- Grant Shapps will hail a "golden age for British shipbuilding" in a speech at the Sea Power Conference in central London today as the Conservatives continue their push to talk about defence.
The defence secretary will announce that "up to" six new warships to support the Royal Marines will be commissioned.

We are Going on a Massive Ship building Program. First we have to Retire Everything we have In the Current Fleet to Pay for it 😂😂😂
These 28 ships / boats are only replacing things that have retired or will be retiring. Whether they are Astute and Dreadnoughts subs; Type 26 and Type 31 frigates; Amphibious ships etc. The only "gain" is 6 Amphibious related ships replacing (in the 2030s) 5.

Admiral of the Fleet the Viscount Shapps strikes again. 'We are enlarging our fleet by scrapping two more Type 23s.'
They are about to pull the 200 million loan for upgrading facilities at Harland and Wolff and give the contract for 2 new Royal Navy ships to a Spanish shipbuilder.
We are Britain, our euro allies can do the ground fighting but we need a massive navy, that's our role
Lets wait and see if they come good.
I hope they do as it will be fantastic for our country and our armed forces🇬🇧🇬🇧
The current T45s and currently building T26s and T31s are perfectly adequate, or would be if they ever receive their full intended weapons fits instead of our Whitehall and Westminster vermin leaving them half armed i.a.w. their standard FFBNW lie. Above all, the ships require full appropriate strike length VLS installations suitable for each class. Meanwhile, ALL the remaining T23s need a minimum viable fit of 8 x deck canister launched NSMs in addition to the already installed CAMM Sea Ceptor AAW fit.
Agreed, the Type 45 should recieve 16 strike length sylver or Mk 41 cells with tomahawk or MdCN as an interim, FC/ASW in the future. 8 cells can be used to quadpack camm for 32 instead of 24 in the mushroom farm. 8 harpoons is the equivalent of 20 nsms in terms of topweight, so if their is space on the deck, 16 is a good number of NSMS (iver huitfeldt, Type 31 predecessor had 16 harpoons, 24 essms and 32 sm-2) Helps that is land attack capable too. Hopefully even if FC/ASW results in two different missiles, both are dual purpose, will help with the limited number of MK 41 cells on 26 and 31. More Mk 41 cells on Type 26 would be great for Asroc (or hopefully something more capable)

Selling these will help fill up the much needed help on the shortages of the other ships of staff issues we have at the moment but that’s the only plus!
This has been kept under wraps and if public knew the real reason there would be uproar because it leaves our fleet and especially our flagships without refuelling and other resources being able to be transferred from ship to ship meaning more stop offs or relying on other countries to fill the gaps. This isn’t what the government portrayed when we unveiled the 2 new flag ships at all.
So whern there be more fully equipped escorts and and submarines and escorts .will be good to fully equippet the present fleet. In reality no increase in size of the navy

In terms of technology, yes I'd say we have the upper hand over Russian subs. However, in terms of numbers, Russia has that edge.

Based on our aircraft carriers performance I’d be more concerned about us building ships with water sailing capability.
Shapps also needs to get a grip of his mouth after directly contradicting his handlers in the US on China providing “lethal aid” to Russia too rather than playing the “tough guy”.
Not that we’ll need to think about him again in 6 weeks.

The last Minister of Defence (not Defense in the UK) was Peter Thorneycroft in 1964. The current Secretary of State for Defence is Grant Shapps. Just before he took office Ben Wallace held the post.

So basically moth ball some of the older ships like Bulwark, Albion and a couple of Type 23 frigates, the only half decent ships the UK has got, obviously after being stripped of parts. But include them in the figures. We have both carriers seemingly out of use and basically the Type 45 destroyers are pretty useless. The new frigates will more then likely be riddled with issues as well. Our Navy is an embarrassment.
No, it's not. Both your carriers are in use. Modern ships are very complex -- remember that it took the USN ten YEARS to commission USS Gerald Ford.
@@wordsmith101 The Royal Navy ships are becoming more unreliable, less used due to cost issues, lacking in confidence by the UK public of its abilities. As for the carriers they are becoming a national embarrassment. We don't have enough of the F35s to make deploying them worth it. If they had gone for the Cat and traps it would have open the opportunity to look at different fixed wing aircraft to be used on them. This is typical ministry interference that has resulted in 2 monstrous failures

US economic & foreign policy has been undermining Europes industrial capacity & independence for decades to make the continent dependent on them & has only accelerated since the push to move Europe away from Russian energy. Almost every “decision” now made in the UK from going to war to interest rate changes or major government policy are made in Washington & then just enacted here.
The last time there was a golden age of British ship building there was a global imperialist attitude which led to slavery, disease spread across the globe to different civilisations. But that’s okay because back then we said it was all for freedom and prosperity, a bit like what we are doing now. Bravo British Royal Navy. Let’s double down!

Britain still produces its own steel and is in the process of upgrading one of its main steel manufacturing plants in Port Talbot to make it greener with over £1 billion being invested. The site in question makes steel for everything from tin cans to cars.

When are we going to see the return of massive merchant ship building to Britain? We see all these huge modern multi billion pound cruise liners everywhere yet not one has been built in Britain!
