    • @shadeslayer8631
      @shadeslayer8631 Před 2 lety +21

      Well quite true to history! Great shield soldiers were purely for defensive lines and not meant to actually be the defining fighter, heavy war hammer troops were designed to break defensive lines and sword wielders were meant to be the actual fighting part of an army (either sword and small shield or greatsword with backup weaponry)

    • @falsebeliever8079
      @falsebeliever8079 Před 2 lety +16

      @@shadeslayer8631 That sounds oddly specific. What period of history and where? Different places and armies had different tactics. Romans absolutely had greatshield dudes as their defining fighters. If you are referring specifically to late medieval knights in full plate then you are on to something.

    • @shadeslayer8631
      @shadeslayer8631 Před 2 lety +7

      @@falsebeliever8079 course I’m referring to medieval era (specifically crusader wise) and Roman legionaries used a great shield but their greatshields were much lighter than the medieval era ones (which dark souls usually goes to for armour basics but it does pull from all eras and areas but with a medieval Europe centric approach to armour for enemies as an attempt to appeal to a wider audience)

    • @Yawyna124
      @Yawyna124 Před 2 lety +13

      @@shadeslayer8631 I mean, if we're being true to history, depends on what part of history. If we're talking classical period and prior, then they were arguably the defining troop, being that of several notable Mediterranean and European cultures, with the Sparaba (large, rectangular, shield and spear) thought to be the main line of the Achaemenid Persian Empire, and, of course, large shields and spear being famously employed by the Greek States as well with both the hoplon, the large round shield utilized by hoplites, and with the Myceneans utilizing both figure 8 large shields and rectangular "tower" shields. Rome, additionally, is well known for likewise employing large shields and spear, as well as employing large shields with short swords. It is theorized by some that they took inspiration from the more rectangular shield shapes that were seen in later periods from the ancient Celts, who are yet another group of people in the ancient times who used large shields.
      Post Classical period, however, we will see shields grow smaller as body armor improves and then the advent of firearms gradually making shields obsolete. They will be around for a while, however, with parmas remaining in use in Italy, for example, and the expansively covering kite shield being developed in other parts of Europe, but gradually things beginning to grow smaller. However, there is, of course, the pavise, which is an especially large shield that is more or less used as mobile cover esp. for crossbowmen but for other infantry as well that would fall into the purview of "purely defensive shield."
      In places outside of Europe and the Mediterranean, we can likewise see large shields be prominent in pre-industrial cultures such as the Zulu Ishlangu shield, which is quite massive, coming in at around 5 feet long, and they're also present in Southeast Asian cultures.
      So... it's not quite as simple as "greatshields were purely for defensive lines" for, in the classical period and sometimes beyond, lots and lots of armies really liked using large shields as their primary thing since when armor isn't as good, the best thing you can have is a portable wall to stick in front of you.

But there's really obvious references like the wheel skeletons, the man serpents or even Pinwheel. Artorias is also heavily inspired.
      And by the looks of it, Elden Ring looks like it's gonna be full of Berserk references and designs just by the looks of the trailer alone. Competitor line-up
    -Cathedral Knight: A large heavily armed and armoured adversary with a sturdy greatshield. Also sporting a superb mace that can demolish armoured opponents, as heavy blunt weaponry does. Since his front is almost always protected, he should look to approach his enemy cautiously, wait for openings and exploit them.
    -Corvian Knight: A sinister humanoid knight sporting deceptively strong armour and a mean pair of claws. Due to not lugging around defensive equipment, this does push it more towards needing to be offensive and evasive, which may potentially result in it getting outlasted. However, if it can slip behind the Cathedral Knight's defense it should be able to quickly demolish the armoured foe.
    -Round 1: Cathedral enchants himself and allows Corvian to approach, after which they both trade blows. Corvian slashes into the Cathedral a few more times and does get behind him, but unfortunately repositions itself to the front. In frustration it unleashes several blows harmlessly into the Cathedral's greatshield, and gets bashed hard for its effort. Corvian attempts to break the greatshield defense but gets rebounded, but swiftly leaps over its enemy and goes in with a fast flurry of claws on the back. Cathedral attempts to recover, but is unfortunately destroyed before he can.
    -Round 2 notes: Cathedral requests a weaponry change, and is granted. He now wields a greatsword which sports extra range and enables him to put all of his strength into offensive power.
    -Round 2: Both knights rapidly approach each other... and spectacularly miss with their initial attacks. Corvian attempts to slice up Cathedral from behind while he's off-guard, but is swiftly countered and smashed away with Cathedral's kick. Cathedral rushes the downed Corvian and lands a clean hit, but Corvian is soon back on his feet. Corvian makes use of his swifter form and manages to slip behind Cathedral and begins his attack, but Cathedral staggers him with a few good counterattacks and wins the match. A very close battle, and Cathedral shows off the might of his substitute weapon with glee.
    -Round 3 notes: Corvian Knight requests a weaponry change and is granted. He now wields the rapier and throwing knives affectionately called the Crow's Quills.
    -Round 3: Corvian takes advantage of his throwing weapons and tosses a volley of them into Cathedral, doing a moderate chunk of HP to the melee-only adversary. He lands a few more, and demolishes the Cathedral knight's lifepool quickly.
    -Round 4: Cathedral Knight is tagged out by the Consumed King's Knight. A slightly more durable armoured warrior that is choosing to run with the mace and shield combo Cathedral started with.
    -Round 4: CKK starts with a self-enchantment while Corvian rapidly approaches, hitting him for a very minor sliver of damage. Corvian quickly throws a barrage of attack into CKK just for him to shrug it off with ease, swiftly avoiding a swipe of that deadly mace in retaliation. Shifting positions to their side, Corvian and CKK trade blows, which Corvian goes in for another just to be swiftly rebuted by CKK's greatshield. CKK shunts Corvian away while allowing his shield to absorb the knives, but unfortunately goes in with an attack too early and is hit for critical damage.
    -Round 5 notes: CKK subs out his shield and mace for a greatsword. Much like Cathedral earlier, he is favouring offensive power over the long-term game of the greatshield. Hopefully this will pay off for him.
    -Round 5: There is a brief moment of uneasiness before both opponents rapidly approach. Both miss their attacks and rapidly turn with their weapons raised high, but CKK smashes his down into the Corvian's armour first. Using a weapon swipe to back himself up, CKK faces himself away from the Corvian knight but turns himself around for his second attack, shrugging off a return stab to the stomach in favour of crashing his sword into a weakspot. Corvian attempts to get some distance from CKK before tossing a barrage of knives, but CKK lands his attack at the last second for both to go down!
    -Round 5: Addendum: The judges cannot identify who landed the finishing blow first, so it goes onto a tiebreaker round.
    -Round 5 rematch: Corvian immediately starts off with its knives, dealing huge damage to the CKK as he attempts to evade them. CKK finally approaches the Corvian Knight but takes another huge hit just for him to immediately retaliate with a huge hit of his own. Ending up behind Corvian, CKK punts the spindly covid across the arena and leaves him sprawling before following up with another big hit as he starts to get up. Corvian attempts to leap over CKK but is caught by a big fist to its gut, followed by a massive upward swipe of CKK's greatsword that sees it taking to the skies like the bird it represents. Against the odds, CKK has bested the superior endgame enemy! What a good show.
