    There was a time when Mtv was the end-all-be-all of music news and influence, and there was a time when Mtv didn't play any rap or r&b, or anything considered "urban" ... Bowie was one of the only artists (and probably the first) who would go on random Mtv interviews and call them out for not playing that spectrum of music - long before "hip-hop" went mainstream - because Bowie was a huge fan of it all =)

    Right is the song on the B-side of the single, a great tune as well. This is from his Young Americans album, recorded at Sigma Sound Studio & he called it "plastic soul." Never did another quite like it. Right, Win & my fave Fascination are great funky songs that most people don't know about cuz they were not on the radio. Fascination was so-written by a young Luther Vandross, who was one of the back-up singers as well. John Lennon also co-wrote Fame with him (with riff by the talented Carlos Alomar). Bowie was the first white performer to appear on Soul Train when this came out. Sorry, I will stop talking now, I just always hope people will give some of his other songs a chance, I don't always agree that his "hits" are necessarily his best stuff. (life-long fan, can you tell?)

    • @chrismeadows4216
      @chrismeadows4216 Před 3 lety +2

      For anyone reading this who hasn't heard it, the demo for Fascination was Luther's song Funky Music. It's a certified classic. Also check out the Young Americans bonus tracks It's Gonna Be Me, Who Can I Be Now?, and John, I'm Only Dancing (Again).
      Young Americans is imo one of the top Bowie albums, and I'm mostly a rock fan.

    Then again, Bowie was invited to perform on the Soul Train, so I think we can all agree that he had soul.
    Also, you might want to check out this interview MTV made back in 1983 where Bowie suddently makes things .. awkward by questioning the (lack of) diversity on MTV.

      The important thing to know in regards to this is, if you like one song on a specific album, you'll probably like most of the non-singles even more. You may not cross over into another album, but that album will be like sweet oxygen if you give it the chance it deserves.
