I took 3 of the most common mics that get asked about (eh, Razer might be pushing it here) plus one relatively unknown and I went over anything and everything. Which one was your favorite? Is there a mic you'd like us to try out in the future that I missed here? What is the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow?

      honestly, i loved the Samson, but would personally go with the blue, as i am familiar with the brand and the general sound profile when it comes to my voice
      a blue snowball? if you haven't? or maybe try mics that are traditionally used as stage mics, you know? lik an sm58 or a rode shotgun mic
      and do you mean an African or an English swallow?

    I went with Yeti - as a newcomer to streaming and to sort of independent tech, (building a PC, properly setting everything up on my own, etc.) the yeti brought just that little bit of simplicity that I needed to help balance out the complexity of other software involved (and building my own PC)

  • @pyro226
    @pyro226 Před 3 lety +10

    On studio monitor headphones, I noticed the difference in the "talking loud on stream". It was picking up more of the nasal resonance (in the range of what you call low notes), that made it sound much more natural. In the "talking quiet" the difference is there, but less notable as they both sound good for that range.

  • @itsCalamari

    I think the hyperx sounded off for you because it was set to stereo instead of the ideal mode which is probably why you questioned whether it was the front.

      Which is the ideal mode? I don’t know much about “sound setting”

    • @itsCalamari
      @itsCalamari Před 5 lety +101

      @@nightfire2933 there are 4 polar patterns:
      1. Cardioid. This is probably the ideal one since it captures the front of the mic and ignores the rest (Icon looks kinda like a butt)
      2. Bidirectional. The front and the back
      3. Omnidirectional. All sides
      4. Stereo. It captures from all sides but plays in different speakers. For example, if you were to talk into the left side of the mic the viewer would hear from the left side of their headphones.

      OMG I bought this Based Solely off of your comment here and I just tried it and You're Right!!! On his "USB vs XLR EXPLAINED! - Everything You Need To Know" video the HyperX sounded Amazing!! And I was not only excited about seeing THIS video [the one we're currently on] to further see the mic in action, but I was also ready to buy! Then I saw his comparisons here and got let down. But You Saved Me! Because I saw your comment, remembered how amazing it sounded previously & decided to go ahead and give it a try! YES!! He Had It On The Wrong Setting! WE SHOULD ALL COMMENT THIS AND HE SHOULD EITHER MAKE A NOTE OF IT IN THE VIDEO OR TAKE IT DOWN BECAUSE HE'S PUSHING *A LOT* OF EAGER PEOPLE AWAY FROM IT WHO WOULD OTHERWISE HAVE A GREAT MIC! Which totally sucks. This mic is literally the best USB Mic out on the market right now as far as all of the ones I've tried. So it can save some people some money from having to "experiment" with so many. And I'm not just saying that. His previous experience with it is why he had such high expectations and also why he was so confused when it didn't do as great as he was used to! Damn. And a lot more people will see this review and get thrown off. I hate that.

    As a Samson G-Track Pro user, this makes me happy.
    However, I found that this mic has issues on plenty of systems.
    For one, you need to set the microphone sample rate to "2 channel 24 bit, 44100hz (Studio Quality)" or the 48000hz variant or else the mic with it's use of default drivers on windows tends to pitch the output down if the software used to talk over (Discord for example) switches from one device to the other
    Reverting it makes the pitch shift happen.
    Changing the sample rate prevents that.
    You'll know when that bug happens when the green light at the mute button starts flashing green and red rapidly.
    The other is that due to it's weight it's hard to mount on a microphone arm.
    The one I have works with the shockmount mentioned in the video but even then, the shockmount sometimes just droops down due to the mic's weight and makes it very awkward while streaming.
    Edit: The shockmount wasn't originally designed for the G-Track Pro. while it is labeled as such, it was for the older model, the G-Track pro screws on fine but makes reaching the knobs to finetune sensitivity a chore as they almost hide behind the spider frame and the volume knob is below the ring, suspended on the elastic bands

      Cardiod takes the sound from the front and makes a dead zone on the back of it. Which could help dampen the noise of keyboard typing.
      Last one takes sound from the front and back, so it's really only useful if you're doing like an across a table podcast or interview and you use just the one mic

    I own the HyperX and you had it on the worst and thinnest setting.
    The omni-directional makes it sound pretty weak and terrible.
    The bi-directional is by far the best, it gives detailed highs and it somehow gives it the low-end you liked in the Samson.

    • @dacejoy02
      @dacejoy02 Před 4 lety +7

      How about Cardioid? I'm really thinking if i should get it or not and was shocked when I heard the quality in the video. Then I found your comment. Is there any difference in quality between bi-directional and cardioid?

