You need values in application.xml for EmailServerHost, EmailServerPort, EmailServerEnableSSL, EmailClientUsername, EmailClientPassword, EmailMessageFrom, and EmailMessageTo for the Email button to be usable and you should also put in values for EmailMessageSubject and EmailMessageBody

It should be easier with the latest version. Click on Email Settings on Dashboard.
