  • On our recent trip to Pennsylvania, we took some time to stop by the Nakashima workshop and talk with Mira Nakashima, designer and daughter of George Nakashima. Mira talks about her father, the shop, and craft in today's world.

My father worked with him before I was born (pre-1952) and learned a great deal that he used throughout his life. Eventually he built an airplane and it was a woodworkers dream job. We have several Nakashima inspired pieces in my mid-century modern home that I've lived with most of my life. Love the black walnut and Nakashima style.

Extremely difficult to be the child of a famous artist - it doesn't matter when you've inherited the skills and have your own eye; you inevitably get less credit. George's work is beautiful and Mira's work is beautiful; and the whole team's work is beautiful.

Compassion is a fine thing. It is a good human quality that we want to look at the better side of a person when considering their legacy. George did some good work, I wouldn't want to belittle him by saying otherwise. As to the real quality of the man, however, I would suggest that he was a complex individual with a rather dark side as well. There is more to his story from people that are still involved with what he created, than they seem to honestly want to put out.

Quoting from the forward of the Japanese language edition of Mr. Nakashima's book, 'The Soul of a Tree', "Although he despised so much of the world around him by the time he died",... One can only wonder why a man that received so much acclaim and success from that same world, came to despise it so much? My guess is that beyond anything else, for whatever reason, the bitterness and jealousy of his character prevailed.

I had personal contact with George, and know of others who did as well, and their response was similar to mine. I have politely asked his daughter to explain her father's odd behavior, but she has never chosen to do so, or responded in any fashion whatsoever.

Why be mean? Support woodworker? What do you want a Hug?

    OK...
    So why bother ?
Why spend time stirring the pot of a dinner that's been over ?
George is George ...no man is perfect .
I agree with George's frustration concerning the world.
Very sad type of reality man is pushing .
One thing for sure ...Judge a man by his fruits not his faults .

As for( f9qo ) sorry you feel so bitter about the man!!! Pick up your own tools and see what you can do in comparison!!!! Talking about a man like George is easy when, and after he's gone!!!!

People can criticize me for leveling claims against someone that is no longer around to defend himself, I can understand that point of view. I will say that I take the liberty of having made my earlier statements, because at the Nakashima establishment they continue to try and perpetuate a myth about a man and his so called righteousness and wisdom. Who could argue that it is not good for business to do so?

  • @f9qo
    @f9qo Před 11 lety

Hardly. Even the man that wrote the preface to George's book, mentions Nakashima's unhappiness with the world. He was a selfish and bitter man, people that had contact with him, will attest to it.
He never supported younger or struggling craftsmen, he only wanted success for himself. He also never expressed any appreciation to the traditions from Japan that he utilized. No intention here to be mean, only to express the truth. "Zen master", oh yeah. It is too funny.

"Zen master", oh give us a break! George was a selfish man that was filled with bitterness. Orders smorders, what did George do to support other woodworkers? It is a hidden fact. Hardly a memorable character.
Why don't you quit knocking people about whether what they have is natural or not, give us some truth yourself.
