I absolutely love the 32mm Touit as it gives the classic albeit updated Planar look that matches true Planar lenses in other formats. As much as I’d enjoy a truly athletic AF and weather sealing, it’s not very relevant for 99% of what I use it for. Glad to see the updated video Benj. Thanks for doing it.
I picked up a used copy last month for £200 and I think it's great. I prefer it to the 35mm 1.4 I used to own.
These Planar lenses are superb…

Currently using one on my FX30. Look is great but the focus motor is soooooo noisy. I find myself focusing first and then recording anything I need the audio from.
So you think that to buy this lens used is a good idea despite your copy had issues with AF?
Benj is this lens still viable for 2024 ? I was looking at the Viltrox 27 1.2 any opinions ?
It's cool that Zeiss sent you a properly working lens. Didn't know they still care about their Touit lineup. That said, I am curious what was really wrong with the previous sample you had. Just firmware? Old age?
I believe it was firmware, but it could have been something else from just being a loaner for 10 years or whatever. Who knows if it go dropped or something along the way. Also apologies for me just seeing this 7 months late ;)
I was about to make the same comment. I hope Zeiss care enough to continue making more lenses for X mount and update these trio as they are fantastic.
Zeiss offered a free firmware update for these lens about a year or so after their original release... the owner simply had to spend the money to send it to New York to do so... I believe that originally the lens was designed for use with contrast detect cameras.... and the update made the camera compatible with PDAF (phase detect) camera bodies.
Got my Touit around two years ago and it still is my main shooter. I just love the "clunky" af, it feels so mechanical and the design is very minimalistic but still fine looking. And we don't need to talk about those classic looking pictures, its exactly my style of photography!
This is my dream combo. XE-4 and Touit. Damn
how is this lens perform in term of IQ and AF compared to sigma 30mm?
It’s just a different look and not nearly as clinically perfect as sigmas lineup and more akin visually to fujis og 35mm 1.4 R vs say Fujis newer 35mm f2 r wr or 33mm 1.4 lm wr. If you prefer lens character, that special Zeiss planar bokeh and the 50mm focal length you will adore this lens.

I’m never sure when someone reviews a lens and only shows photos that have had a filter applied. Pretty sure that doesn’t help get across how the lens renders.

That's a crowded space in terms of focal length with Fuji 33 1.4, and the Sigma 30 1.4 options. Nice video as always

Its nice but not that much better than the Fuji 35mm f2
which is smaller, lighter, cheaper and fits the compact size of the Fuji system.
Unpopular opinion, his pictures from this video with this len seem hella fine compare to other video.... Am I just imagining it? 😅

Because it's about output for me. I'm not really interested in shooting charts and brick walls, but there are channels for that, I'm sure. Same reason I watch cooking channels that show me what the food looks like and explain how it tastes after it's done too. But yeah, it's all about what you're looking for.
@@benjhaisch It has nothing to do with shooting brick walls and charts. Your presets overexpose and blow out highlights, and completely alter the images in terms of colours and rendition. Lens reviews NEVER make sense when using presets and I'm not entirely sure how youtubers reviewing gear don't realize this.
@@lanycera I guess a remedy for this would be to go out and get your own copy of the lens and test it out yourself in your ideal conditions and draw your own conclusions.
To get people to buy his presets. I don’t blame him. I would do the same if I spent time developing them.
...had the same problem with my old XF 35 1.4... always made my firmware update fo my pro stuff- and forget this one...now it become a turbo- not worth to look at the the new XF 33 ...
"I'm assuming it's focus by wire". You're doing a revue on the lens. That shouldn't be something you assume it should be something you know.

Don’t think I’d spend money on any lens not a Zeiss Voigtländer or Leica.
This feels slightly irrational...and nearly impossible if you shoot Fuji
you probably dont know much about optics sure you can shoot with 200 dollar lens but thers a huge difference bw that 200 dollar lens and a 1000 dollar lens thats why we buy thousand dollar lens even when it has only manual focus for that image quality it outputs try one yourself and youll see my point

Hey, the nature of the zeiss lenses is rendering rich detailed images. From your examples we see overexposed and high contrast. Best is not to use any presets of over edited images, so we can see what how the lens really performs.

This lens is not very good, it does not compare to any of the Fuji lenses, and for me, it’s not a real Zeiss lens(I’ve shot with 3.

How is it not a real Zeiss lens? It’s optically nearly identical to other Zeiss planar designs including the beloved contax 45mm planar…
