I come from New England and we lost many varieties. Wonderful work you are doing. I have such found memories of apple picking in New Hampshire growing up.
There were thousands of varieties. Communities across the country all had their preferred apples. Cider apples were a big thing as well as those that lasted well into the winter and those for drying. Fortunately there is a resurgence in demand for those that have survived yet aren't necessarily commerically viable.
I hope that he has found a Fallawater apple tree. I remember it from when my great grandfather had one in Roan Mountain TN. It was the best apple I've ever had in my life and I haven't tasted one again since I was 2 years old. I can still remember the taste and the size of them. They were the largest apple I've ever seen.

Debbie, Looks like he found that one and actually sells it: applesearch.org/buy.html
This sounds like a great work. Is there a real tree called "stumpapple"?
Ask hunters.
Deer LOVE apple trees. If there's an apple tree on their hunting property they'll know exactly where it is.
Doctors must be terrified of him.
I found a unique species of apple this summer. I got it DNA tested! It’s a lot better than a Granny Smith
