Most of his approval was me just helping and accepting Astarion for being a vampire. Protecting him from the vampire hunter.. I'm glad I didn't have to be entirely evil to get his approval. He also likes it when you denied the devil's offer.. overall I feel like I'm doing a good job balancing my companions...

I do believe that Larian will make it where even players like me will have to really work it. I'm planning on doing a gameplay of BG3 and my personal romance with Astarion on my channel. He's just too adorable and no other companion comes close. But he only approves of your bad decisions. Evil doesn't have to mean bad but in this ea game it does. Not only that, getting his approval means getting the disapproval of the other party members.
It's doubly weird though because he's really easy to both gain and lose approval. Even if you do lots of "good" choices you can still get him to a fairly high rank. Hell he even ends up approving of some of them instead of showing the usual disapproval.
@@unigon794 I wish it would show how much approval was being gained or lost each time. Hell, it even gives you a number for NPCs when you do something that upsets them (approval -20 etc).

I’ll fix that, but anyway- I found that he likes it when you feed the Owlbear cub, odd since he doesn’t seem to have any particular reaction to petting Scratch (and a way to farm approval *cough*). He likes it when you accept killing Minthara, Kagha, and the Goblin Camp, therefore helping the Tieflings (to be fair he also approves of raiding the grove). The party afterwards, while he says he hates being the hero you don’t lose approval for telling him to suck it up, and enjoy himself for doing something nice. Reviving Mayrina’s husband and giving her the wand, then telling him the whole unexpected turn of events was kinda funny. I’m counting this one because he could have easily preferred you keeping the wand for yourself. I also haven’t tried it out for myself yet, but he also disapproves of killing Mayrina’s husband immediately *after* reviving him. Taking down the Kuo-Toa’s fake murder god who wants sacrifices. And agreeing to hunt down the Duergar who slaughtered a great deal of Deep gnomes and Myconids. It's also worth noting, as this is more of Astarion's choice, that he doesn't feed on the team immediately. He instead hunts down animals until you give him the thumbs up to feed on whatever. Astarion really is an odd sort of companion. I mean, his approval & disapproval seem to mostly be based doing things for shits n’ giggles sake and survival. Having a bleeding heart and doing a “Good” run sounds like he’ll hate you, but it’s still possible to be in his good graces.

I have very high (it says I'm a best friend 😂) approval with Astarion, high with Gale (who's your typical good-guy), high or medium with Shadowheart and I'm not sure about Lae'zel or Wyll (not keen on Lae'zel so I leave her out & I'm a Warlock so don't really need Wyll in the party). I have literally only been choosing things that I know will get me in Astarion's good graces.
You have to be really mean to him to get him to want to leave. Getting his approval is easy even as a good person, just give regular blood donations and don’t treat him like a monster lol Btw kinda interesting that he’ll keep calling you darling and other stuff , even when he’s angry at you lol

Another playthrough I accidentally cast faerie fire on Gale back at my camp and it pissed him off and he attacked me. If you side with the Goblins I believe Wyll just leaves the party also. I've had Shadowheart flat out refuse to join my party or even talk to me if Lazel is in the group. The companion dynamic in this game is awesome. They're not automatically your buddy just because they're traveling with you. Have to earn your respect.

@@RenaissanceMotoko972 if you skip getting shadowh in the beginning and meet her in the druids grove. If laz is with you, she won't join and you have to either leave laz at camp or convince SH that she should join you.
