Great watching you do the same thing over and over . Still cracks me up !!
Love the color!-Great job as always!
Headphones are in and volume is maxed. I am ready!
Dave- You rock- and I love the raunchy comments you come up with
I agree...great color!
Make way for the limbo line Dave, damn those strings are high!
That finish is beautiful
I also love the color (colour) , it's nice to see an SG in something other than red or black.
Those are awesome guitars , all you really need with coil tap for amazingly pure single coil tone and Burstbuckers in double coil mode. It plays and sounds great.
This could be your signature lead in. Digging it
Thanks, Davie Dave
I recently bought a Telecaster in an ice blue similar to that. It is a great color. I am glad that SG did not need any reworking to get a good set up. Looks like Epiphone is actually trying to do right by their customers..
I learn something new every video Dave!!!!! Can't wait till the next one........
P.S. I received my sticker and will display it proudly. Sorry about the address thing!!!!!
I bought a verry reasonable priced Epiphone SG Special for my son. No bells and whistles, just a body with a neck, 3 way switch, 2 x tone and 2 x volume.
After a new set of strings, straightening out the neck and some frett end rolling it soon became his favourite guitar. Just besides the Ibanez GIO he has, and the MiJ Ibanez RG Prestige model.
I've been an Epiphone fan for years. But this year I think they knocked it outta the park!
Lots of upgrades across the board. And a couple of the acoustics are made in Nashville.
Hope yer doin' good Dave!
✌💀👽🎸
Yes I have a couple of lectures to! Casino and another one.
Epiphone is really upping their game this season.
Hey Dave. Who does the lead in to your videos? Who ever makes them does a great job.
I have a red one and love it.
another great job dave. one comment, use ghs strings .009 gauge on the gibsons and epiphones. they make the guitar sing
Another job well done
Just got a 2020 Epiphone Muse sg! What a killer guitar! Hard to find sold out except for zzounds.com metallic blue. New Gibson shaped headstock. Great reviews. Killer guitar. Epiphone really upped their game on these new models.
I so love that color....good choice to the owner
Agreed
Pelham Blue - my favourite, got 3 Epis in that colour, but not an SG.....hmmm.....uh oh :-/
@@lexluthier8290 "uh oh", indeed. I love that colour, too. AND there isn't an SG in my collection. How am I going to explain this to my wife?
Alex Mitchell you don’t..... easier to beg for forgiveness then ask for permission lol.
@@JMac. I dunno. Over the last 37 years, I may have finally burned that bridge. (Especially since I've bought a new Fender Bass and a Rumble 100 amp in the last couple of months.)
Concur,,Dave,,great color.
That looks like the Pelham Blue model.
With the 1961 style pickguard that is/was originally a dealer's exclusive available only from Zzounds & American Musical Supply.
I know because I have one.
It's a sweet playing axe and it didn't have cello-like action like that one.
The pups didn't sound bad in crunch mode but weren't overly impressive through the clean channel.
For the money it isn't a bad guitar but I sold it nevertheless. I'm a Fender guy...
I made a sandwich and sat down at my desk to eat it, and what do you know? A new video from Dave. Hope your first day at Solo went well.
That is a nice color!
dwblue00videos So nice!
Nice color.
Epiphone really did it up from what was shown at NAMM!
Ernie ball paradigm is the competition to daddario's pricier NYXL strings
Hey Dave! I got an Epiphone EJ200CE and was kinda curious if you knew what sized feeler gauge would be correct to use on this beauty? It has a 12-inch radius neck.
I'm gonna try the P90 Epi.
Nice....what are you doing Dave....
wow i was in the music store today buying strings and had a look at this model... that and a 900 dollar gibson LP JR... had a good laugh at that one...
The Anarcho-Luthierist for real
can’t wait to check out the 2020 Epiphones. Especially the 50’’s an 60’s Standards. The new/ old epiphone headstocks are cool and they say they’re set necks with long neck tenons and classic wiring harnesses. Full size CTS pots
Out of the 5 Epiphone guitars I have, the 1966 SG G400 Pro was the only one i did not have to set up when purchased brand new. It was perfect. Even my high end Epi's like my 1960 Tribute Plus and Custom Pro LP needed a fret job and full set up and they cost twice as much! I really wish they spent a little more time on the frets. I just purchased a PRS SE Standard for $500 new and it is absolutely perfect out of the box. The care they put into their guitars is taking my business from Epiphone. Not knocking Epiphone, they are great after some work, but I'm tired of doing fret levels and full set ups on $675-$820 guitars purchased new. Even my Gibsons had high frets. This is one of the biggest factors in a guitars feel and tone and I just do not understand why it isn't done better from the start. Ever notice when you play an Epiphone at a guitar store the action is really high? It's because they are betting on the customer saying "I like this guitar and I'll just lower it when I get home". Then you lower it and get terrible fret buzz and realize the neck is full of high frets and that's why the action was set so high.
