I actually met Maniac outside a geek shop in Oslo last summer. Didn’t get to talk to him for very long, but he was a good guy. I told him that Chimera is the greatest Mayhem album, and he laughed happily as he was walking away. Such a chill dude for such devilish vocals 😁

I love De Mysteriis, but I get why you would hate Atllia’s vocals it took me awhile to get into his work on that album. If you haven’t already check out De Mysteriis Alive. I think Atillia sounds a hell of a lot better than on the studio album.

I had to listen to Ordo Ad Chao and Daemon to really appreciate Attila's vocals in DMDS. DMDS was probably the last album i got into from their discography (not including deathcrush), imo Attila is one of the most unique voices in black metal. My favorite aspects of his style is when he does the opera-like howls and despaired chants.

Completion In The Science of Agony and In The Lies Where Upon You Lay are just pure gold, and A Time To Die is like a Necrophagist song. So fucking awesome.

It took me quite a bit to get acquainted with Attila's vocals, but even now that I have I still think they work better with Sunn O))) as the backdrop.
The strange and somewhat operatic inflections I just feel are much more befitting with the universe-swallowing, black hole type atmosphere that their guitar droning creates.

👏🏼 Bro! I was wondering if you had done a Mayhem album review… I know I’ve been out of the loop since my youngest was born back in March.
Anyhow I like your honest ranking as always of each album here is mine even with the 5 point status:
    Studio Albums:
    1. Grand Declaration of War - 5/5
    2. De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas - 3/5 ( Admittingly took a while for Atilla’s vocal approach to grow on me for that one, I love it more for the atmosphere )
    3. Daemon - 4/5
    4. Chimera - 3.5/5
    5. Esoteric Warfare - 3/5
    6. Ordo ad Chao - 0/5 (sloppy, unforgettable, heard once now collecting dust somewhere in my collection… oh well!)
I will give Deathcrush a 4.5/5 I love it and for its historic value in the genre.
There ya go, I am in the realm of more quirky avant-garde black metal too, I like all other forms don’t get me wrong, but I like music that makes me think and gets me when I don’t expect it rather than repetitive stuff anymore. Cheers!

Tackling True Crime: The Band, I see...😏
I can understand your gripes about Attila's vocals on De Mysteriis. He's a... unique vocalist, to put it lightly. Grand Declaration of War is my favourite Mayhem album, too! I saw someone on RYM say that the album is Deathspell Omega before Deathspell Omega, and I can really hear it! The trip-hop song legitimately reminds me of Ghostmane's more metal and industrial-influenced stuff, but done 20 years earlier... Makes me wonder if he was inspired by that track as an artist, given that he's a huge black metal fan (he even name dropped Varg from Burzum in one track).

    My list:
    1: Ordo Ad Chao
    2: Deathcrush
    3: De Mysteriis
    4: Grand Declaration
5/6/7: Sorry I just can't decide out of Chimera, Esoteric Warfare and Daemon haha. I enjoy all 3.
Most people tend to disliked Ordo Ad Chao but personally it's the slowest and most atmospheric of the Mayhem albums and I prefer atmospheric black over regular black. Plus I love the high pitched screeches he does at parts of the album. I am someone who loves grindcore and noisecore and stuff like that and this album harkens to some of that sound but a lot clearer. This is still a hell of a lot clearer than Deathcrush lol.
And as for De Mysteriis I do agree that his vocals are just kinda weird and not in a great way, I still love the album but I definitely feel it's very overrated. There are looaads of much better black metal albums from a lot of different bands.

Mayhem like many others were my first ever black metal band I heard. I remember hearing Death Crush a long time ago and thinking it was the most god awful thing I had ever heard. Then I remember hearing Atilla's vocals on de mysteriis and thought it was a joke. I couldn't ever take the band seriously for the longest time. 3. Chimera
    4. Ordo ad Chao
    5. Esoteric Warfare
    6. Daemon (still good, at least a 3.5/5)
DMDS is one of my all time favorite black metal albums for its atmosphere and how fittingly spooky it gets, but Grand Declaration of War is fucking brilliant. At first I really didn't like it at all, but at a point it just clicked. A ballsy move by the band to go in this direction, but it results in one of the most criminally misunderstood and underrated albums in black metal.
Ordo ad Chao is muddy, but I think it gives the album a truly hellish and dreary character, almost akin to a Portal album at points.

Interesting takes and a fun video as usual, my good man.
Way too much to really say in a youtube comment, but I'll try for a few things.
I'm willing to bet the BM fans won't be as salty as the Kornheads but we'll see.
As someone who started listening to them just after De Mysteriis came out, I'll have to strongly disagree on your take about the vocals. In fact, a lot of the negativity you point toward Atilla here I'd be more inclined to level against Maniac. You're not wrong about Grand Declaration of War; it is a pretty cool album, especially in retrospect/after the passage of more than twenty years, but man, I just don't like Maniac much. haha
I did interview Blasphemer around the time the album came out, and the subject of influences did come up. I don't remember everything he said at th e time and no longer have the recording of the interview, sadly, but one record he did mention had been an influence on him and his guitar-playing in particular was...Dimension hatross from Voivod. I thought that was pretty cool.
While I know you weren't mostly talking about EPs, you did rightly discuss Deathcrush -- I think WOlf's Lair Abyss is an important recording in Mayhem's discography and really shouldn't be skipped, either. It's kind of the necessary bridge between DE mysteriis anD grand Declaration, which especially seems to come out of nowhere without the intervening EP. It's not one of my favourite mayhem recordings, but yea I think it's as important as Deathcrush in its own way. It was the proof that the band could survive post-Euronymous and still has a lot of influence on it, even though Blasphemer was the new guitarist at the time.

8:00 What I will say about Atilla's vocals on De Don Mysteriis is that what sounds really dumb to me is that he's actually trying to sing with the black metal goblin voice, but he can't. The lower, constipated singing sounds so dumb and then he just assaults my ears whenever he raises his voice and sings some off-key higher note. No wonder most black metal vocalists don't try to shriek in key because I find it just antithetical to the music style and its purpose.
It's like the rest of the band gave Atilla some strong vodka, sat his drunk ass on the toilet, and told him to sing to the instrumentals like Cronos while simultaneously trying to shit.

They have always been divisive and I don't remember a time when that wasn't the case. I personally love them, but yeah they probably sounded a bit funny to me at first, though it's honestly hard to remember that time now as it was almsot 25 (!) years ago for me. I think they are going for something qutie different than most "traditional" black metal vocals and I am 100% behind that. The performance is pretty spontaneous and I think you can sort of tell. Could it have been more intense or done with mroe takes? Yeah sure, but this album is the product of the people that made it in a certain time and place and mental space, and one is either with it or not, and that'sa ll there is to it.

Varg Vikernes was literally a neo-nazi, so thats just flat-out false. I will not stop.

@@Schlain666 Dude, Varg was in Mayhem and contributed to De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas, not just with his bass playing. Also, he was arguably the pioneer of nationalistic and nazism in black metal, so he and neo-nazis are definitely relevant to Mayhem and black metal as a whole.
