    Not sure why he keeps comparing this to Airplane. They are nothing alike other than being comedies. I'll take this any day over Airplane. This movie is genius.

      Oddly enough though, this was marketed as being just like AIRPLANE! when it came on home video. The VHS cover showed a flying guitar with the same knot in it as the jumbo jet on the AIRPLANE! poster.

      “It’s marketed as being just like Airplane!, how so?”

    That was Ed Begley, Jr. on the drums in that black & white Beatles-esque section. He was in Better Call Saul with Michael McKean, who played lead singer David St. Hubbins. Billy Crystal and Dana Carvey were the mimes. Rob Reiner is director Marty DiBergi. This film is a who's who of popular actors from the early 80s. Fran Drescher (The Nanny). Paul Schaffer (former David Letterman band leader.) Howard Hessman (WKRP in Cicinnati) as the rival band manager at the hotel. The beloved late Fred Willard as the officer at the base. Everyone's in it!

    The Stonehenge scene was actually inspired by Black Sabbath. During one of their early 70's your they wanted to design a Stonehenge stage set. But when it was finished it had been measured in meters rather than feet,making it 3X the size of the original and useless considering there wasn't an arena back then that could hold it.

  • @jimhoyt5
    @jimhoyt5 Před rokem +8

    It's funny you say it's British humor because none of the band members are actualy British. All 3 were Saturday Night Live cast members though, and they did actually write all of these songs. That's why we see other former SNL cast members like Billy Crystal, Dana Carvey, Paul Schaefer, etc in the movie.

      Christopher Guest (Nigel Tufnell) has a British father and spent spent parts of his childhood in the UK. Through his father he is a member of the British Nobility, being the 5th Baron Haden-Guest meaning he can be addressed as Lord Haden-Guest. His wife, actress Jamie Lee Curtis, is properly titled Lady Haden-Guest.

      I know what you're saying but technically speaking, two of the band members in the film are British. The drummer and keyboardist are English musicians who played in the bands Atomic Rooster and Rare Bird respectively.

      I saw that tour in Phoenix, Adrian Belew was the guest star extra bassist for Big Bottom. One shtick they did was the "are we loud enough for you" bit followed by them turning up the amps (two or three times during the show). By the end it was almost painful and honestly the loudest show I've been to. I haven't been to a huge number of concerts but I've seen Metallica several times and also Black Sabbath, Megadeth, Anthrax and Slayer (all on the same bill). But by the end of the show, Spinal Tap was louder - as befits "England's loudest band".😄

    My dad worked and stayed in NYC during the week and came home to the country house on weekends. In the city he would take himself to the movie theater. He saw 'Spinal Tap' the movie on the big screen and that weekend all he was taking about was Spinal Tap. Later on we watched it together on video and he was laughing so hard snot was coming out his nose. I was surprised he got such a kick out of the movie.
    There are subtleties to the Spinal Tap movie that only true long time rock listeners would get or at least fully appreciate such as David Saint Hubbins' girlfriend being a Yoko Ono type dragon lady. Or 'Big Bottom' being a rip off of the Queen song, or the shallow trend riding of 'Listen to the Flower People'.

  • @Grithron2
    @Grithron2 Před 2 lety +4

    A lot of the script was improvised - also the All The Way Home song-fragment was made up on the spot as the cameras rolled.
    The logical next place to go in music-parody movies is The Rutles: All You Need Is Cash - almost literally Monty Python does The Beatles. (If you review that one - and I'll be shocked, and stunned, if you don't - make sure you find the unedited 90-ish minutes version rather than the shorter and blander "tv movie" edit).

    This has got to be one of the funniest movies of all time. I saw it in the theatre when it came out. I have never been to another movie where the audience were laughing so loudly all at the same time. I missed half of the movie because I was still laughing at the last joke. I now know this movie by heart but it still amuses. The commentary on the DVD is just as funny as the movie itself. Spinal Tap actually did some tours! I saw the unplugged and unwigged show. Just hilarious.😅

    You guys were great together on this, you were the perfect reactors for this particular movie!!! Definitely you guys are a good team, keep it up, definitely for comedies. Watching you guys crack up at this movie was making ME crack up. The absolute proper response to "This Is Spinal Tap"! Maybe check out National Lampoon's Animal House (1977) and Caddyshack (1980). Or "Dazed And Confused" from 1994, a great movie, would love to see your reaction to that one! Or "Boogie Nights", Paul Thomas Anderson's masterpiece. I could see you guys killing on those.

    Sooooooo many musician inside jokes come from this movie. It's definitely a farce, but not as much of a broad farce as Airplane! If you're looking for something more along the lines of that, you've got the Naked Gun series, Hot Shots, Dracula Dead And Loving It, any movie by Mel Brooks or any other movie from the monty python boys.

This is a brilliant ‘ mockumentary’ and Guest has 3-4 others that are just as funny. React to Best In Show, Mighty Wind or Waiting For Guffman. BTW, Airplane is nowhere near as funny as this.