Maybe stop buying cheap guitars
@@davekiddie4467 So Gibsons are cheap guitars? What the hell do you play?
I have the same sg in alpine white they come set up terrible I straighten the neck new set of strings it plays pretty close to a Gibson.Epiphone is stepping up there game.
I just got a Harley Benton model of that guitar (Friday), and it too seems to be perfect. Maybe I have to bring the pickups higher up, but that seems to be it!
me too dc custom love it
Dave, do you check the string action height at the first fret? I had a tele that I had a hard time intonating because the 1st fret action was too high. It was an older guitar, but it had definitely not been adressed before. Just curious.
Davie's impressed with the EPI! ;)
There are brand new Gibsons which need fret work to play right. But, they cost triple what these cost to start! So, that's saying something.
Sweet finish. Saw the Epiphone line at NAMM 2020. They totally brought it. The Muse line is mouth watering. The SGs are staggering. ES guitars are... are... Aaaargh. At the price points they're offering why would you even look at Gibson?
Good looking guitar. Too bad some (most) retailers hang "gooched up" instruments on the wall for sale. So we end up taking our chances and buy sight unseen online.
I think sweet water had an option where they could set up guitars to your specs for a small fee when you bought a guitar online, but I think they did away with it which is a shame.
Had the same issues with brand new my epiphone sg special. Lucky I sold it!!!
Try an SG G400 PRO. They are so much better than the low end Special.
@@12south31 Thanks m8! cheers!
@@TheGiovanni139 No problem! I think they are great guitars!
We ARE good to each other, mostly. It's just YOU we're mean to, Dave! LOL!
4:22 Intonation
Most of the time when I see a new Gibson or Epiphone, they have the action jacked up like that because they set the pitch of the neck wrong at the factory. This, or the nut is cut incorrectly causing buzz at the first fret. Easy fix of you have the correct tools, but not for all.
Well there were no issues other than bridge height. I'm not sure why you feel the need to suggest all that other stuff.
Not bad for a mass produced Chinese guitar. Just needed to adjust the bridge height.
The probuckers in the SG pro are fantastic pickups it's only called a pro because of the pickups.
Paradigm are the best strings I've ever used. Unbreakable with a guarantee. You pay a bit more for them but i replaced all my strings with Paradigm 9's.
Are the wraps around the ball ends soldered on the plain strings? I never outright break strings they just unwind on me. :(
I LOVE the new headstock design with binding, but can barely stomach it without. I think Epiphone guitars are getting really good (I'm no tone snob douchebag, but I can't really tell their new Probuckers from actual old Gibson pickups, and the fit/finish, fretwork, etc. are totally fine straight from the factory these days), I hope it grows on me a bit more. I don't see why they don't just use the same 'open book' headstock as Gibson on all their Gibson designed instruments, and something different on the Epiphone 'Heritage' models (don't know what they actually call them, but like the old Casino and stuff). We all know what they are by now, haha!
This one wasn't as long as usual but shows us to be careful when buying anything new and to know their so called setup sucks. I like my fingers and action like that is needless. I have walked into guitar stores and picked up the first guitar and it had action like that so I turned my head side to side then walked out. I figure if they actually wanted to sell something they should check and set the merchandise first.
I wonder what store this one came from. I got literally the exact same model (it even has the same finish) from AMS the day this video came out and the action on it was pretty decent out of the box. It wasn't as low as it possibly could've been, but it was still comfortable to play and a hell of a lot better than this one was.
Dave have you seen the new epiphone line up for 2020 , dude they are awesome with the new old style Kalamazoo headstock and the new made in USA hollow bodies .
Yeah their great. Got my eye on an LP Jr when they finally come in. Vintage wiring, CTS pots. can't wait.
@@sailormike1089 thanks for the reply Dave . love your videos , so keep on rockin and good luck at solo .
@@sailormike1089 Also rounded off frets and fret ends for the whole line.
Were the fret ends too sharp ?????
Wow! Do you have to buy a custom shop guitar now to get even a half-assed setup? That thing played like full ass at 8/64's.
THOSE ARE GREAT FKN GUITARS...
Gotta love the box shifter stores that don't give a fuck.
I predict a high fret.
Just sad that the action wasn't set within spec at the store, which should only take ten minutes to get it pretty close and at least playable..
How about from the factory? Sheesh!
Although yes, the store should be held accountable too. Maybe bring in Dave's bill and get a refund of that much on your next purchase!
In my experience having purchased 5 brand new Epiphone's, they set the action really high to disguise the high frets. Only one out of five had level frets. It was also the least expensive one I got, an SG G400 Pro 1966 edition. All the other ones, ES339, Les Paul 1960 Tribute Plus, Les Paul Custom Pro and a Standard Plus Top LP all had high frets, and most in the exact same spots!!!! I expect to do a full set up on them at their price point but 2 I had to do a full fret level and the other two needed a handful taken down. After that and a set up they are great guitars but for $500 I started buying PRS SE 24 Standards which have all been absolutely perfect out of the box!
You are correct!
