One of my favorite picture books is Seven Silly Eaters. It is illustrated by Marla Frazee. The story is about a mom trying to feed her seven picky kids. The illustrations are so detailed and chaotic, just like her life. I adore it and I don't even have kids.

My favourite illustrator as a child was Steven Kellogg, I just loved all the detail, and how he wrote a story within a story by his illustrations. And now with my child, we love Oliver Jeffers, come to think of it, for the same reasons. Though he is a writer of his own stories, he uses words and illustrations in tandem to write beautiful stories. Maybe check them out at your local library before you buy them but I'm sure you'd love them ☺️

I need to pick up The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore for my classroom. I do think that my Kindergarteners will enjoy it. It can be tricky finding picture books that are engaging but not too lengthy. This one looks perfect.

A book I absolutely loved as a child was Alice in Wonderland with illustrations by Dusan Kallay, they are so unsettling and have this feel of a psychodelic trip which may explain why I grew up to be a horror fan 😅

Hey Carolyn, nice to see you again. Some very nice illustrations there. Unlike you, rather than color or emotion, I look first to the use of space. In particular, I loved the ones with levitating objects - such as the over-the-head chair and the floating books - present huge panoramas on relatively small pieces of paper. Some try to do that with tricking the eye with perspective of big buildings, but I prefer the small objects making everything else look large.

I love Rackham's art too (and Edmund Dulac - very similar style and era). My favourite illustrated book is by Errol le Cain and is a version of the Twelve Dancing Princesses. Going back to my childhood, some of my favourite books, (now OOP) were Trouble for Trumpets by Peter Cross, The Secret Harbour by Sam Smith, The Church Mouse series by Graham Oakley (fabulously accurate caricature rendering of 70s/80s Britain) and not OOP: The Mousehole Cat, by Antonia Barber, illus. by Nicola Bayley.

  • @NatalyaVins-blueflower775

I love collecting illustrated books. I own Alice in Wonderland illustrated by Rodney Matthews. If you haven’t seen his illustrations yet please check him out. I also love my gorgeous Russian edition of Les Miserables, it has more than 350 illustrations of French artists from the 19th century.

I also have a couple comics: The Dark Knight Returns and Kami Garcia/Gabriel Picolo's box set of their first three Teen Titans comics. I think Gabriel Picolo's art especially is absolutely gorgeous. I love your videos so much, I've already read and loved so many books this year that you've recommended (Neverwhere, A man called Ove, Wind in the Willows, Breasts and Eggs) and bought so many more that I'm looking forward to! My favorite favorite illustrator is Melissa Sweet. She illustrates by mixing her drawings with collages and found objects! She's done quite a few things but my favorite is Balloons Over Broadway, a biography of the creator of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade balloons! I read it to my family every year and highly recommend!

Thank you so much for sharing these with us. I always love seeing your illustration recommendations. I'd definitely like to add a couple of these to my home library. Some illustrated childrens books I really like are: Imagine a Night, written by Sarah L Thomson and illustrated by Rob Gonsalves. There are a whole bunch of others too (eg Imagine a Day, Imagine a World, Imagine a Place etc) that look even more incredible but I haven't physically looked in them yet. I also love the edition of The Secret Garden that is illustrated by Inga Moore.

Book introductions and prefaces can also be part of a fictional story, it seems to me that this is the case in Chris Allsburg's book, for that reason the drawings are similar to his.

    • @candypeleaux5638
      @candypeleaux5638 Před rokem +1

  • @stews9

Carolyn, are we sure Allsburg hasn't written the introduction as a frame for the drawings, to inspire speculation and make the miscellany more interesting? Just a thought. What a lovely video this is, your insights and appreciation deepened by your own expertise in illustration and art. Well done.

Hi Carolyn. I’m just wondering if you have read Testament of Youth by Vera Brittain? She’s an English writer. It’s an amazing book. It’s set before and during the First World War. It’s the story of her life. She comes from a privileged family, she wants to go to university but her mother doesn’t want her to become a ‘blue stocking’. The war takes over her life and the lives of those around her. She catalogues the seismic shifts in society brought about by the war, but in a deeply personal and sometimes profound way. I know you like a good war story 😂. I hope you read it and enjoy it. Walker 😊

A little bit different but I just read a graphic memoir, ephemera, which was one of these most beautiful things I’ve seen. The story is told with almost no words and it is absolutely heartbreaking, it is a basically a woman reflecting on a childhood with an absent mother who suffered mental health problems, but it goes into their connection to nature and plants and gardens and is really stunning. Highly recommend!

Hi Carolyn! I've been watching your (and Emma's) videos since last year. I started from the beginning, so it was a pleasure to see your journey, you're such an amazing artist. I just wanted to tell you how much I love your channel and your lovely, glowing personality. I feel like we're kindred spirits in so many ways. I love illustrated books too, my recommendations are:
    - Lilly and the Sun Keeper and The Snow Sister by Maja Lunde
    - Foxwood Tales Series by Cynthia Paterson (so similar to Beatrix Potter)
    - The Complete Brambley Hedge by Jill Barklem (also Beatrix Potter vibes)
    - anything by Sven Nordquist (especially The Christmas Porridge)
    - The Christmas Pig by J. K. Rowling (I think it would make you cry)
    - Pig Banda and Tiny Dragon by James Norbury
And of course Beatrix Potter, but I know you have her beautiful box set. 😉Oh, and Where Snow Angels Go, I was so happy when you were talking about how much you enjoyed this story.

Carolyne, thank you for another inspiring video. After watching your recommendations I went hunting and came across the 2007 Spanish Children’s Award winning (I don’t know, is it a Novella?) 118 paged Kafka and the Traveling Doll, by Jordi Sierra i Fabra, translated into English by Jacqueline Minett in 2019…. A stunning story (not as many illustrations as the copy you shared, but) beautiful watercolors and the writing drips off the page. I was gripped by the poetic and intelligent style of the prose and was crying my eyes out by the 2nd chapter… I was surprised at how many emotional and thought provoking themes were woven into this longer version of the story. I thought you may want to check it out….Thank you for being a dedicated passionate source of inspiration. Kita
