- This news story was based on the burgeoning interest in computers back in 1981 when people were trying to imagine what the various roles computers would someday play in our lives. So, I told what I thought about computers and how they made possible my work in animatronics and entertainment. But the real reason I went looking for this news story today is that I have gotten the Jutta working again and will be restoring it. I needed to find that little clip at the beginning where I parked my Jutta in front of the plant and walked in so I could do a 42 years later retake of that drive. I would have thought this footage would be on CZcams somewhere, but I couldn't find it so here's the whole thing.
It's so wild to revisit a time where someone "using a computer" as their day planner was a big news story.
Right! And the computer I was using was a Radio Shack Model 1 that I had programmed myself in Basic to handle my to-do list. That was cutting edge stuff. I had not even adopted the Apple IIe yet as my favorite platform.

You're the first person to ever mention this. I was so worried when I made the decision to program Earl to Looney's part back in 1980. I knew it was wrong to do that. But, you see, we recorded the show the way it should be with the falsetto voice (i.e. Looney) doing that part like the Beatles did. But, when I was programming the movements, I really needed to open Rolfe and Earl's stage at that point and had to give Earl that part to do that. One other fact that no one knows is that I only sang the part once because my voice gave out that night and I couldn't sing it twice. So I copied and pasted the falsetto part on the second section where it was needed. That was also considered a musical crime back in the good ol' days of "real music". And now you know.

Aaron. I ran a show in 1978 from one of your competitors (in Illinois) and we didn't have near the detail in our movements that you guys had. That took a ton of work and everything is rock solid in sync. Impressive! Did you ever use carts or say with reel to reel?
Fun Fact: Czechs had TV series of time travellers, sent by Central Mankind Brain (supercomputer that replaced all politicians). The trouble is its main part was not properly leveled causing some errors.

why did the animatronics move faster than they do now
Being a new artform, we were still experimenting with the best movement speeds. We slowed down the flow controls so that the characters would look more natural, less manic and not tear themselves up. I cringe when I see hobbyists turn up their flow controls.
