  • Waves along Lake Superior's frozen northern coast can be just as good as any found in the ocean. Just don't expect surfing them to be easy.

    I love live in Duluth MN and Stoney Point is 20 mins from my house. The break is fun, even in Summer when we get a good storm that blows in swell. Thanks for checking out our spot!

      " Thanks for checking out our spot"..don't hear that often if ever.. but obviously these places take care of themselves. Great vibe and people in cold places take care of each other. The post-surf pub and fireplace scene must be awesome !

      Same here! I'm 15 minutes away from Stoney. Whenever I'm driving up to check out the swells or see what's happening I always think how amazing it is to have the opportunity to do stuff like this. You can be in farm fields one hour and surfing the next. I love it 🤘

    Water temperature on the Texas coast right now is 87 degrees (7/27/2020) - surfing waves from Hurricane Hanna. I really admire these guys for surfing in the dead of winter on Lake Superior, but at 61 years old I'm more of a warm water surfer - I'll leave the harsh weather surfing to the young guys! Great Video - I've watched it more than a few times.

    • @ahbwisurfnpaddle
      @ahbwisurfnpaddle Před 8 lety +17

      ...it feels like being constricted, confined, squeezed and de sensitized. Makes feeling the board below your feet quite difficult thru eight mil booties and seven mil mitts.... When your face gets a simple flush by a winter lip, you get an instant, intense ice cream headache that impedes your vision. When you take a heavy wipe out here at SToNeY, you go deeper in the less buoyant fresh water than in the salt water. Some hit the bottom. Stong outflow currents,...so, Avoid the caves down there, don't wanna get stuck forever. And when your entire suit gets flushed thru your wetsuit face hole during a wipe out, your whole body goes numb a bit right away....nearly blacking out....you know, you Have to keep swimming to retain enough heat to survive. You realize why so many people have drown so quicly here in these waters, fresh kills faster than salt water......Six foot waves come every six seconds here, in sets of ten or more. Several minutes of hold down time potential. Eight foot waves come every eight seconds,....Ten foot waves every ten seconds here. ...... I've surfed overheads in Hawaii, and double overs in SoCal,....but,....SToNeY PoiNT is for sure the most challenging fun, most unique pristeen, cleanest shaped, icy coldest, most intense, drinkable, bucket list wave experience there is.......thankyou for asking clarkewi

      Very much different indeed. After a wipe out here, we don't float back up to the surface, like in saltwater,...even with six mil rubber we have to swim back up. I think that it is a myth. I surf alot in both the ocean and Lake Michigan and I can't tell the difference. I use the same surfboards, alot of people don't think about the extra weight from a wetsuit. You weigh more just because of the wetsuit and should use a slightly thicker board because of that.

    • @ahbwisurfnpaddle
      @ahbwisurfnpaddle Před 7 lety +2

      ...the difference between salt and fresh water ?, yeah, fresh water is quite a bit less buoyant. A longer or floatier board is often the choice....but fresh water is extremely more dangerous that salt, chemically speaking, ...Salt water drowning victims sometime can be rescued and revived after being under for maybe up to ten minutes...but fresh water bursts blood vessels in the lungs upon contact (saltwater does not)...fresh water drowns victims in two minutes or less. Every time.........be care full surfing fresh water.......e....

    How were the waves so big. I went to the gulf and the waves were doodoo

    • @ahbwisurfnpaddle
      @ahbwisurfnpaddle Před 4 lety +1

      So, the waves get 'huge' (for a lake) because of a few interesting variables. W/ 300 miles of fetch distance on Superior, and the storms moving from the sw toward the ne,...counter clock wise spinning low pressure winds above 25knts. , and twenty degrees of temperature drop, makes those wave impulses, that take about 15- 20 hours of travel time to come down from the top of the lake. AND,...all along minnesota's north shore of the big lake, are steep rocky cliffs that refract, rebuild, and reshape the waves as they travel down. The waves come out of really deep water, and hit the rock 'stair step' reef at Stoney Point. It can be flat looking everywhere else on this end of the lake, and with the right conditions, there can be ten foot waves at stoney at the same time. Lake Superior, an ancient sunken volcano, is indeed, Nature's finest "wave pool".....e.

    Looks fun but I bet the ice cream headaches and ice cold water down the back made it questionable if worth it.

      a little more thickness help with paddling, a little more length gets you into the wave earlier too here. Fresh water is not so floaty as the salty stuff is......e..

      It's Stony Point, but the protected Bay. It's called Boulders. It gets the wrap around storm waves, and the point acts as a wind break. It can really crank, and rarely a SW swell can hit it straight away. That only happens once every couple of years.
      Primarily it's wrap around Nor'easter storm waves.

    I know this seems really stupid but why do people say it is hard to surf in those lakes?

    • @ahbwisurfnpaddle
      @ahbwisurfnpaddle Před 4 lety

      Not a stupid question at all. Surfing in the fresh water is more difficult for a couple reasons. The fresh water is less 'floaty' than the salt water, so we often ride a bigger board here, to compensate for the little tougher paddling. AND,...most important, is that unlike saltwater, that can be pumped out of someone's lungs if they 'near drown, maybe six to eight to ten minutes later...and that person may survive,.....Fresh water, upon entering the lungs, immediately begins to burst blood vessels in the lungs, and drowning occurs within two minutes. The little talked about secret, of the danger in the Great Lakes, and Lake Superior surf spots.......e...

      we wear 6/5 hoodies with eight mil booties, seven mill mitts....sometimes a vest or a springer over all that. This was a "warm" winter day,...just below freezing. It's the below zero days that get tougher.
