- The Pixel Fold folds more ways than one. Grab protection for your device HERE: www.dbrand.com/shop/pixel-fold Today we are durability testing the Google Pixel Fold. A brand new folding device from Google. And... well... it does not do so great. The Google pixel fold is first scratched, burned, and bent and ultimately fails the JerryRigEverything Durability test. Hopefully Google can strengthen the phone up a bit for next year. Hit that subscribe button so you dont miss the autopsy. I mean teardown.

The reason why it only opens to 178 degrees out of the box is to account for tension over time. This way when it finally expands to 180 degrees after a few months of use it doesn’t end up with a very visible crease in the middle. I am no fan of this phone at all but this specific point I thought was pretty clever.

My guess to why it shut down is that the flame was right on top of a temperature sensor and made it think the whole device was overheating. Would have been interesting to see you try holding the lighter on another spot

It's actually good for the industry to see a foldable coming from Google.
The only caveat is if they keep it building in it or just killing it after a couple of iterations.
Phone lasts just 2 years, and flagship users buy it every year.
Need to make it just a bit more durable so it survives a year
Exactly, me myself I upgrade my Pixel to the New one every year
@@Gameplayer55055 Where I live, phones have to last 5 years, by law. The manufacturer is liable for any faults due to workmanship or materials for that time period. My current phone is an S9 from 2018. I buy flagship models specifically to _not_ have to buy a new phone every year.

I think you coincidentally lit the fire exactly where the tensor chip was inside the phone while doing the burn test, the intense heat felt by the phone mightve gotten it to freak out and turn off.
That seems likely
I’m completely shocked he didn’t try again in a different area to rule that out. First thing I thought of as well.
Do pixels not display a heat warning when they get too hot?
@insainllama they do but if what I say is correct then the heat change was so sudden and big thst the phone didn't have time to show the message

Hey Jerry! I have an idea for a test you could add to your durability tests to make things interesting. You should do a test where you drop the phone into water and then pull it back out. To test the IP water resistance.
You could just do a glass of water.
The Pixel fold didn't pass the durability test, but Zack definitely passed the alliteration assignment, amidst awe-inspiring accomplishment.
Puzzling possibility, pal. Perchance, did Zack partner with a potent AI ally like ChatGPT to provide such prolific prose? The perpetuity of his persuasive and playful performance proposes a potentially profound partnership.
@@madm4ttyProbably. 😂

Wow...weary of words now...we are, aren't we?
Im actually very impressed to see the phone survive being filled with dust/debris and slammed open/shut. Rumor was that a speck of dust would destroy the inner display. Well, according to one tech reviewer anyway.
That's why you definitely can't take what they say at face value
@@BrianGlaze Never do!
Who is it?
@@GH0STST4RSCR34Mwell that’s a L take, if they didn’t want to get the rating they could just say water resistant. And paying for the rating is 100% worth it for the increase in sales
@@GregOfficially it's not an L take, nothing that person said was untrue. A lot of them are just as resistant but just don't want to pay
I know the tests are "extreme" but it's also good to see if you buying something that is built to handle those extremes or not. Gives you a bit more trust in the rest of the build quality.
I fought buying a DBrand for years due to their price being so high. But the lack of grippy cases for new iPhone led to try them. Their GRIP case is the best case I’ve EVER had. EVER.

I think I am still a few generations away from my first foldable.
Maybe two more generations. They are getting better ...
- Water resistance is now available,
- Outer screen is usable,
- Software features make use of the larger screen,
- Inner and outer transition is better,
- More apps recognize the form factor.
- Et c.
This 'phone' fad seems really dumb to me. I don't understand the utility if complexity and cost are all you're really adding.
Samsungs foldables are very solid today. If you want to buy a foldable phone I don't think you should wait any longer. There won't be any major updates anymore because they good as they are
@@---fk1ct ... The problem is that most people use their phone as their primary computer ... But the standard phone screen at 6.6inch - tall form factor - is too small for some needs, like reading documents ... So the inner screen is supposed to fill that need .... So that the foldable phone becomes truly the primary computer for such an individual.
The only issue is that alot of useful features have been removed over the years which diminish the power of the same phones: Analog audio jack, Mem card slot for external storage, et c.
My one requirement for foldable is that it should not scratch at level 2. Which basically means I will never buy one. 😂
I went through 2 google phones in 18 months in my farm job, my Samsung S9 has stood up for 3 1/2 years. I'd like to see a side-by-side of these extreme tests with different brands

I would love to have just the front size of this fold. Seems to be ideal size. Actually looks a bit like S23.
I don't understand why anyone would like this form factor. No phone has ever had that form factor and people have never complained that their phones were "too narrow"...because they weren't. Google just made their Pixel Fold ridiculously wide for no reason and are calling it "a normal smart phone experience" when nothing about that width is normal.
It's almost as wide as a Z Fold 4 using a thick case with S Pen holder on the side!
If you put a good case on the Pixel Fold, it's basically guaranteed that the side ends of the phone are sticking out/up from inside your pocket when sitting down. Width is the most uncomfortable metric in regards to form factor when it comes to pockets.
And for what? The extra width doesn't even do anything, really. Meanwhile the unusually short hight means you'll spend more time scrolling on many apps. There's a reason there are no square phones...width and hight have different values.
Like, I'm honestly curious. What do people like you enjoy about a phone that's unusually short and unusually wide?
@@bexclue3007 Well, I was not really referring to the wideness rather than compactness. But that the front display just looks cool. iPhone Mini is nice compact but it's too small. S23 I find that was the perfect sized phone (for me). Also iPhone X was good size ngl.
@@bexclue3007 I would have to disagree with you. The Samsung fold is definately too slim and I personally prefer the wider screen. I think it fits more naturally into the app ecosystem.
@@bexclue3007 I can almost say you never used a 16:9 phone. People complained back in the day when phones started to be more narrow, because it adds black bars at the sides to the video (but they keep makig phones like this until people never cared, same like headphone jack removal). Having a more rectangular shape is simply better because most of the content is made on 16:9. Now opening the foldable, and it has a more tablet shape. The other foldables looks squaerish when open. I would gladly use a wider phone, and it's the same reason i won't buy a Xperia phone because it's too narrow

