Your “rant” at the beginning is 100% warranted & one of the reasons I subscribed. I cannot stand those types of clowns - seems to me like they’re the exact same ones that are still crying about the last of us. The first thing I did before I started playing this game was turn off/turn down how often her and cuff communicated lol
I think the reaon there is so much hate is because forspoken had real potential to be the 'magic' game. And for many it did not fulfill. People had witcher expectations and got an in my opinion JRPG like game. Wich isn't for everyone and not for me either. So it's mostly just disappointment.

Maybe he also allowed his emotions to get the better of him. People have good reasons to complain about this game. For me it's easily passable.
You're probably one of the most underrated reviewers I know rn, your reviews are very much to the point and straight forward from the pov of somebody who plays AND enjoys various genres of video games. Most reviewers even CZcamsrs these days don't seem like they enjoy video games and only play them for that sake of reviewing them.
The reason why so many people are so passionate about hating this game is because it was INSANELY hyped up, more so than the other games you mentioned.
Thank you for this review. I was really excited about this game but the demo and recent reviews had me questioning if the game was worth a playthrough. This definetly changed my mind. Knowing that the magic and parkour are pretty solid (even if it takes a while for it to come together) makes me look forward to playing it.
I feel the same as Cowboy. Forspoken doesn't seem to be great but it really seems to me at least, like someting that you can have fun in it. Seem like a fun movement and combat system, and a possibly simply platinum trophy to get. Im not buying it at full price but when the price drops I will for sure pick it up to try it out for myself. So many people are really just hopping on the hate wave just as they do the hype wave of other video games. I'm of the perspective that I dont need every game to be some master peice, I just care if it is fun. I would obviously prefer a master peice, and those are the games I would gladly pay full price for. But I honestly don't understand the extreme hate and over criticsim of this game. If you KNOW this is something that you're not going to like, why bother continuing to watch videos on it. Its a waste of your time that could be spent on doing someting that you DO like.
The first 3:30 of this should be mandatory listening before any review of anything
This review reminds me a lot of my experience for Midnight Suns. The story, writing and the dialogue were not great at all, but the game play and the card based battle system and all that got me hooked and that carried me through. Even part way through I just started skipping dialogue at the social system just to get back to the battles. I feel like that will be Forspoken for me, I replayed the demo after spending time away, and I enjoyed the combat a lot as well. Gonna grab it on sale for sure. Good review!
@@MemoryMori exactly! Not all games that get released need to be an 8 or 9 out of 10 to be considered a must play. Some 6’a and 7’s can just be enjoyable in their own right. Just like we need to praise more AA developers for giving us games that are just decent and don’t really need to reinvent the wheel. If you are having a good time with it, then that’s all that should matter.

I agree though. I don't understand one bit how someone can spend so much time online interacting with someone/something they hate. You only get one chance at life, why waste it on stuff you don't like? It truly baffles me.
This review is so refreshing. As someone who has watched about the first 3-4 hours of this game, I'm genuinely baffled by the level of vitriol spiraling around Forspoken. (I feel like inherent bias and the lackluster demo come into play here.)
It has very real flaws, but overall, a 7/10 score is still a fun game to play. Seeing what I have, I dislike the constant banter (providing an option to minimize it on Square's part was a smart move) and would probably be irritated by having to stop playing to watch cutscenes over and over, but the traversal and gameplay look enjoyable with a pretty average story. Also, your commentary on Frey being too cynical is spot-on when the world she's whisked into is a vast improvement from the life she was familiar with.
I love your honesty and mature approach in this review, this is so good to watch.

I really agree with this rant. It sitting on my list under “when on sale.” I don’t understand the extreme level of hatred.
A better baseball analogy for this game would be-imagine absolutely loving baseball, and looking forward to the biggest, most hyped-up baseball match of the entire series. So hyped that they charge almost twice as much as normal to get into see the game. Then, when inside, you're instead subjected to one of the most poorly played games of baseball that you've seen in the last decade. That is the Forspoken experience for many people.

