  • I found these coho fingerlings in a disconnected pool on the Perseverance Creek system in Cumberland. Perseverance is the right word for these little guys. Many pools have already dried, leaving dozens of tiny bodies in their absence.
    Though the still waters are a threat to the coho, evidently they yield far more food for the fry as well. The small pools were teeming with all the tiny creatures you'd expect to find in vernal pools, leaving the fry with no shortage of food. The question is, will rain come before the water levels decline too far?
    Thankfully the forecast isn't too hot, and there could be some rain in the next week. Anything would make a tremendous difference for these little creatures.
    I'm grateful I got to see them. Here's hoping they hang on and make it until fall, and eventually, to the ocean only 20km or so away (as the river runs).
