Fishing Gear Commercials (1984-86)

  • A large collection of commercial spots taken from fishing shows that were aired on Omaha's stations (KMTV, WOWT and KETV) and cable (ESPN). Some famous TV anglers such as Bill Dance, Roland Martin, Al Lindner (at his funniest in the Trilene spots) and Virgil Ward appear in several of them, pitching products such as rods, reels, lines, fish finders, outboard motors and boats. Enjoy them, and as Babe Winkleman would say, "Good fishing" ;)

Back in the day I worked at a bank, and what got me through those long days in one building dealing with difficult customers was my fishing trips to the lake or river Saturday and Sunday. Saturday was a personal day …just me out in the water not having to deal with anybody and then Sunday I ‘d go with either my friends, dad or cousin. It’s a past time that is not strongly celebrated like it used to be it’s a strong recipe for quality time with the fresh air, your loved ones and yourself

It's fascinating to see what tackle held up over time. The Ugly Stik is still popular and improving, the Handle-less design Shimano was well ahead of its time, ranger boats are still made one at a time, and the shad rap is still as popular as it is effective. Johnson tackle is all but forgotten, Blue Fox and Beetle Spin have faded away into the trout/panfish market, reels have far less gimmicky knobs and are simpler and better built, and when was the last time you saw a PH meter used frequently on a boat?

I tested 2 "beetle spins" recently; the old 1980s version from my Pop's tackle box and one i bought from wally world. Old school spin runs true and newer China import one.....it belongs in tree. I think what hurt the beetle spin was the knock offs such as Bettle Spin from Betts tackle and box store brand knockoff. My MK Endura is noisier than my Pop's Black n White MK.

Great video, back when fishing didn't cost you an arm and a leg.
I've still got much of that old tackle and still use it.
I wish they'd bring back pistol grip rods, they always just felt right to me.
I have several old Shimano Fightin Rods, and Fenwick Lunkerstiks still in use.
Daiwa Magforce wasn't alone back then, the Abu Ultra Mag reels gave them a run for their money too. I was always a big Daiwa fan, but fished more Abu baitcasters back then, but most got put on Daiwa rods.
