At the start of the 19th century, a new powerhouse emerged in #America's business scene: Cornelius #Vanderbilt, also fondly known as "The Commodore." His story begins in 1794 in Staten Island, New York, where he was born the fourth child in a family of nine. Cornelius grew up in modest circumstances, a stark contrast to the immense wealth he would later accumulate.
The roots of the Vanderbilt legacy trace back to Utrecht, Netherlands, in the small village of De Bilt. Here, Cornelius's great-great-great-grandfather, Jan Aertsen, a humble Dutch farmer, decided to seek a better life in New Amsterdam, the city later known as New York.
