you gave alot of examples of what NOT to do, but as someone new to streaming, i dont even know what those things look like. You shouuld have SHOWN more examples of what not to do
Agreed, it was just a video of his face most of the time smh
One thing you didn’t mention: intrusive borders. When I see a streamer with a border so large that it is effectively halving the size of the actual gameplay footage... yeah thats an instant pass from me. Sometimes less is more.

While it's clear that you know what you're talking about and I'm able to understand for the most part what you're saying, I do wish you showed more examples both of what not to do and maybe even a few overlays that you consider to be well designed. Don't get me wrong this is a great video I'm just someone who learns a lot more when I'm able to compare visual examples to each other. It helps me gain a better understanding and it could also help others as well
Overlays are optional. I even prefer streamers without one or very simple borders. But having waiting/brb and other screens are great. For vtubers it's a little different but it can be simple at first. New streamers, don't worry too much about it and focus on being you :)

Interesting video. I'm currently having a lot of trouble deciding what should I do with my overlay, since my canvas is 16:9 but my display is 2560x1980 (21:9), and using that resolution on that canvas either stretches the image vertically or leaves some nasty black borders on top and bottom of the screen. I just happen to leave all the gap on the bottom and fit in my cam and follow notifications there. I'm trying to minify and unify my overlay again, but I don't know what to do.

I researched this subject a lot and guess what : the most popular streamers out there don't have "beautiful' overlays. They don't have any design on their webcam window. The focus is on the stream itself. All they have is cool brb / just chatting screens and good alerts. Examples : Amongold, Miskiff, Payo, Pokelawls, Nmplol, Xqc, and many others.

I streamed for the very first time last night as a technical test, upon successful stream I decided it was worth taking an extra step and making overlays now and looked for tutorials... and then get called out in the beginning
Hej I got a lots of problems whit Twitch any can tell how to fix or direct me to a fix??
Problem are i make layouts for:
Training
Games
But when I change info in Games, for some reason the Training are removed and use same info as Gams now.
Very frustrating, when you made a good layout, and find out the other got just change as well, like they are linked.
Whats going on??

I'm scared bc I don't have a lot but I also now think I have too much on screen lol, I have a chatbox, latest follower, sub and donation + a small follower goal at the bottom. I don't think it looks cluttered but is it too much to have?

Well for some big streamers don't use overlays covering there cams. Ig in the end of the goals it doesn't matter much but being entertaining 🤷🏾♂️
Yeah, definitely. This was my first video on this channel (which is on an indefinite hiatus), and my opinions have changed a lot. I do definitely think looking professional helps with new viewer retention (easier to watch), but it's diminishing returns at some point. At the end of the day, it's all about the content - and this is just design advice coming from a motion media designer/animator. Definitely take it all with a grain of salt. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

as the title say "twitch", but regarding youtube, i know lot of youtubers who don't have any overlay, get lazy at montage, and still are popular. that's a mystery of the universe i guess!

Ahhh this video is so old - it pains me to come back and look at the horrible color grading 😂 - not sure what part of the video you're referencing (it's been a while), but I use a Panasonic GH5s and a Sony A6400

Jynxzi did every one of these mistakes and he grew from 0 viewers to the most subscribed twitch streamer and still has one of the lowest fidelity streams on twitch, his personality completely mitigated all of that.
It's been 4 years since I posted this video, and my views have changed a good bit - but I still stand by the idea that you want to give yourself every opportunity possible to succeed. A nice looking/sounding stream is easier to watch than a shitty one with no production value. Jynxzi is an outlier - not the norm. 1 in 10,000,000. That being said, you're not going to grow just streaming anyway. Gotta post evergreen content elsewhere.

@@StreamScholar well I subscribed man. I been growing on twitch. I went from Facebook to that. Facebook was good for a minute then after 500 followers my views were not there. There was no traction in the algorithm

I love the way he’s trying to say he’s at a masterclass level but yet he’s barely got viewers so pretty much the same as every teacher in any university. Can teach a subject to others but can’t do it themselves… irony
Except I am a professional motion media designer, animator, and VR developer - so I know a few things about design.
I did stop streaming/content creation because it was terrible for my mental health, though ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The biggest streamers on twitch dont really have an overlay tho
A lot of the BIGGEST streamers rose to fame before the platform was mainstream, and you really have to have or grow a following elsewhere to get a following on Twitch anyway. But for example, Moon Moon doesn't have an overlay at all, but he's one of the rare exceptions - not the rule. I could say jumping off a 7 story building doesn't ALWAYS kill you, but that's the exception - not generally what happens. At the end of the day, your personality is what will sell your stream - but you want to give yourself every advantage you can 🤷

@Jackster Stream Oh, it's mostly just dynamic vs condenser microphone I think 😅 - dynamic will always sound more muffled or have more of the "podcasty boomy" sound with the benefit being less background noise (great for minimizing keyboard clacking) - and all of my old videos are definitely MORE overcompressed than recent stuff because I was too focused on getting it to stay in the -6 to -12 range regardless of peaks. Recent stuff is still probably overcompressed, though. I hate watching my old stuff because the bad color grading and more zoomed out composition make me cringe 😆
@@StreamScholar I got me an elgato wave 3, and using Nvidia's broadcast app to eliminate noise levels alongside of course some equalizing. It's the equalizing that gets me, not easy to mess around with.
Aside from the girls that would be better off on a Cam site. I hate how it's ruined the fun of community gaming it's all about attention & money not the fun of it. Not too mention these whinnied kids that refuse to get any kind of irl skills or jobs, like you're setting yourself up to be a looser on your mom's basement and or become a serial killer.
Twitch destroys the fun of what gaming should be about.
There's really only a couple people that aren't tainted on Twitch but they don't have the massive views and maybe that's a good thing.
