    From MP designer Brent McLeod (Scriptacus):
    www.reddit.com/r/titanfall/comments/6o9cxy/respawn_ama/dkg8an5
    "Re first person Titan embarking: We did further discuss, and even prototyped it shortly after launch. The amount of work required to fully implement the feature (multiple entry animations and high fidelity cockpits for all of the MP titans) was out of scope for the resources we have available."

    • @cowfangirl420
      @cowfangirl420 Před 6 lety +9

      Alix1723 I think they wanted an all around polished experience. And basically it would have taken so much work to coordinate all of the possible ways you can enter the Titan without it being a quick jerk to where the animation begins. While I personally think it would have been neat, I'm happy they're aware of their limitations and went with a more fluid looking embark.

    • @screams3
      @screams3 Před 6 lety +5

      The cockpits are already higher fidelity than the Titanfall 1 ones are, though.

    • @AircraftFTW
      @AircraftFTW Před 5 lety +4

      So the correct way to take this statement is that "We already made the game, we are adding it to Titanfall 3." The most important thing to take away from that reddit post is that the first Titanfall was so budgeted compared to Titanfall 2 that saying something like that is simply public relations bs.

    A lot of people agree with you on the embarkation animations, on the subreddit, the forums, everywhere really.
    I also hope one day to be able to check a box that lets it stay in first person mode, at least just for those animations. The executions in third person are fine the way they are.

    • @Javaa01
      @Javaa01 Před 7 lety +15

      And it actually helps to have the executions be third person animations, since you are invulnerable to damage while they are playing, you can leverage that to allow you to dive in to groups of enemies going after doomed titans, and other players have the chance to surround you in the meantime. Compared to that, the third person embark animations only really allow phase embark to not look incredibly jarring to use, and to quickly let you see if someone is trying to rodeo your titan, since during embarking and disembarking animations your titan (and by extension you) are completely vulnerable (thus making it very inadvisable to embark your titan if you happen to not be piloting it, and it is being surrounded by other titans) unless protected by the dome shield, and if said dome shield is active, you are more or less impervious to all damage yourself while standing inside it, without even having to embark your titan, allowing you to take your time and have a look around the environment for possible threats. Though, from a technical perspective, the third person embark animations do allow them to spend less resources on rendering the cockpit and textures within them, without you really realizing it, since that way the game isn't quite literally rubbing your face against the textures, so that helps the game to look more visually impressive and in a sense more coherent on lower spec hardware, such as consoles.

    They made the third person animations because of budget and time constraints.
    While they probably wanted to make first person animations, they would have had to make two animations for every single embarking sequence. One for first person for you to see and another for third person for other players to see. Making the embarking animations third-person effectively halves the amount of animations they would have had to make for each titan, which makes sense since they made twice as many titans for titanfall 2 as for titanfall 1.

    • @slvrcobra1337
      @slvrcobra1337 Před 7 lety +27

      While I see where you're coming from, I don't really buy that excuse. First, they aren't even new Titans, they're the same chassis from the first game but with more stuff taped on them depending on which hero you choose. They could've just ported over the animations from the first game and it wouldn't change a thing.
      Second, each chassis is made the same way, they're all bipedal humanoid mechs with a door on the front and the top, so they shouldn't have to go through any more stress making animations than they did in TF1. Every Titan type has the same animations but with different touches on certain ones.

    • @orian2759
      @orian2759 Před 7 lety +4

      Honestly i would be fine with the TF1 animations but 'Remastered' like the TF1 maps in TF2 because they don't really need to change them as there was some variety with entering the cockpit of the titan in TF1 and all they need to do is polish the textures but i do understand that they would need to texture the pilot and the interiors of each titan (cause that would take some time as well), but what do I know I'm not a game developer

    I think the sense of scale makes more sense in titanfall 2 since you can see the entire pilot entering. although I would much rather have 1st person animations. My explenation for the change is:
    - as you said, to show of skins
    - To make people less motion sick when entering (there are a lot of times where the head quickly turns 180 degrees or the head gets tilted)
    - The phase shift embark would probably look a lot worse
    I think there should be an option to choose between the 2, but I would much rather have 1st person animations

    I've also had the same issue with the execution animations too.
    I mean, it's pretty handy and cool being able to see clearly what you're doing with your enemy, but when you're on the receiving end of an execution, it doesn't have the same sting or ramification as, experiencing a sneak attack you should've been more careful on.
    But like the Titan embarkation, it's not a *big deal*.

