Last year in New Haven, Connecticut, at a local yard sale, a gentleman spot a small floral bowl. It is a blue-and-white artifact, which features motifs of lotus, peony, chrysanthemum and pomegranate blossoms. He must have recognized this is not a normal chinaware because he did not haggle over the $35 asking price. Shortly after making the purchase, he sent photographs of the bowl to auction specialists, who identified it as an item of historical significance. Upon closer inspection, the artifact was found to have originated from the court of the Yongle Emperor, who ruled from 1403 to 1424 -- a period noted for its distinctive and celebrated porcelain techniques. Known as a "lotus bowl," due to its resemblance to a lotus bud, the item is now valued between $300,000 and $500,000, with the top estimate nearly 14,300 times the amount it was purchased for.

I expect that the discovery of the Yongle bowl will now inspire forgers to place excellent copies in yard sales to have them "discovered," which is a convenient way to circumvent the question of provenance.

@@diggingtochina "Liked." Taking a shot in the dark over here. Disregard if this doesn't interest you. Hand to God not a troll. You seem very knowledgeable. My family has lots of porcelain and can confidently say I have 3 vases/jars what I believe to be from the ming dynasty. Perhaps "Wan Lee scroll mark jar. (Blue and White) unfortunately this inquirie came after 1 of them got a small crack. With that said I have an excellent eye. While nothing is certain in life If I was a betting man. Would put money down that it's real. Just from a look at it. Felt more certain after researching. Anyways thank you for taking the time to read this. If interested would be great to find dig deeper can send you photos we can talk more maybe?

That's so sad. They're as good as the old masters, they should just sell that as new and make good profit either way.
    God bless.

The auctioneers' name is pronounced "Su-ther-bees". With prices like those, I think I'll pass on collecting fine Chinese ceramics.

Do you have an email? I can possibly ask you questions on two pieces I inherited.
