- While Southern Locomotives Ltd and the Swanage Railway have been celebrating the return of 34028 "Eddystone", another locomotive from the SLL stables bows out of service. 4MT Tank - 80104 has proved itself to be an indispensable work horse for the Dorset branch line. However, the expirey of 80104's boiler ticket, means that the locomotive would be withdrawn on the 11th of May, pending an overhaul.
The 4MT's boiler returned from intermediate repairs in 2014, with a ticket of 7 years, and the locomotive returning to service in 2015. After 6 years of sterling and reliable service, 80104's second boiler ticket in preservation has come to an end, with the locomotive now facing its second overhaul in preservation. It's worth noting, that 80104 has now provided more years of service in preservation, than under British Railways ownership.

When I was a child, 80123 and 80124 were based at the local shed, Dundee, along with the very similar 42690-4. They hauled the Dundee-Tayport services, and I remember that, when the wind was in the south, I could hear their clattering valve gear from the other side of the estuary as they coasted down the hill into Tayport.
A couple of years ago I donated most of my personal but now-redundant footplate equipment to the railway and in return, very generously, I was given a round-trip footplate ride on 80104. I could not have enjoyed it more. Engine in top condition, crew completely on top of the job and they made me very welcome. Happy day!
Perfect timing for Eddystone to be back then! Hope the standard tank is back soon
I remember seeing her everyday when I was camping down in harmans Cross. Hopefully she'll be back soon
I've been visiting SR for years and 80104 is still my favourite loco, looking forward to it's return.
Another beautifully crafted video, melding clear establishing shots with action packed sweeping movement and a historic slice of Swanage railway record. What a lovely place. Thanks for sharing your work.
Thanks very much for the kind words. Thought it best to take advantage of the clear Spring weather over the landscape while it lasted. Glad to hear it paid off. Cheers!
Great video,as always, best wishes John.
Thank you very much
Lovely video celebrating the life of 80104. Let's hope it's return is not too far away.
Thanks very much. We can hope, but plenty of work to do in the mean time.
Looking pretty good for ten years in ticket.
Great engines.
She really does - SLL and the SR have done a great job of looking after her.
Very good video :)
Thanks very much
That means this year welcomes back eddystone and farewell to 80104
Its so sad to see her go. Do you know when she will be back in service??
Too early to tell at the moment. When work starts on an overhaul, then a rough timescale can be attributed to 80104.
@@TheSouthernerYTChannel Ok thank you!
what a lovely loco👍 hope it's back soon for everyone to enjoy
Now all they’ve got in terms of steam engines are 2 light Pacifics and a mogul
Even then the mogul isn't actually in service from its overhaul to my knowledge so only 2 light pacifics on the swanage
@@lukeslocomotives it was, it ran a week or so of services when the railway reopened
It's worth considering, the locomotives which are currently being worked on, and indeed nearing completion. The shortage is temporary - but was to be expected.
@Luke's Locomotives
The U Class has been in service, as early as the 13th of April. It was being steamed up again on shed today, ready for tomorrow.
Now that's what you call a tank engine, hopefully she'll be back for another seven years soon. And there's me thinking it was always sunny on the Swanage, you've just spoilt the illusion😠👍🏻😃
Boiler tickets are 10 years on preserved lines and 7 on the mainline
She really has been a sterling performer through her last stint in traffic.
Sorry to have shattered your illusion, it got very damp while filming those last clips.
@@TheSouthernerYTChannel But as usual you stuck it out to bring us the last of the best!!👍🏻
@@bobingram6912 The sentiment was quite literally "Well I'm here now, so stick it out"
@@bobingram6912 I am currently on holiday in Swanage and honestly even after only two days I am starting to get tired of the sun, I could just do with a bit of rain.
I believe this locos boiler has expired
That's the reason for this video. Read the description.
I’ve already seen it in the description already mate don’t worry
