Dear, Dear Kate, I am in tears (and that is a good thing and doesn't happen vey often). I, too, am spiffing up a tiny lttle area that used to be a dog run on the back side of our little ranch house. Modest investment of some 16 x16" pavers on the outer rim to make it a wee bit bigger, and some paint for a tired little bench my brother made for me. I was feeling a little embarrassed about the result but now I am holding onto "Do the best you can do." I'm handicapped. I can't do heavy lifting like I used to. This is enough. Bless you my dear. Bless your dear Dad.

Anne, I am over here cheering you on! You have painted a bench, added some pavers (which are NOT light) and have made your corner of the world more beautiful and connected. That is no small feat. You have done something beautiful today and I’m proud of you. Thank you for being with me and my dad in spirit. ☺️

Thank you Kate for reminding me to sit down and appreciate what I have accomplished so far. We are ripping out wild elderberries, wild roses, wild raspberries out of a long untended garden we inherited from previous owners. I just decided to focus on how far we have come not on what is left to do.
P.S. Have you considered painting the concrete under the window to match your siding. You wouldn’t even notice the irritation hoses then.

This is one of the best gardening videos ever! Thank you for acknowledging what so many of us struggle with…waiting for perfection instead of embracing what is….”this my best right now”. In addition to sharing your wisdom you are such a great teacher of design. Expressing your thought process as you are designing is so helpful to me. Thank you for taking the time to enrich the gardening world.🌸😀

This is the first video I have watched of your by yourself. I have watched you with Janey. Thank you so much for being down to earth. And remembering every one does not have sponsors and thousands of dollars to burn on gardens . I have pretty nice gardens but have been working on them for 20 years. And I am proud of them. Family and friends come to see my flowers every year. The person who made your patio was probably so proud of it and I am glad you realized it! Again Thank you I am sure you are going to make it gorgeous again and just think if the person who did it first is watching!!!!😊

When you started talking about the patio and the Adirondack chair being the best you can do, made me tear up. Thank you for saying that. I often feel the pressure to go big and grand when I watch some other gardening CZcamsrs. Your video made me realize that I should be proud of what I have accomplished so far in the garden...even the patio paver that I put in last year that isn't perfectly level. I did it all by myself and I am proud of that and I love it! 🥹🥰

14:24 I haven’t even finished watching this video, and I was so moved I had to come and comment before continuing on. First, I was nodding and thinking I can totally relate in regard to powerful thoughts moving through when doing tasks, such as pressure washing, that don’t require a whole lot of thought to do. I was so touched when you honored the person that created the patio in the first place. A lightbulb when on when I thought how, as a recovering perfectionist, I find so much more peace and progress in creating within my abilities and limitations, learning from failures and surprise wins, and growing joy and gratitude in the process that I ever got from striving for perfection. I thought about how I can only hope that others can sense the heart and soul I put into my humble garden and see it as an extension of myself. I was so moved when you shared your powerful message of waking up with gratitude and doing the best you can do today and being ok with it. Apparently my soul needed this affirmation because tears welled up in my eyes and my heart swelled. Thank you so much for sharing. 💞 Now, on to watching the rest of the video. ☺️

You have some wise words regarding making a space that someone else created into something really special. And as usual, your videos hits home as if you knew what was going on in my mind. I just spoke with a friend who just purchased a home for herself and her dog. She told me how she never uses her back yard as it is just an empty square with no privacy. I am stopping by tomorrow to help her envision how it can become her private sanctuary. And I will forward this video to her. It couldn’t come at a more perfect time❤. Thank you.

This is such a great video. I think you can tell from the comments that you are touching hearts. I went through a divorce and had to sell my dream home last year. It was really a once in a lifetime home in all ways-gardens, pond, orchard, chickens, horses. I’m starting over in a builder home with a small yard and not a lot of money. I bought some decomposed granite, made myself a little patio, bought some furniture and at first all I could think about was what I had lost, what used to be. But today I sat out there and enjoyed it, realized how beautiful it was and I did it myself. A neighbor said they loved it because it looked like a little beach. It’s the best I can do now and I’m grateful.

    You are my Soul Sister!
You had me 😢😢😢 as soon as you said you were in deep thought while pressure washing, 😂😂😂😂
    I do the same,
I start washing my concrete jungle, or while tending to my little garden or while doing some painting touch ups & my brain goes all sentimental.
I think about the past owner of my home, and how excited they must have been when they built or bought this house.
I think of my Mom and how she would of loved to have what I have today, but I’m grateful that she gets to see what her sacrifices have done for me and that I still have her with me and get to share blessings with her!
I’m so happy that you shared this today, I thought I was way too tender-hearted, and needed to be put on meditation lol!
Thank You for making me feel normal with my/our thought process.
And yes it’s okay to have a plastic garden chairs!
I took some old teal colored ones and sprayed paint them Gray and threw some adorable pillows from Home Goods on them and they are looking Fab!
and I couldn’t afford to replace my fence so I threw some black paint on them and now they look amazing! “I don’t need a new fence No More” 😘
    And regarding Garden size,
my garden it may not be big & fancy, but it the most beautiful little cottage garden ever. So many people walk by my house and tell me they loved what I did and how beautiful my little garden looks, 2 people told me it looks so “Zen” GIRL!!!
I live NYC! “ZEN” is the biggest compliment anyone could ever give me!
fyi: most of my plants I grew from seeds using the winter sowing method! “Milk Jugs” 😘
Plants are gorgeous, but they is no prouder feeling in your Garden when the most beautiful plants are the plants you grew yourself from seed!
Again thank you for sharing your thoughts and to everyone reading this YES!!!!
Yours Best is Good Enough!!!! XOXOXO

