  • Start from scratch to build a new empennage fairing out of fiberglass and carbon fibre. Part 2 coming next week.

    If you haven't already, you should really consider taking a few days and camping at Sun n Fun at Lakeland Florida in the "Homebuilt camping" section before dropping it off for the paint job in Alabama. There's a giant tent set up for homebuilders, with tables, chairs, power, Heated indoor washrooms/showers. For food, theirs breakfast and supper at the tent, paid for by pilot donations (no need to bring camp stove or food) Steak night is on Friday! Theres 4 other Albertans that have made a habit of going... We all think its a lot more fun than Oshkosh just because of the temporary community that's set up (mostly RV builders).

      I would love to! Sun n Fun has always been on my bucket list but the timing has never worked for me (university exam overlap). Maybe in 2021? I understand the appeal over Oshkosh. I used to go to Arlington all the time and really enjoyed the smaller style.

    Awesome Job Stu. I am in the process of redoing all of the fiberglass (including a new cowl) on my "built by someone else" RV-8. During this process I am picking up all of the skills to build a new airplane when life slows down. Your videos are very well done, and very helpful. Enjoy watching the progress of the project. Thank you for sharing your expertise.

      Thank you - I was hoping to post videos for a year and then start looking for ways to build the channel - appreciate the comments and I wouldn't do this (and show techniques) if I didn't truly just enjoy the world of experimental aircraft construction

    Did you check the epoxy pumps to see if they put out the right proportions? Some of the guys on VAF warned me to do that. Mine were WAY off. I use a small digital scale instead. I’m building a 4 and the fairing fit was laughable so I did mine like yours but with modelling clay and CF. Fits perfect. Nice vid. My parents lived on the base in Cold Lake the 50s when Dad drove Clunks.

      I’ve never measured it. Never had an issue. Although I do see the pumps go bad over time when the epoxy starts to get older. Lucky for me I do this so much I buy new pumps every new epoxy batch which seems to be a lot lately.
      Thanks for Cold Lake comment I fly F18 and Hawk here. I’m sure it hasn’t changed much since you knew it although this year we got a Starbucks!

    Love it Stu! So excited to see the paint. FYI on mic you are popping your “Ps” which I think you can fix with a wind screen or pop filter.

    Outstanding 'how to' video. Fiberglass and carbon fiber work scare many away from attempting what you have done here but the nice thing about fiberglass work is that you can easily modify/upgrade or redue mistakes. I appreciate you videos. By the way, who will do your paint job? Loyal subscriber here.

      Exactly! Its very forgiving. You just have to try it and learn. Get yourself some foam and fiberglass/epoxy and try it out.

    Great stuff! I just did the canopy fairing on my 8 last weekend and the next thing to attack is the empennage fairing.. Hurry up with the next video I want to know how you finished it off :)

      Next Thursday. As far as finishing just making the edges nice, micro balloon filler, shot primer to look for massive voids then leave rest up to painter

    Working on finishing up my empennage kit now and just came across your videos. Big thanks for the info. Where did you get the marker tool?? Just spent 30 minutes googling every combo of "marker tool holder measurement" I could think of but no luck. That thing would make it soooo simple to mark the J-channels, longerons, and other like parts.

      Measure from sides where you want fairing to end. Then o just draw out a pleasant curve on the front - trace half of it and flip the pattern to make it symmetrical. Make sense?

    How expensive is carbon fiber compared to using fiberglass??

      Its not terrible. I much prefer carbon fibre for its rigidity. Just as an example yard of carbon is about $40 (50" wide by 1 yard length). The same size E glass cloth is about $28.

      Stu's Aircraft Factory thank you so much!! You may also be able to buy a software plug in that will remove the pops (sudden volume spikes) from your past videos.

      I have 100s of filters in the software. Just educating myself. Solution from professionals is move mic further away - simple. Thanks for helping me fix this - didn’t notice it
