What's more crazy is that Bob Carpenter who called it for the Nationals used to call Cardinals games since he's from St Louis. He called McGwire's homers all through 1998. That "See. You. Later." was a common phrase heard all over St Louis in the late-90's when he was launching them.

sorry. paid umpire here. you can still be called out on a homerun. you can also not score on a homerun if you dont finish running the bases(also technically an out), the runs will not count if you dont properly touch the bases in order. once the ball was a dead ball they could no longer resume the play. however due to the new additon of official replays they had a deadball situation that needed to be fixed with a completely predictable outcome, while still adhereing to the rules. so what really happened was the original pitch was struck from the records and the fake pitch and swing was the actual at bat which was recorded in the scorecard. therefore a HR without a bat or ball