For a split second I hesitated recording these thoughts. But then I thought of the person that needed to hear an encouraging word. And I thought how by allowing me to speak my truth (that this is more than just a pretty patio) that it opens the door for others to speak their truth. Please say “hello” to your NYC Zen Garden. THAT is an incredible compliment and reflection of the gardener you are. Bravo, friend. 💞

Thank you for sharing so much. This was very meaningful to me on many levels. Two years ago, I grew Baby Blue Eucalyptus from seed. The first winter I brought it inside and it lost every leaf and made a big mess. Last year, as it was getting cold, I threw it onto our unheated garage by an east facing window. It woke up outside in April and has so much growth and is over 4 foot tall now and thriving in a large pot. I also love the Tattoo vinca series and grow them from seed under lights. Money is really tight for us right now so I’m not feeling like I can go buy new plants or a new trellis that I have in my vision, BUT I can take time to take joy in what I DO have. My garden is producing vegetables that I’m able to eat and also share. My flowers are blooming and make me happy to see but also bring color to the garden and I’m picking small bouquets to take to the office to bring joy there.
I am physically able to go pick apricots from neighbors loaded trees and share with many including four boxes this morning that I dropped to the food pantry.
I have a yard many would love to have and I need to give myself grace and say to myself that I’m going the best I can.

I have a multitude of gratitude for your sweet words. Often in life it is the not so pretty things that need a little lovin to begin to emerge into the butterfly they were meant to be. We live in the woods in 5b in a red New England saltbox with a stone wall with a primitive gate. At 82 I still dream and create. I have also learned to repurpose and rearrange shopping right in my own barn. At the end of the day I say thanks for the opportunity to spend time speaking to mother nature and listening to her ideas. You and your channel are a blessing.

Girl, you just made me cry so much. Sometimes that is the best we can do and that’s okay and that’s enough. Improvements are never linear; whether in life or gardening. The weeds come. And even if we can’t take care of them today, maybe we’ll get them later or even appreciate them for the life that they bring in the meantime, even in adverse conditions.

Hi Kate 😊 Thank you, thank you, thank you 🙏 I got very emotional at the beginning with your words of encouragement 🥺 My hubby just turned 77, and I am 64 with many health issues that have rendered me handicap. So everything is my ideas and finger pointing, (except I do the potted plants and some watering. Everything is hand watered.) We moved here a little over 1 1/2 years ago (we lived in our little old house 25 yrs. Which had a much larger yard) Against hubby's wishes, 😁 We potted up many of my favorite plants and brought them along. Last spring we had to create beds to put most in. Right now there is no "depth" just little (and large) soldiers with a center circle for my Crepe Myrtle Shrub in the W. back yard. In the front East facing, but, open from South to North, there was an existing Palm and 2 Red Yuccas. We created a bed there against the house, and planted my 2 small Black Diamond Crepe Myrtles (purely purple from old house) each in small round beds out by sidewalk and street. Oh btw I live in zone 9b Texas Gulf Coast, which is VERY humid and hot. 🥵 In the yucca bed we added 5 Red Hot Pokers , and some Dusty Millers. ( on the south side is our MASSIVE 6+ concrete driveway, which puts off so so much heat) On the North side (5ft. Chain link fence with black wind cloth/privacy) back door, is my existing potted plants lined up down the fence Where we sit under a small canopy. Side yard is just 7ft wide. We live on SS soo affording small perennials right now is out of the question. I got soo frustrated because I had hoped this year we could add more depth and texture/color. I got depressed at the situation and wanted to give up, which hubs said no. Weeding is so hard on him, and he wants things in the ground and for me potted is the easiest. So you have helped me to appreciate what we have and where we are at for now, and I cant tell you how you've helped me with your kind encouraging words. 💜🙏💜 Now that you know my life story lol sorry for this long post.. 😕 ANYWAYS... Your zen intimate garden turned out wonderfully. I did notice that you don't tease the roots b4 planting and you kind of "shoved" (unsure if thats the correct the word) plants into potting holes (🤔?) I always heard tease roots when they are pot bound. (?) Any new suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I loved this longer video. And thank you again for sharing along with all your kind words of encouragement. I am so thankful that I found you. Always, Jen 😍

I do sit outside the front door ( 4ft. Patio overhang, on the massive concrete drive 🥵 ) I would love to have more than my planter with Sunpatiens by the front door but, the heat and alot of sun and reflective heat. Thought when able to afford, getting 2 tall topiaries, and hanging some potted flowers like Vinca or Petunias. Don't know what else to do (?) 🤷‍♀️ I wish I could afford a consultation with you. That would be so awesome. 😊

Those containers. You knocked it out of the park, again, Kate.
I picked up a couple of those 'Onyx & Pearls' penstemon this year. I went to deadhead them (I've heard they can self-seed prolifically) and was pleasantly surprised to see one was covered in buds.
It's weed season so that has interfered with finishing my containers. Poor plant stash is withering away.
