Explanations (Reference to context)
1. O Captain! My Captain! our fearful trip is done, The ship has weather'd every rack, the prize we sought is won.
Exp. These lines occur in Whitman's poem "O Captain! My Captain!" Here the poet expresses his feelings for his beloved captain. He has used metaphors to give vent to his feelings. The Captain is Abraham Lincoln, the 16 President of America who was shot by Wilkes Booth on 14 April 1865, and died the following day. "The ship," stands for the nation of America, and "Our fearful trip" refers to Lincoln's campaign, during his Presidentship, for the abolition of slavery from America which involved the whole nation in the Civil War. "The trip is done" means Lincoln handled the Civil War very efficiently and preserved the unity of the country in the face of much difficulty. "The prize we sought is won," refers to Lincoln's success in the abolition of slavery and preservation of the union, and it the success of "We", the whole American nation. Walt Whitman's most favourite leader was Abraham Lincoln, and he compares him to a captain of a ship who has successfully completed a fearful journey.
The metaphors of the ship, the captain, the fearful trip, and the prize won, are very apt in the context of America after Lincoln was shot dead, and the poet rightly chose the medium for expressing his grief at the death of Lincoln....
