- I asked my American friend Ryan about the pros and cons of living in Singapore. Before moving to Singapore he lived in San Francisco for 9 years. Ryan has a lot of stories about the city and life there. So I decided to get some tacos and nachos to surprise Ryan. In return, he’ll have to tell me what it’s like - to live in San Francisco and then move to Singapore.

I am a naturalised Singapore citizen and I travel quite a bit. I do think Singapore can get boring sometimes but that is because I stay in one place and do the same thing over and over again. But everytime I travel abroad whether it is japan, Malaysia, USA, europe, Hong Kong, China, I am always very happy to come back to Singapore. Why? Because the infrastructure the transportation the food the cleanliness and most importantly safety (I am a woman) is something that many other countries cannot match. I guess if you guys get bored just travel and you will appreciate sg more when you get back.

I’m an Asian American that was fortunate to have the experience of living and working in Singapore for 2 years before pandemic. I live in NYC and have travelled in many countries and cities. Safety, cleanliness and efficiency is what’s drawn me to want to move there again. It’s also depends on where one is in their life. Other expats thinks it’s boring but there are many countries and cultures that is worth exploring and very close proximity. Singapore is a great hub for the rest of Asia. There are so many positives for me personally. Great to see this and everyone’s comments.
I happily embrace boredom anytime.
Having travelled to the US for the past 30 years , I cannot comprehend the Asians who choose to live there. The Asians who hangout in Chinatown do not appear to have a better life.
It is not true that Americans are all friendly. Especially not in New York.
In San Francisco, the fast food restaurants employ security at night. And certain streets smell of urine. Homelessness is everywhere.
The US only appeals to those who don’t travel and are ignorant.

Welcome to Sg, Ryan. Hope u and your family could assimilate well into Sg culture and interact well with us locals. SG is small but there are plenty of things u can do & explore together as a family. If u miss real huge mountains there’s plenty just a short flight away.

I was in Cape town and Rio as well. Rio is quite safe if you are in the right neighborhoods. I went to the beach and pubs at night without much problem. A friend went to visit a favela, and said he had seen much worse in Mexico. In Cape Town I felt quite unsafe, and a friend who lives there goes around in an armored car and his house is like a bunker.
Now, an acquaintance got stabbed in SF! Your mileage can vary a lot!
Yes Singapore is boring if you make it out to be. Treat SG as a hub for you to springboard to various SEA countries nearby for what SG is lacking. SG has always been the heart of SEA like what the British did as a regional hub. SG can only offer people and communities for you to interact with, the rest is up to you to make it not boring.

Singapore is boring? The lack of news on mass shooting or other violent news do not make us boring.
@@uwet.8826 It's not because of that. It's because of the culture and rules. You don't see people partying in the streets, loud music and chaos like in Bangkok for example. Bangkok is the opposite of Singapore because of the culture and lax rules, one of the most fun cities in the world.
@@kayflip2233 I am sure that Singaporeans wouldn't mind loud music and chaos as long as they don't affect them. Why must the love of loud music and chaos of some override the love of peace and serenity of the rest?
I don't mind any place is boring. I mind if the place is dilapidatedly old.

I think it is always good to understand the differences in the financial demography of students enrolled in international schools vs local schools. This perhaps will partially explain why some local students are lacking but yet will be most eager and willing to gain some international exposure.

Security is one thing which many people take for granted in country like Singapore. Its only become reality when one stepped aboard. I remembered when I was in US, I have to be constantly aware of the surrounding around me, where in Singapore, I can walk almost everywhere without thinking so much. But security alone does not make me dislike US, it is a big and beautiful place with lots of great portion of food.

Agree. In Paris, I couldn't even close my eyes when taking the RER after my flight. There were people who were constantly staring at my luggage.

@@wumingkkk my colleague was in Rome. Someone threw powder on his back, and another one told him about the powder on his back. My colleague's instinct was to reach to his back and tried to dust off the powder and the same person also joined in" to help him to dust off the powder". Within a couple of minutes, he realised his limited-edition Breitling was gone "just like that". I often say this to people that Europe's pickpocketing is as finessed as its haute couture.

Interesting sharing on life in San Francs. Btw, the CNA videos on Changi Prison, the prisoners were sleeping on rafia mats, super thin ones, no where comparable to the thicker tatami mats.
Also curious, have Max done a video about NS life here b4, either from an expat point of view if they have a child who went thru NS or a local who went thru it.

When you said most Asians are quiet, I actually agree only to a certain point. Met and worked with many Asians from different countries. Filipinos (and I'm one) can be quite gregarious, very friendly and chatty. I'm guessing Max has not many many Filipinos. Perhaps you can interview one who works in Singapore.

