  • We take a look at how long you should be aiming for when writing your book. Excuse me for my stumbling tongue today by the way, I filmed this while very tired :P

    I'm currently writing a novel of interconnected surrealist and magical realism stories that's around 300K words (or just above 700+ pages). Just at 64000 words so far after two months. Still have a long way to go, whew. Thanks for all the quality content, mate! All the best from the Philippines!

    I am writing a book that can be considered horror, but it is also a drama/romance/tragedy with subplots. I think mine would be around 600 pages. I love horror but I find that books that are just horror drag on.

      That's brilliant! I agree that Horror books don't have to be just Horror. The same goes with any genre

    As a reader, I'm finding that the older I get, the longer I am preferring my books to be. (About 500+ pages.) Part of it is financial. My finances are very limited right now. And books are SO expensive! If I'm going to spend $16 for a paperback, it had better be worth my while, length-wise! And I just love to "live" in a story for a long time anyway.
    But that's assuming the length of the book is functioning to move things forward. There's nothing worse than having to slog through hundreds of pages where not much is happening, even though you're enjoying the story and want to see how it ends. (Brandon Sanderson, I'm looking at YOU!)

      Hahaha, yes I know right! The Mistborn books have such beautiful covers but they are absolute bricks. You're right though, the trouble with a lot of long books is too much fluff and not enough motion. Sadly it's just one of those things that you can't give someone a definite answer on because there are so many variables.

    Awesome tips :D I've wondered both of the things you covered in here often when working on my book (I'm probably never going to finish the thing though)

      Thanks! :) Glad to be of any help at all. You should finish it! I always told myself I wouldn't, but once I did it was such an immense weight off my shoulders.

      :) I'm currently rewriting a first draft of it and going to start from there... maybe one day I will finish it.

    I'm reading it right now and I had to take a break and read a few books before picking it up. I'm about 300 pages in. I want to finish stardust before I get back into it. I have about 130 pages left in stardust

    Very good videos! When you quote someone and you have to do 5 lines and have a slightly bigger margin on each side of that quote, should the font be the same size or smaller and should there be no space between the person's name you are quote or should there be something like 6 points or 12 points? I realize this might not be your area of expertise. Thanks.

    Hi! I'm currently writing a YA detective action novel, however my first chapter is only 1420 words, is this too small?

    • @CamWolfeAuthor
      @CamWolfeAuthor  Před 6 lety

      That is generally considered very short for a chapter, but it can depend on what happens 😊 As long as the pacing isn't too fast

    For the sake of argument, and to pose my question without intending to sound arrogant, let's assume the material within the book is of great standard :P. My question is, what happens when a word count is 155K spread among 6 distinct mystery+suspense+thriller stories? Is this feasible for presenting to an agent for querying without splitting the book into novellas? Pls assume the content to be gripping and of a must finish/read before putting down (this seemingly arrogant assumption is intended for me to be able to pose the question, and i apologize for it :)). Thnx in advance for any opinion offered :).

      Why not. Stephen King has been doing that for years. That's literally exactly what 'Four Past Midnight', 'Different Seasons', 'Needful Things' and 'Full Dark, No Stars' are... books of 4+ novellas collected together.

    It should be as long as it needs to be.

  • @Piqipeg
    @Piqipeg Před 4 lety

    The best and worst answer to this question is "as long as it needs to be". Great advice for already experienced authors (who already knows how to accomplish it), but pretty bad advice to newer writers.

  • @TornadoCreator

    You claim for fantasy 100,000-150,000 words... I think Brandon Sanderson, George RR Martin, Patrick Rothfuss, Raymond E. Feist, and Stephen King all resoundingly disagree there. Every single one of them is a bestselling authors in the genre, and all of them are known for writing 300,000 word or bigger tomes. (some even top out at more than 500,000 words). Frankly a 100,000 word book is "small" by my standards.

    Shiiiite... my book has passed 300k pages now, and it's not finished. DX It' be sooo fat. XD And I was intending that to be ONE book btw... the first in a series. Hehe... I'm looking at how to shorten it down now. :'D Yes! Chapters! I find it SO hard to know where to end/start chapters! Thank you so much!