8:38 “It’s not the hinge that failed, it’s actually the rest of the phone” 😭🤣
🥺
At this point I would think companies would pay you to do this test BEFORE they release the final version
I'm pretty sure that happened once. The LG G6, I think
Well analyzing structural weak spots can't be that difficult. They left the antenna line there by choice. Probably on the safe assumption most people would close the phone before setting it anywhere, and even if someone sat on it while open, you'd need to get pretty unlucky to get it to snap like that.
From the looks of it, to break the phone, you'd need to set it open face down on a soft surface, and full-force sit on it. If it's on a hard surface it wouldn't bend enough to break. And if you just sit down and jump off as soon as you feel something on your ass, you probably won't bend it enough to snap it either.
It still sucks that the phone failed. But if I was in the market for a folding phone, I wouldn't consider this test results a deal breaker. And the phone's resistance to dust was bloody impressive too.
They already do these tests. They don't care about a random guy on CZcams trying, and obviously, managing to destroy a phone by doing everything you shouldn't do.
He doesn't want that... That wouldn't enable him to rag on Google as much.
Based on my own usage, I suspect the lighter was right at the CPU. That's where heat seems to emanate from during heavy use.
I always wondered, do you pre record the test and then talk over it? Cuz thats impressive, with all the timing and stuff.
The alliterations in the dust test part of the video is what I live for on your channel. Keep it up Zack 🔥

Great video Jerry as always.
5:34 "the entire METAL bezel, is made of PLASTIC" 😭😭😭
The dust test was the one I was nervous about but it looks like it's fine with that. No one's gonna fold the phone backwards on itself but I think the hinge being next to the screen and not under it allows it to just keep going around.
And apply so much pressure that your hands are visibly vibrating.
Can be sat on and there goes the phone 🤷♂️
@@HatArmor in fairness he did this to every folding samsung phone and none of them broke. the reason the pixel broke is that the when the phone is unfolded the edges of the screen where the hinge is do not meet. on the samsungs they meet in the middle and completely cover the hinge meaning the pressure of bending it any further is resisted by the edges of the two halves. (source: me, i have a fold 3) The pixel has a gap so theres room to flex it further than it should be flexed. check out his durability test for the fold 3 to see the difference.
however these videos are there to show you the durability under extremes. Though i would be worried about maybe sitting on the phone after leaving it on the couch and not realising it was there. that might be an issue.
@@lifewithbreion1392 i think it has a better chance when being sat on, because the pressure would be applied more evenly and also be protected by the seat in a sense (the small weak points of the phone would be less likely to be affected)
also, it's probably gonna be folded anyway if you're sitting on it
I usually fall asleep with my fold3 in hands, wake up and find out I ended up rolling over it all night. The phone still works Flawlessly after 2 years of abuse. Looks like Google version of foldables won't handle that accidental pressure when on beds or on top of soft materials, facing down.
Zack, you're a riot, as always. This one got more brutal to watch by the second. 😆😆 I like the form factor, too, but I'm sure I won't be purchasing a Pixel Fold anytime soon. Up next for me should be the Z Flip 5, on 7/26....already have the reservation in.
Informative and entertaining. Nice work!
8:50 that felt like crushing an alluminium can omg
Watching this video with pleasure through my Z Fold 3 😂 btw, one thing that I believe it also helped Google's phone not withstand the pressure backwards, it is its wider lenght, which helps creating more grip for Zack's hands and the distribution of force is larger as well.
Slightly more leverage from the extra length
OMG your Fold themed string of words that start with the letter F gave me V for Vendetta vibes. Exceptionally done! :)
It’s insane to me that you’ve never had a phone shut down due to heat. I’ve had all kinds of phones, and if you work outside in the heat, every single one I’ve had has at least turned off due to heat 1 time. Pointed directional heat must not be enough for most phones to recognize it; it’s probably sensitive to heat of multiple parts heating up simultaneously rather than one short, pointed, high heat incident. They’re meant to protect against like a super hot day, not a pointed flame lol

For the Fingerprint sensor, i like the position of it more on my S10+ than on the Powerbutton (for those who don't remeber, its under the screen where the Lock Icon is on the pixel fold) but i get that it is easier for the Companys to do it in the Powerbutton now.
If they do it like that, they'll have to fit TWO in-screen fingerprint readers, one for outside, and one for inside. Costly and unnecessary wastage of space in a device that is anyways trying to become thinner.
They could go the LG route and put it on the back. But since you don't grip the phone the same way when folded and unfolded, it will be an issue.
Not to mention unlocking my LG V30 when it was sitting on a desk was always a bit more of a hassle than the rest due to needing to lift it a little.