      @Gorrfinger Před 7 lety +2

      Laurence Davis 1. Doesn't matter what game we're playing 2. it's based on personal preference 3. the camera is fixed anyway, so you can't see anything.

    • @laurence2013
      @laurence2013 Před 7 lety

      Living Meme Look at 0:07. You can see the background with 3rd whereas the entire screen is taken up with 1st. It does matter what game we're playing. This is action-packed FPS multiplayer, immersion is not important like it is in other games which are far more tense and suspenseful like Outlast. You would think that in a fast paced game like Titanfall people wouldn't mind a few shifts from the 1st person as things are moving so fast anyway. But no, people crave ''immersion'' despite entering and executing titans continuously. 3rd person executions look great and fit with the cinematic gameplay.
      Think about executions involving spinning and turning like with Ion prime and Scorch prime. If they were 1st person, you wouldn't see what's going on. Understand that 3rd person animations give developers a lot more creative freedom.

    • @Gorrfinger
      @Gorrfinger Před 7 lety +4

      Laurence Davis Listen, people who actually care about the game they're playing know that immersion matters no matter what the fuck you're playing. there's a famous quote by one of the DOOM developers. "First person is important in games because it makes you feel like you're in the game, where as third person is like playing with dolls, virtual dolls that is."

    One plus about the 3rd person animations is it allows them to do more ridiculous stuff in the executions and terminations, while not making the player dizzy from all the movement. I feel like after wanting to adjust those, the first person embarkment was probably the odd one out that Respawn decided to conform to the rest of the animations. I would love to be able to do them in either perspective but I doubt it will be something for this iteration of the Titanfall series.

Even getting terminated was fucking awesome, seeing a massive robot hand punch through your monitor and toss you across the pavement. The fact that tf1 was fully first person was so immersive and satisfying, and really made the game stick in my memory. I heard somewhere that having executions and embarkings in 3rd person for TF|2 might not have been what Respawn originally wanted, but was done to save development time. They already have to animate it in 3rd person for other players to see, creating a 1st-person version of the animation for the player doing it would've taken additional time and manpower they didn't really have for making the sequel.

  • @daebelly9844
    @daebelly9844 Před 6 lety

    I completely understand, and the third person animations threw me off as well. However, it's undeniable that the camera doing a swing can definitely help with map awareness. In that moment of embarking, you get a near 360 degree view of the battlefield. This lets you look for oncoming pilots, titans and all sorts of other things coming to tear your chassis a new one and plan around it.
    For example, I'm a Northstar user. Turbo and Viper thrusters are all I use on her. When embarking once, I saw a doomed titan nearby preparing to try to kill me right away. Immediately after embarking I turn to them, boost over and execute them. Without the 360 camera turn, I'd have no idea that the titan was approaching. Though I would definitely activate first person embarks if it were an option, nothing beats the classics.

    Although I do agree with this, the 3rd person embark does actually help with situational awareness, not always with surrounding enemy pilots (due to their small size) but if there's an enemy Titan even somewhat nearby, that rotating camera tells you exactly where they are, and perhaps where they're going. This isn't always necessary (as when you play a Titan like Northstar, you'll be calling them in in the outskirts anyway) but if you're the kinda dude that loves to try to call in your Titan right on top of someone else's, that 3rd person rotation can potentially mean the outcome of the battle for you
    All in all: yeah I would like an option to turn off and on the 3rd person embarking so you can turn it off when you don't plan on needing it