I mean she had a rough life of course she'll be abrasive and downright rude, Frey does grow as the story develops, similar to every arrogant and abrasive characters out there.
AA parading as a AAA, that’s not something I want to throw down £70 on. Best wait for a sale I think.

Just finished the game on hard. It took me 18hrs for the story line. I really enjoyed it besides its many faults. The fighting system is just really enjoyable and made it worth it in my opinion.
Here before the premier: For the most part when they first announced the game I was partially excited by it being an Isekai game and the movement and abilities looked fun. But after witnessing more gameplay it did become clear it probably wasn't for me. The world looked empty and the story didn't seem all that interesting at all. Once I saw the combo system I checked out from personally playing.

I feel like most people are missing the point, this is not just an average game, it's an average game that is trying to force the 80 euro/dollars price point as standard.
It's not revolutionary, it's not master-fully crafted, it's just a normal game. Enjoyable? Yes. Worth 80 bucks? No.
Price-value isn't there, thus, the negative experience.
Stop buying over-priced average before it beco es the norm.

I am 100% cool with aggressively average games, I kinda love them actually. Evil West was also aggressively average and had huge issues, I LOVED it.
So this very genuine honest review makes me wanna give it a try even more because the combat looks so fun later on. I played the demo so my expectations were tempered prior to launch.

I'm not sure, but I think the reason most people are so upset about this game is because of how it was first introduced way back when the PS5 was first being announced. That whole "what next gen will look like" thing. Then the bad trailers with the bad cringe dialog came out and it just snowballed from there. My best guess anyway.

Totally agree on the opening rant. Those people are embarrassing and the sad part is most of them are grown ass adults. Like wow. How insecure does someone have to be to act like that.
Based on what I've seen so far from the Let's Play, I agree in general with Cowboy's review. The combat and movement of this game looks very smooth and fluid and a lot of fun, and I think the graphics are nice too. I also really enjoy Cuff's dialog; to me I find him very funny and amusing. Frey (the protagonist), however, I just really don't like her character. I keep feeling watching the Let's Play like she's just really annoying, like someone I wouldn't want to be or hang around, but I think Cowboy put it very well, how it feels like she just forces swear words in too often and she's just so cynical about things all time. She also seems at times like she's intentionally trying to be obtuse, like she expects everyone to understand her, her language, phrases, behavior, etc, but she just visibly gets annoyed by their behavior and customs.
Overall, it looks to me like the good outweighs the bad, so I'd be interested in playing it, but I can't see myself paying full price for it.
I have a feeling a lot of the hate comes from the protagonist being a black woman.

I’ve been watching Hella reviews about this game and people have just been saying the same thing as if they haven’t really actually played it and didn’t have their own ideas about it, but finally when I watched your review, you had all the same thoughts and ideas I had about the game it’s not a great game, but it doesn’t suck like everybody’s trying to say it does. The combat is what drives this game and makes it enjoyable for me💯
Once a game starts getting hate when it first gets announced then it doesn't have a chance of being successful because the hate spreads like a feral virus on the internet which is really sad.

Pets are family. In Frey's case, it's the only actual family she had.
I haven't seen the whole game yet, but to me, Frey didn't come across as unlikeable at all. Cynical, yes, but that's to some degree understandable given her past life. You don't switch that off like a light switch.
Other than that, great review. I have a feeling I know why some people are so aggressive spreading hate about this game, but there's no need to go into that. In any case, it's clear that not every game can be a 10/10 or 9/10, and there's always going to be games out there who didn't reach their potential. But just because a game isn't what people hoped doesn't mean it's an abject disaster.
Spot on Review mate, I loved the game play also which was the core reason it had me enjoy the game as much, it did have many minor faults but ultimately more positive than negative keep up the good work and all the best to ya !
This game kind of found itself in the middle of a weird intersection of being really mediocre, having strange marketing, and off the back of lots of mediocre SE releases, SE studio sales, and just baffling SE strategy decisions in recent years. If it wasn't an SE game I don't think it would get anywhere as much heat. Also $70.

