sir Von! what part of songs would you use a sizzly cymbal vs a cymbal with stick definition? would love to hear your thoughts on this.

Jigs thanks for the question and thanks always for watching! For sizzle cymbals, I use them a lot for ballads. I used to use one all the time in my setup for all playing but found it was a bit too much extra sound and I enjoy a tight more stick-defined sound in general.
For Big Band drumming, I think the ride cymbal sizzle sound is awesome. For small groups they can be be too if not over played. Again, for ballads, they're perfect because they give us some added sustain but I try not to over play them.
I'm thinking about getting a lightweight 18" thin crash with 2 rivets in the future. Just to use as an effect for particular spots in the music like on ballads. I hope all that helps.
If you ever need a hand with your Jazz drumming, I'd love to help you out at Jazz Drum School: jazzdrumschool.com/ Keep swinging my friend🤙

I'm currently playing with a 22" turk jazz ride (istanbul) and a 20" dry ride (sabian).
Recently, I often find myself thinking which ride to "ride" in the middle of a song haha. Your response helped clear the confusion. I'll definitely keep it in mind.
Thanks sir Von. Always a pleasure to watch and learn from your playing! 💯

Thanks Jigs and it's always a pleasure to help you! One other thing. I often change my ride cymbal to follow the song form. For example, I'll play on one cymbal that sounds good with the harmony on the A's and change to the other cymbal for the B section.
It's not a rule but it just helps mark the song form and flow with the color of the chords. I hope to see you at Jazz Drum School too soon my friend: jazzdrumschool.com/
I'd love to help you out more to reach your drumming goals. Have a swinging great day 🤙