Singapore’s safety is almost unparalleled in this world. It’s very easy to take it for granted. It also makes people here very complacent and dumb in a civic way.
I guess people will probably have different needs and desires pending on their age and where they are in life.
The grass is always greener when you look elsewhere and they have what what you don’t have while forgetting that the dynamics change when you’re not there as a tourist. My gripe as a Singaporean is simply Singaporean culture. Too many mainstream folks here who subscribe to the system in every way. The country itself is made for earning money and the safety and clean administration is built around that and only that. The arts and culture is only relegated to a very limited part of society and conformity has been and still is the culture here. Fringe society is always looked upon disapprovingly.
To Singaporeans, I’m an oddball and weird coz I don’t subscribe to what the herd does.
To folks in a place like San Fran, I’m probably so bloody boring and square coz I don’t do drugs and drink myself till I get brain damage.
Singapore is limited in many resources coz of size, however it’s quite easy to travel around to many places due to proximity and if the airfares are not too exorbitant.

I lived in many places and and I would say the following: big advantage of Singapore as an international city hub is that there are many different people here so you can find the ones you are more connected with, even in the art scene.
Singapore is vibrant. In fact, anywhere with a big ethnic Chinese population is bound to be vibrant given the entrepreneurial DNA of the Chinese population. But social order matters to the Chinese, as they are used to living in a high density environment. If America has the same ratio of population to agricultural resources as the Chinese, it will have 4 billion people (US ambassador Chas Freeman). I bet Americans would prize social order more then if it has limited access to water and other vital resources, just like the Chinese. It's human nature to adapt to one's environment and the Chinese people have been adapting since 221 BC .

What about New York City?
I came to Singapore for my PhD in NTU eight months ago from SF (because of my research topic and Chinese heritage). I would say if you are young, single, culture-loving, liberal, or intellectual, SG might not be the best place for you. Now in retrospect, I hated it when I was in SF, but I think the four seasons, a society full of culture, tolerance, and some people who truly enjoy their life and occupation are what I miss the most about SF. And without doubt, as an artist, California is million times better in finding a proper artist community and inspirations.
Years ago and our only trip to US, we got shouted by some blacks who stormed in while checking in SF hotel and once more across the street . 😵💫
Our tour guide immediately dived when there was a loud bang in SF Chinatown and I was wondering why he did that . That was the first/only time I ever heard a gunshot.

(referring to living in SF) "never felt threatened ..." i would say thats cos you are a young white male , so many stories of actual friends actual experience was quite different.

Thanks for sharing. Interesting stories indeed, especially on how the news media tend to sensationalise and over exaggerate the actual situations. Anyway, whether a place is “boring”, it is highly subjective and depends a lot on the individual’s personality, preferences and choices. But “danger” is less predictable and can hit you anywhere. Is it worth it?

Sometimes people tell me it’s so dangerous in Malaysia, so they better never leave Singapore but it’s definitely not so dangerous in Malaysia haha. So it is subjective 🤷♂️

You would love Singapore if you are single or married with no children or married to an Asian, have a large bank account balance or have a high paying job, like everything near by (it is a small country), and love hot and humid weather (there are some people like that). If you did not have some of these attributes, you would not find Singapore a good place to live. That is the honest truth. I am married to an Asian who loves heat and humdity and we lived there fore 17 years.
Almost same perspective of my American boss of 28 years.

Give me safe. The more I read and learn the more I know dangerous is worst than I believed. I think that traveler has a tendency to go to bit dangerous place because our personality, so more dangerous the more I have to know about that place in order for me to go.
A place where the fun is, not the most boring and hot scorching weather on earth! Lol!
Do remember Singapore , different culture,tropical countries cannot compare to a 4 season countries culture.one thing for sure the Island is safe😊

Just a correction....The US is 5,010 times larger than Singapore not 60.
As a Singaporean, I would rather stay in us. Singapore is great for safety and security but there's no mountains and the only thing most people does for a short getaway are to Johor bahru in Malaysia and batam in Indonesia.

I treat Singapore as the capital city of ASEAN. It is so much convenient and cheaper to travel to other countries for short visits. Bali, Bangkok, Phuket, Penang, Japan, Korea etc.

usa/sfo is called GOLD MOUNTAIN in chinese...99% safe...unless u go downtown at night.... n 4 seasons... u do/say watever u like within the law...I lived in sfo from 1996 to 2019 n would never have left 4 spore except 4 very expensive health care...health insurance is us$2,000.00 per mth...u buy a pre-owned porsche 4 us$30,000.00..watch porn 24/7...food is cheap n u live in a house with white picket fence...visit disney land, L A ,l Vegas, NYC, Virgina , Hawaii etc...i love sfo... buy hate medical costs

If you could find one American who lives in Singaore and loves the place, you could probably find 10 who doesn't. Too bad this youtuber only interviews those who love Singapore. So take his advice with a grain of salt. I am not a Singapore basher, but I do feel that some of these youtube videos about Singapore are pushing a certain viewpoint that is not supported by fact.
I personally don't know any Americans who don't like Singapore. I'm sure they exist but I didn't cross path with them

I agree…it’s not like the Mexican food in the us is that great. It’s mostly the same Texmex style that is not even as good as the authentic stuff you find in Mexico. SEA cuisine >>> texmex