  • @misterman3187

    i think third person helps not the immersion, but the sense of scale and power. you actually _see_ the titan grab you like you're a little doll, and put you in the cockpit. you get to see how big they are compared to you, not just how big their hand and cockpit are. i think MP should do it like SP. it's third person so you get the real sense of scale and power, but you still see the inside of the cockpit for the immersion aspect. only wish they could go a step further and just make the inside of the cockpit display the titan model and environment on the other side, rather than giving an entirely new overlay and HUD. it would be cool to see the pilot HUD go away, and with no black screens just see the actual cockpit on the titan model physically display a screen, so if you were to go in theater mode and fly inside the cockpit, you'd see what the pilot sees. that would give it the most real sense of getting in a mech, not just "yay i got a new overlay and my playermodel is bigger"

    I think this should have more traction, the option to change third or first person animations would be an amazing thing, but there are different animations for all the Titans so it'd be some work, I hope this idea goes to fruition but I can see why if not

    maybe they decided that they don't need to make it more obvious that a titan is bigger than a pilot. I like the 3rd person entry cutscene- allows you to see a portion of your surroundings and decide your first action when getting in your titan. Half the time you call one in there is an enemy titan waiting for your dome shield to drop. In a 3rd person entry view you can see where they are, and even see if they're priming their first offense such as Ion waiting with laser shot or northstar with a charged railgun. The Immersion aspect is in the eye of the beholder.

    • @devongee1776
      @devongee1776 Před 7 lety

      showing it once in campaign should get the message across that you are now 8-10x your size and well armored and equipped for fighting small infantry. They don't need to emphasize on it time and time again, having it in 3rd person allowed for them to create sick entry animations, not just one where your titan grabs you and puts you inside.

    Prefers an animation that leaves you with no idea what's going on in the backround, over one that does. There is plenty situational awareness in the third person. The background is not blurred to the point that you cant see the BRIGHT RED enemies in the background, you can see them perfectly fine. The camera rotates at a pace that allows you a quick 360 view of your surroundings while not being so fast that you cant see anything.

    Titanfall 2 also only have all the same cockpits. In titanfall 1 they were all different and you FELT like going in the titan and also another thing. There were SO MANY embark animations which i loved. From the side. Back. Top. Front. In titanfall 2. Its just front back or top. And the titan just grabs you if your on the side. In titanfall 1 it would be different on if your left or right of the titan. And in titanfall 2 when you embark it just black screens and then the cockpit appears. Its not like in titanfall 1 where it dosent just black screen in titanfall 1 when you enter the titans you see the hud light up. In titanfall 2 its basically gone the embark.

    Awesome video, I completely agree with you. Titanfall 1 and 2 are fantastic games but man, no first person Titan embarks in T2 has really bothered me since launch. Jumping into a Titan in first person made it feel so real (I would even shift around in my chair sometimes as if I personally was getting situated in the Titan). The third person animation really takes me out of the game. The sense of scale is also off for me as the titans do seem smaller (even though you see your pilot for comparison). Like you said, these are all just personal opinions. But damn, it's crazy how this one thing really bothers me even though I'm a huge fan of the game/series.
    Respawn has always been good about listening to the community and their last three updates to the game really show it (carry 3 weapons again, frontier defense, RISE!!). If it's possible, adding the option for 1st person embarks in T2 would be incredible. If not, I really hope they bring it back in the next game.

    Titanfall 2 was meant to be much more of a spectacle than a gritty scifi shooter. The animations are in 3rd person because it shows your character being a badass and pulling off cool stunts in wacky camera angles
    This becomes especially prevalent when you view the 1st person mods people apply to this game. Most of them look like shit, nothing against the mod creators it’s just that these animations weren’t meant to be viewed in first person. They weren’t meant to be immersive
    I did not mean to go off like this but I love these games and can’t wait for a 3rd one

    totally agree ,whilst getting a titan in the first titanfall , I would always think "alright bitches , GET READY FEEL THE THUNDER!" but the second its like " yo lads got my titan , *yay*" I don't know if it's the animations but you could be on to somthing. and in titanfall2, It doesn't help to convey that "exhilarating titan feeing" when you're so vulnerable to enemy pilots FFS!