she even talks about how much she wants to get isekaied, then hates it when she is. I almost feel like it shouldn't have been an isekai. It feels like the story about an almost supernaturally athletic girl trying to put her life back together in new york should've been a seperate game from the fantasy romp

I appreciate the opening rant and that mirrors my opinion. Sometimes I think people hate on stuff because it is marketed, and because hate means clicks. It also opens up extreme, colorful language. Extreme language is easy, but an average tone requires more nuance. Aggressively average feels like a fair, experienced review.
It's definitely not the worst but on the other hand it's literally a copy paste, from they sky who looks like an umbrella during nighttime, to the hollow world in which apart from the absence of literally everything that supposed to be there to fill the void, on top of that you also see that every building and wall is the same. There's no love neither the slightest amount of care in this game, and I'm really sorry but I'm more disappointed than those who created forspoken because the fact that they basically don't give a damn is the least sad and infuriating. I'd love to see it getting better though and that's why I'm going hard on them.
honestly I didn't mind the cussing. as someone who cuss a lot, I would've cussed at the moments she had. her being cynical, with her background it's hard for anyone to be hard to open to new people and get rid of your shell. about her wanting to go back home, Cuff constantly asked as the story progressed why she wanted to go back so bad. you see her open up to her emotions the longer she's in this world and it shows she cares about these people but don't want to admit it. everytime she tried to open up back home, bad things open so she wants to protect her heart
i tried watching your let's play, but i got bored just from looking at the cut scenes, couldn't even finish part1.
The game is amazing. I hate the cursing because my daughter would love this game. By the way....this is part of my theory that SONY took lost soul aside and stripped it to make about 4 different games. This is one of them.

Most of your complaints could be answered easily: they had a sequel or multiple sequels in mind. This was supposed to become another big ip for square enix like final fantasy. They probably have more diverse regions of athia, continuation of the story after frey decides to live in athia so all the skills can be used more in sequel, that was their plan. But unfortunately because of the hate mob that you addressed in the video, the studio itself shut down. So I don't see any sequel happening.

I'm baffled to the hate this game generates as well, agree with the take it's an AA game pretending to be a AAA game. I'll keep watching the LP since the combat looks fun and you're having fun with it. If nothing else this magic system should be refined/ copied by another developer or even this studio if Square doesn't terminate them.

I feel like they didn’t really care about this game as much as they would have if a person of color wasn’t the main character because just look at final fantasy 16 and 15 there asian and they really took there time on how great they look compared to Forspoken and it disappointing Forspoken was a game I was waiting for for a really long time to… I don’t no if that was part of why the game doesn’t look or plays as it should but I just wish they really took more time on the game if they do a update on the game hopefully they can fix some of they bugs if they make a second Forspoken game I hope they take there time on it and fix all the bugs

I think it's a fun game, nice graphics, interesting gameplay, fast action and a wide variety of spells. The conversation of the main character and others is no worse than that of many other games, such as dragon dogma, dragon age, assassins creed, etc. Sometimes better, the development of the main character and how she views the world and herself is fine. But hey, I'm a 70 year old gamer who has been playing games for 42 years and still enjoys them.

Some people just aren't happy unless they're shitting all over everything. It reminds me of the pussies/dicks/assholes speech from Team America World Police. Did I enjoy it enough to go back and platinum it? SURE DID! All the people review bombing this really got me mad too like, I just didn’t get it! The negativity isn’t just about this game, it’s people who saw the warning signs and were hesitant to preorder because we’ve all learned our lesson. I would play this game, but not for $70, maybe for $40. It’s not that the game looks THAT bad, but I think it is an “I knew it” moment and people want to express their frustration

I played about 6 hours of the game so far...agree about the overuse of profanity. It's so frequent that it breaks immersion as you wonder who wrote this dialog.
