The Road to Calvary Installation York Art Gallery

You may have spotted a recent change to our staircase! We're thrilled to welcome back 'The Road to Calvary', a 16th century oil painting that has been on loan for the last 20 years and has recently been conserved.
This painting, which depicts Christ's journey to his Crucifixion, is part of a Netherlandish pictorial tradition whereby the carrying of the cross is portrayed as a many-figured procession leading from Jerusalem to the hill of Calvary. Christ can be seen to the right, borne down by the weight of the cross, as one of his tormentors prepares to strike him. The lower half of the picture is packed with jostling groups of spectators, who vie for the viewer's attention, while a cityscape can be made out on the horizon.
