Afghanistan's destroyed Buddhas to return - BBC News

  • When the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan in 1996, they imposed an extremist version of Islamic law across the country. They tried to erase all traces of a rich pre-Islamic past and ordered the destruction of ancient statues, including the world's tallest standing Buddhas.
Those memories are still alive for millions of Afghans. And now they have become present concerns, as the US and Afghan government negotiate with the Taliban for a deal that could see them return to power in Afghanistan.
The BBC's Shoaib Sharifi visited the National Museum in Kabul where a team are rebuilding some of the ancient Buddha sculptures that were destroyed by the Taliban.

knowledge to faith. With only a limited cultural inheritance of the past
upon which to build, the Greeks produced intellectual and artistic
monuments that had served ever since as standards of achievement. So in
some ways the single most legacy of the ancient Greece is the civilization
in India and ancient era is particularly influenced by the Greeks,
especially in Art, language, culture and mostly covers the all aspects of
      Human life
2)."The contribution of Greeks in Indian knowledge and culture is so profound that it
has maintained to survive more than two millenniums. "
3). "The Greek artistic approaches largely influenced on Indian art by the Buddhist
tradition and persisted into the later Gupta period. The Greeks are very famous for
their innovative and the anthropomorphic representation of the Buddha in Indian
      sculpture "
4). *"The Ghandhara School of Buddhist art hence grown up under the great influence
of the Greeks. The Greek initiation of sculpting the Buddha in human form
matured and it became a major part of the Buddhist iconography."*
5). *"The Greeks also introduced their own architectural and sculptural forms,* like
cupids, friezes and Corinthian columns into the Buddhist school. *Several Greek
mythological figures were incorporated into Buddhist architectural works,*
including Heracles, who became equated to Vajrapani21. *The Greek skills and
techniques were endured till the epoch of Gupta. Gupta‟s realistic
anthropomorphic representations of the Buddha reflect the legacy of the Greek
      artistic influence."*
6). *"The two strains of Mathura and Gandhara are finally combined in the
greatest school of Indian Buddhist art. During the last century of Greek-oBuddhist
era, the Gupta Empire arose in central India. In Gupta‟s sculptures, an
idealogical resonant of classical Greece took place.* The physical existence of
Mathura, the intellectuality of Gandhara, gave place to a quality of pure
spirituality. 43 *The Greek influence at this point was finally absorbed and
transcended. It gave to Indian Art its techniques, its plasticity, mind its most
sublime image; it has helped to liberate it from the primitive and uncouth images
and forms of the ages before the Alexander;"*
7). *"The Greeks influence on Indian Astronomy:*
In the earlier ancient Indian culture, the advancement of astronomy in India came
from the practice of astrology and the recognition of Indian astronomy is due to
that of the ancient Greeks.44The Gargi Samhita of the Yuga Purana accredits as the
mastermind of astronomy to the Greeks as well as the Aryabhata ascribes the
Zodiac to the Greeks. The Indian astronomy found many innovations by the
influence of Greek astronomical tradition. Such as India contributed in giving the
name of the days of the week and precise calculation of the length of a year, this
contribution to the science of astronomy go back to the Greeks period.4"
      8). "The ancient Greeks came
across and ingested astronomical information that was arising from a well
developed Mesopotamian civilization. Consequently the ancient Greek astronomy
brought forth the magnificent scientists; they transferred the astronomical
approaches into theoretical science. According to this science the Universe is
      JPUHS, Vol.30, No.1, January - June, 2017
      204
moving along with mathematical objectives that could be inferred by logic and
      reason as well."
9). "In ancient Greek astronomy he
introduced some extraordinary progress, such as the calculation and rotation of the
Earth related to the specific stars as twenty three hours, fifty-six minutes and 4.1
seconds (actual 23:56:4.091) and the length of the year was 365 days 6 hours, 12
minutes 30 seconds was just 3 minutes 20 seconds out of the length of the year.
This calculation is called of sidereal year. 50 However, there is a variety of
discoveries that have been attributed to the origin of ancient Greece. As an
example we can mention here that Anaxogoras (510-428 B.C) explained first time
that the Moon shines due to the reflected sunlight. The Earth spins are attributed to
Philolus. Nevertheless, the involvement through the astronomic sciences by such
Indian astronomers as AryaBhatta and Brahma gupta were invaluable and,
historically, second only to those of the ancient Greeks.51

