is too fine a line for me. Looking forward to the next video.

Nice review. Have you tried their JF nibs ? How do they perform ?
I think that is the one on my cover photo for this video. I have tried it. It was a big flop. I had to do alot of work on it. It is okay now, but for around the same price, I'd go with the Hongdian Qin dynasty for a better nib, if I wanted a Chinese gold nib.
It must be the really fine nib size, because my medium SS nib writes like a broad to double broad.
Indeed, this is the fine nib, which is advertised as 0.5 mm: Blue ⋅ K: Heartbeat-F Nib/0.5mm.
I doubt if it was coincidence..
