Most of these kidnaps are due to the cartel thinking that either the person is a rival cartel member or they just think he/she has a lot of money. Its rarely they do background checks. That's why a lot of innocent people are getting killed aswell even children. The moment you are catched you basically have to confince the judge that you didnt do but you're negro in the 1900's. And we know what happend to a lot of Negro's back then they just got sentenced due to there black skin. Thats the same with the Cartel you basically cant confince them and they will sentence you in mosted cases with death.

Los zetas wasent a drug cartel they were mexican ex military special forces (GAFES) they started working as a private military for the cartel de gulfo leader osiel cardenas. When he was arrested they figured they were already doing all the hard work so they took control of the cartel and thus Los Zetas was now a cartel but they didnt know how to traffic drugs. All they knew was how to kill and torture so they started kidnapping people for ransoms. They didnt care. & they did kidnap rich people too, tons of them But there are more poor then rich.

My stepfather was kidnapped once, in the north of Tamaulipas.
My mom was preparing to go to sleep when she noticed that my stepfather changed his Whatsapp profile picture so she jokingly asked him "do you not love me anymore?" (Since he had her picture as a PP).
Not even a minute passed and "he" was calling, thats when my moms entire world fell apart. They were asking for a lot of money, that she didn't had. My sister and i had some money but not enough to pay for stepfather ransom, and my sister was unwilling to give her money since kidnapings end as murders here in Tamaulipas.
My little sister was in tears, since she was stepfather daughter with my mom and heard everything when the kidnappers called (she was sleeping with mom) and believed that she was not going to see her father again.
In the end, my stepfather was able to save himself. He had enough money in his card and gave it to them. 2 days later he was taken blindfolded to a remote location and left there.
He was able to come home the next day, and he knows that maybe next time something like that happens he wont be able to come back since he was "lucky".

I have a home in Mexico and have travelled throughout Mexico with no problems . I have however experienced two armed home invasions in my home in Canada. Two members of my family have been sexually assaulted, one raped and one murdered . We are not involved in criminality and don’t live in bad neighborhoods.
I personally love Mexico and the Mexican people. Yes the cartels pose a risk but so does organized crime and violence from drug addicts and gangs in the US and Canada.
