  • The John Hair Cultural Center & Keetoowah Museum is the only place where the history of the Keetoowah people is told. The story begins at the ancient, sacred fire of the People in the southeastern United States and follows a westward migration into Arkansas Territory during the late 1700s and early 1800s. While in Arkansas Territory, the Government called the People Western Cherokees. In 1828, compelled by the U.S. Government, the Keetoowah People moved into Indian Territory where, as the first Cherokees in Indian Territory, they became known Old Settlers.
The Keetoowah People are known as the most traditional and conservative of the Cherokees, holding on to the old ways of the full-blood, and perpetuating the original, sacred name of the people-Keetoowah or Kituwah. Legends say if the old ways are discontinued, the Cherokee will be no more. Contemporary Keetoowah spiritual leaders say that the People will not physically cease to exist but will become the same as the non-Indian.