I think new Gibsons have dry fretboards.
Had one in the cherry color. Regret selling it every day.
There are new epiphone sg's that are an improvement over these, also sg specials in those two colours, but with p90's.
What, no power tools? 😄
Might be a stupid question but shouldn’t the store have set the thing up?
From Leo: Stores don't have enough mark up on a $425 guitar to absorb a set up cost. As long as people shop bottom dollar, the service has to be streamlined. Street price is exactly that. I have never seen a music store refuse to set one up for a minimal service charge, but most people don't want to spend the extra money.
I think you meant the factory? I just set it up myself and i think it's kinda expected for guitars at this price point. Not a big deal to me since i like learning about guitars, and i like setting them up to the way i like it, but i can see why other ppl would be annoyed. I bought an sg just like this one but in white finish and it came setup horribly out of the box. Action was way too low, buzzing strings, the fret ends were a little too sharp for my liking, and the truss rod needed to be adjusted. I gave it some tlc (adjusted action, intonation, truss rod and smoothed out the fret edges)and now it plays fine. Just wish they wouldnt lie to their costumers. The tag inside the box said the guitar was setup at the factory. Lol
Would be nice if they were all this easy.
I wouldnt watch. I like the ones all Gooched up. I learn more. Great videos Dave.
Agreed. I've been watching Dave for years and have absorbed a wealth of good info. Would have stopped watching if they were all the same and easy.
Just curious how you tune & intonate the guitar with it laying on your bench like that?
A quality strobe tuner. It's a MUST to do an accurate setup with.
I'm not sure the brand he uses but I know he has one
Reginald Fitzpatrick it's a Peterson.
Dave has been questioned many times on doing intonation in the prone position rather than the playing position and he basically tells those people to calm down he does also check it in the playing position.
@@67goat67 Thank You, I figured as much as I see many doing it that way. Myself I do it in playing position so I only have to do it once, but I don't do 10 guitars a day, he prob does.
From Leo: Gravity pulls on the string exactly as much no matter what position the guitar is in. Magnetic pull does not change. That leaves guitar structure. If the guitar is bending enough to throw off intonation, the guitar would be out every time you changed your left hand or changed your strumming.
The admin has temporarily turned off your ability to post or comment in the group until Friday, January 31, 2020 at 10:56 AM. Learn More. thanks DAVE !
You could oil the fretboard. The intonation didn’t need adjusting after adjusting the height of the bridge - huh 🤔
Did it come with an attached headstock?
Yes, it's an Epiphone not a Gibson.
@@12south31 The exact same design made with even cheaper wood. Sounds legit.
@ Same wood, mahogany. Here is what you are missing tho, the headstock on a Gibson is 17 degrees which makes it prone to breaking. Epiphone uses less of an angle.
@@12south31 My Sheraton Pro II snapped easy enough.
Mahogany is a generic term used for dosens of tropical hardwoods.
@ What did you do to it? I've owned dozens of guitars over the last thirty years, 15 years touring, and never had one break. I've got 5 Epiphones currently and never had an issue.
I can probably name that nation wide chain.
It is a nice color...can't quite place it...blue graphite? Ah, "gun metal"...yeah, that's it...

Looks like a bad setup right out of the store!!! Crumby Store!
They know what they're doing. If it already has fret sprout, neck joint fretboard hump, poorly cut slots in the nut it you won't know it with the action set high, they'll just say "oh once you set it up to your preference it will be comfortable to play".
From my experience the neck joint hump happens a month after the warrantee expires. lol
So i went to a basketball mn.timberwolves had a 27 point lead with 4 min . To and lost in overtime by 4 points to the sacramento kings oh boy
I NEVER see you stretch your strings. wut?
Lotta flat notes on that intonation 🤔
Shame we let corporate giants screw us when were spending few hundred to thousand on a tool a instrument new that needs work done and I'll Stp there to stay inside ubby's guidelines
Is that a paul ferro fretboard? Quite ugly.
what is a Paradigim? 20 cents duh
I made the mistake of buying one of those. It’s the flimsiest neck of any guitar I’ve ever played. You can honestly bend a note a half step just by flexing the neck , which is too easy to do. Pretty much impossible to keep in tune. My Gibson SG cost twice as much but is 10 times more stable and sounds better.
If you play it sitting down you can control the "vibrato" a lot better and use it for some pretty chord shaking or feedback. But yeah mine is hard to keep in tune while standing up or really being loose with it. I suggest using it as a sitting guitar.
Joel Middaugh That was the biggest surprise to me. You really can get some “pretty” tones out of the SG. I didn’t expect that.
@@thomasschrein7584 at under 2000 the Gibby is a better buy probably. I kept my Epi Sg because it as the best fret work of any Epi Ive owned, and because even though the neck bends easily it finds its way back to zero on its own, I dont have to mess with the truss very much once I set it up.
Brand new guitar should have been setup before it was ever given to the customer. L and M would never give me any guitar unless they knew it was 100%