@Ashoka Correct. Including Mongols and so on. However. The Greeks left a massive and profound influence on Afghanistan, central Asia and India of which much of it's legacy is still alive. Like in the rest of the world that the Greeks influenced, it was culturally, intellectually and artistically speaking in most cases rather a great thing for the many facts out there. For instance. Today's much of Afghanistans greatest monuments are Greek. From the citadel of Herat in the west of Afghanstan all the way to the Greek gandaharan Bamiyan buddha's in the center of Afghanistan all the way to Ai Khanoum in the East of Afghanistan and many cities and archaeological sites around Afghanistan but also in Tajikistan, Pakistan and in India.
So one day if tourism ever was to come to Afghanistan, these things will help Afghanistan.

Our ancestors were Buddhists and they have lived their lives happily and peacefully, until their religions were forcibly removed from them. We should all change our religion back to the original Buddhism, as it was the religion of our forefathers, to give true respect to them. We can become Buddhists by practising the Teachings of The Buddha. Buddha has taught to do “no harm to ourselves and no harm to others” as his principal peaceful message. How can we become a Buddhist? By following the Buddha’s teachings of Love and kindness to oneself and to others by “not doing evil things, to purify one’s mind and to cultivate good”. No one can make you or unmake you a Buddhist. It is in your heart and you can practice it in your daily life. We don’t have to shout that we are Buddhists. By practicing the Buddha’s teachings, we become a Buddhists. We make it ourselves from our hearts! ازشما تشکر.

Hindu Vedas = Monotheistic + Added Guru Books Into Mainstream Marvel Polytheistic Gods, With The Trinity Of Brahma, Shiva & Vishnu.
The Vedas Mentions Prophet Muhammad In Numerous Verses.
Zoroastrian Avesta = Monotheistic + Trinity [Ahura Mazda, Ahura Vouruna & Apam Napat] Later Added, Akin To The Gospel.
      The Avesta Mentions Prophet Muhammad.

Buddha Mentions The Coming Of Prophet Muhammad, Also Stating He Was A Prophet Of God, Not To Be Worshipped.

@@omarlittle-hales8237KEKEKEKEKW. I'm so tired of reading this copy and paste sophism. Y'all ain't no scholars, stop acting like you are qualified in fields you've never studied. All your words are conjecture from a basis of being unqualified in the topics you're reaching into.
the Vedas do not directly mention Muhammed, you're thinking of a much later puranic script that's been massively corrupted over the years (Bhavishya). The Vedas themselves hold no direct mention and the spots you think do allude to Mohammed, you aren't even translating correctly and the correct translation is not in your favour. There is no Sanskrit scholar that would agree with you .
If you actually understood the philosophies you are picking from, you'd see how your beliefs contradict fundamental aspects of dharmic philosophy.
Where is Mohammed for the Avadhut? You cant answer that, and that's an issue for the position you hold.
And the vedas were not monotheistic in the way you are saying as such. *They mention nirakara and sakara time and time again,* visualizing in their pages different forms and qualities of their forms. You likely dont even know what nirakara and sakara is without google, and even then you won't understand any more than a quick snippet of a definition. *Can you please also explain viveka and vairagya and how they relate towards all this relative multiplicity? Oh you cant?*
And with Buddhism, what you just said about it literally contradicts the very foundations of Buddhadharm. First of all you just said "Buddha" you are Buddha - you mean to say Gautama. You are suggesting that Gautama mentioned a prophet of God - implying a permanent and fixed self - while he also implored the reality that there is no self and everything is impermanently at flux amidst this existential shunyata? That doesn't make any sense, but you don't understand the philosophy to recognize that. Your notion that Gautama mentions your prophet, literally almost a thousand years in advance, goes against the very fabric of Buddhist epistemology.