    • @DOMINOSMOFO
      @DOMINOSMOFO Před 4 lety +10

      @@dacejoy02 Cardioid is the second worse setting on the mic. It too, is a bit thin sounding. The stereo and bidirectional have the same EQ signature, but the stereo requires that you speak in the center unless you're down mixing to mono. That leaves bidirectional the clear winner. I've owned a Shure sm7b since 2011 to do, at the time, some voice over work and it's great. This was before it was popular with content makers outside the pro audio scene. But it requires some hefty accessories to make it sound it's best and in some cases, even half decent. I had been looking for a solid USB mic for a few years and upon hearing it in a couple of videos along with seeing its features and price point, it felt like a no brainer. I have no regrets purchasing it.

    • @DOMINOSMOFO
      @DOMINOSMOFO Před 4 lety +11

      @@ryanwaasdorp I've been clearly only referring to sound quality, and bidirectional is king here. And the only reason one might think that cardioid is the better option as far it's intended target consumer, is because they probably think it will reduce the capture of their keyboard clicks and sorry to say, this mic is a condenser so it captures just about everything regardless. For that matter, if the HyperX really was intended for streamers and such who wanted to only capture their voice, a dynamic mic design was the far better option. Hence, why so many influencers use dynamic mics. Yes, the cardioid setting captures slightly less background sound, but the quality dip is not worth it. And as of this past week, if one has a Nvidia gpu like I do, there is really no reason not to use Nvidia's RTXVoice software. It's a game changer and allows me to speak into the HyperX as if it were a dynamic microphone -- with a fan right on me at full power and only a foot away from the mic; it's just amazing tech. If one doesn't have a Nvidia gpu, well, there are noise gates and compressors that could be applied via other means.

I have the Seiren X which is arguably one of the worst of these 4, but change a few simple settings, set up a noise gate as it's very sensitive, and you're good to go. Sounds great. I don't expect to use one straight out the box and it be optimized for my set up, although if it is, awesome!

      That's cool! I wonder how good that actually works, wow! I can't wait to try it out on the Samson I just snatched for $65 on eBay! I have VOICE METER and I love it although it can be confusing sometimes because I also now have NVIDIA BROADCAST to worry about and then SteelSeries Gaming because I love the EQ that gives me the ability to set my overall PC's sound to "Cinematic" for when I watch movies or something and it also has a SPATIAL AUDIO feature that works globally, so that's sick too. It's a bit of a headache now though like I'm saying so having a Mic that just sounds "THE BEST" out of the Box is quite a good thing and actually feels necessary for me personally. Thanks for the very helpful video! It was great to hear the various elements you considered, and you've changed my mind about my next mic purchase, so kudos for the value you're adding here.
    Three questions for you...
    1) Could you please update the title of this video to add the word Nano after Blue Yeti? Forgetting to add that makes the title somewhat misleading for folks who actually want to compare other mics to the original Blue Yeti.
    2) It looked as if you had the HyperX Quadcast in omnidirectional mode rather than cardioid, so I'm wondering - was that intentional, and were the other mics all in cardioid mode? I've read that cardioid mode on that mic produces a warmer sound, which it seemed to be missing.
    3) Would you consider adding a short TOC in your video descriptions? It's pretty easy to break this video into just a few segments, and for someone who just wants to hear (or rehear) a specific section, having a link directly to that segment (e.g., audio testing) would make videos like this even more useful.

    Okay, watched your most recent clip, but I think what truly sold me for you, was your intro to this video. To be honest, seeing someone who is real on video just makes me feel more comfortable in listening to what they have to say
    Thank you

    I actually got the Samson when I started streaming and it took some tuning but I'm very pleased with it.

    I’m just watching this cause I wanna see how the mics are - I can’t even afford it 😂😂

    for the hyperx mic, when plugging in a headset, would i still be able to hear game sound? my headset has a volume control on it so im not too worried about that.

      TheMoon probably will need a program or set up something on your pc to hear both. Not sure

      I know it's very late, but yes you'll still hear the game like you would if you got your headphones plugged into the PC. All it does is that it also plays your recorded voice through your headphone so you'll be able to hear yourself better.

    My G-Track Pro was such a beast. I have upgraded to an XLR at this point (a Rode Procaster) but my G-Track Pro was such a workhorse. It's still my travel mic.

    Late to the video, but wanted to share what I use. For budget mic, I've been using the hyper x solocast. It's around $50 and I've gotten a ton of compliments on my sound quality. I plan on using it until I do a deeper dive into a more expensive professional mic.
