  • Description: Professor John Connelly gave the Fourth Annual Leiden Austrian Studies Lecture on March 20, 2023 at Leiden University, The Netherlands. Professor Connelly is the Sidney Hellman Ehrman Professor of European History at the University of California, Berkeley (USA). His books include Captive University: The Sovietization of East German, Czech and Polish Higher Education, 1945-1956 (2000) which won the 2001 George Beer Award of the American Historical Association; From Enemy to Brothere: The Revolution in Catholic Teaching on the Jews (2012) which was awarded the John Gilmary Shea prize of the American Catholic Historical Association; and From Peoples into Nations: A History of Eastern Europe (2020). He has written for many notable academic journals as well as Commonweal, The Nation, The Washington Post, the London Review of Books, the Neue Zürcher and. He is on the editorial boards of Slavic Review and Contemporary European History. In 2023 he was a Fellow of the American Academy in Berlin. The annual Leiden Austrian Studies is generously supported by the Austrian Studies Foundation, the Austrian Government and the Austria Centre Leiden.
